Pat the Bunny

Some days you just have to go back to the well, to fill up again

Donnie Darko is my well. Jake had done a great performance before in October Sky,- but Darko - well Darko was different, Darko was something that doesn't happen very often. It showed Jake taking a part and making his, completely his. No one can imagine anyone but Jake as Donnie, Donnie is Jake, no one else will ever be thought of Donnie Darko. Jake's gone on to do that with Jack Twist, but Donnie was the first.

So when the circus and din grow too loud, it's back to the well for me.

And it's bunnies today -

Of course Frank is a bunny and in the director's cut there is a mention of Watership Down, which the story of bunnies but have you ever notice that there are more bunnies in the movie? What do bunnies represent? When Donny is sleeping on the couch there is a picture of young Elizabeth (Maggie) holding a bunny. And in the last scene you see Donnie and Elizabeth she is sleeping in a chair, you see a stuffed bunny to the right. Is it innocence? Why does he see symbol of innocence in almost frightening way?

Elizabeth is sleeping Frank, who Donnie see represented as a man bunny, what does that mean?

Rabbits are seen as symbols of fertility and rebirth. They are also symbols of playful sexuality, which also relates to the human perception of innocence. Is this Donnie's way of rationalizing the sexuality of his sister and his own feelings of sex, desires and the struggles of growing up?

One of the most poignant scenes is Donnie in the theater with Gretchen, where he sees Frank.

Donnie: Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?
Frank: Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Is Donnie questioning himself - his "innocence", or that he's trying to be a man and he's not a man yet?

Watership Down is a heroic fantasy. The story begins with Fiver, a young runt rabbit who is a seer, receives a frightening vision of his warren's imminent destruction. How he and his brother Hazel journey to find a safe place. Fiver's visions promise a safe place in which to settle, and the group finds Watership Down, an ideal location to set up their new warren. They are soon reunited with Holly and Bluebell, also from the Sandleford Warren, who reveal that Fiver's vision was true and the entire warren was destroyed by humans. Watership Down is peaceful but the future is uncertain. Is Donnie Fiver?

Are the branches of the tree where Donnie goes the source of Franks ears in Donnie's vision of him?

One of my favorite scenes in any movie ever!

There are so many great scenes in DD, most of which I still haven't figured out. And even though I've probably seen it half a dozen times now, there are still things to be noticed--like his sister clutching the bunny, never noticed that.

And speaking of sex and bunnies, I have a green stuffed bunny that I won a few years back as a prize for an easter egg hunting contest at a friend's house. I of course had to name the bunny Frank. Well, my male cat, shall we say, has taken a real shining to Frank, and has his way with him on a regular basis.

I love Donnie too, and bunnies - great song today, btw.

But when the circus and din grow to loud for me, I go to Brokeback. It was the first thing I ever saw Jake in, and probably will always be my favorite because of that.

PG, I love deer too - how awful for you to have hit one. Luckily, I haven't but I have seen a few crossing roads and walking at the side of highways and wouldn't ever want to. It's sounds like they were skittish during hunting season.

A 4-lane highway at high speeds is unavoidable; but I live in a rural area and there was one hit not far from my house in broad daylight, the middle of the day, in perfect driving conditions on a road with a high school at the end of the street, 30 mph zone, so often times I think people aren't paying attention, are wrapped up in their own activities. Sometimes, people can't even wait for the police to clear the poor animal from the road before they hit the accelerator to get on with whatever it is that just can't wait a few minutes. I tend to drive on the alert for them when it's dark or visibility is poor.

On highways of course, it's another matter. Some studies have been done about creating underpasses, box culverts and bridges for wildlife to use, and initial studies show (via hidden camera) that they do tend to use them, and avoid traffic. Why can't they be implemented? Let's hear it, all together now, "it's too expennnnnnnnnsive!" Experts doubt whether it can be more expensive than car collisons and personal injury.

I love them too, and they come to visit me regularly. Sometimes we put out food for them in winter; but I worry that it could put them in danger of being hit by cars.

Well, my male cat, shall we say, has taken a real shining to Frank, and has his way with him on a regular basis.

When he hit puberty, Peabunny, our male rabbit (and 4 lbs. at the time), took a shining to our female cat, who was 20 lbs at the time. She took umbrage with this and got up to walk away. He hung on for dear life, going to town all the while. She bit him on the ear and the part of his ear below the bite came off, so he now has only 2/3 of one of his ears. He still loved her until her dying day, and would snuggle up to her every chance he got even after he was neutered.

When I was visiting a friend of mine, I noticed she had an oven mitt on the floor and her iguana was approaching it. He proceeded to dominate the oven with head bobbing, take hold of it by the thumb, and as Destiny would say, have his way with it. When he was done, he would lay on top of it for a while and then he would eventually slink off.

A rabbit is just about the sweetest animal in the world. My bunny, when I still had him, took a shining to my Siamese cat too - ordinarilly, she'd hiss, claw and bite a stranger, but for some reason, she only swatted him, but still remained aloof. He loved everybody. I'm thinking of maybe getting another bunny, that's how loveable they are, and smart too. We do have a pair of wild New England cottontails in "the Outback" of our yard - as well as all kinds of birds, wild turkeys and bald eagles, a fox family, woodchucks, racoons, sqirrels both red and gray, chipmunks and the occasional coyote who comes strolling by, so I keep my pets indoors! :)

LOL, Wicked!

I still need to buy Donnie Darko - I need to watch it again. And again. That movie was so bizarre, though. But I know I missed alot that first time around. That bunny creeped me out - kind of like Burger King's mascot, that king guy. He's like a scary clown, that guy. Won't go to Burger King because of him.
I think I'm with you, Deer Lover; I'll always go to Brokeback. Lol, I've gone to Brokeback so many times, it isn't funny.
And October Sky is a huge favorite of mine. I like all the kids in that one and I also liked Laura Dern. The mother was good, oh and Chris Cooper was good, too. Homer Hickum was supposed to speak somewhere around here like last week or something. That would've been something to have gone to see him. His story is incredible.

I like those pictures of Jake from Donnie Darko. His eyes have a strange look to them.

The thing about deer is sometimes they can come out of nowhere. You know that if the sun is just starting to set or starting to rise, they could be out. And you know if it is rut season, they could be out. And hunting season as well. The thing about that highway hit is they came up over the overpass bridge. So I didn't see them until they leapt onto the highway and well, when it's a 4-lane interstate and you have cars behind you, if it's going to be me or the deer, well....guess it's going to have to be the deer.

London, where are you? I haven't seen you for a little bit or did I miss you? Are you going to be putting in some recipes tomorrow?

Ohhhhhh, this is such a droooooughhht (drought). Isn't it painful? It's very sad indeed when all you get over like a 10 month period (seems like it anyway) is a 2 minute bit on E. Tonight. Thank goodness for your daily bits, Special & Wicked.

Okay, gonna end with a few groaners. Got these in an email yesterday. Don't know the source:

1. How do you catch a unique rabbit? Unique up on it.

2. How do you catch a tame rabbit? Tame way.

3. What do fish say when they hit a concrete wall? Dam!

4. What do eskimos get from sitting on the ice too long? Polaroid's

5. What do you call a Boomerang that doesn't work? A stick

6. What lies at the bottom of the ocean and twitches? A nervous wreck

7. What do you call four bullfighters in quicksand? Quattro Sinko

Okay, I'll stop! LOLLLL! Now have a good afternoon! TTYL

^^ Cute! :)

I loved October Sky, a lot. Not only is Jake wonderful, but Chris Cooper is great, as he always is. I loved the part where he steps in and stops a father's abuse of his son. Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. I should watch Donnie again. Bye for now! ;)

Girl, I am SEVERELY freaked out by the Burger King guy. Something is just really wrong there and I can't take it!

I'm thinking of maybe getting another bunny, that's how loveable they are, and smart too.

Get two, Deerlover. I have never seen animals bond with each other like two bunnies. We've had Pea both by himself and with a companion, and he is soooo much happier with a companion.

Rabbits and iguanas oh my!

My cat Danny also took a shine to my other cat, a female, but she fights back and Frank doesn't.

LOL PG, thanks for the laugh (or more like my groaning laugh). I love things like that, as does my gf, I'm going to send them to her right now.

Makes sense, Wicked. The place where we get our deer food, a farm feed store, usually has a bunny or two around, and every now and then there's a birth - once there was the cutest champagne beige lop-eared baby bunny, and it was all I could do not to take him home right then and there - but what stopped me was whether I should get a companion. He or she had brothers and sisters of all color combinations too (another cute grey one). My hub will love you for confirming I get two instead of one. It helps if you can't decide between how cute they all are. ;)

Darko is a film that doesn't make me just want to watch it, but keep watching it because I keep seeing knew things in it. And it is the type of movie that makes sit and think. Not just of the overall themes of the movie, but the small little thing tucked and hidden. The way the characters, the actors, the performances, the nuances. Darko can be studied, discussed and written about.

I'm not saying everything I watch has to be at this level of films, far from it I love all kinds, but its nice to have a film or two that you tuck back into and really look at.

I want to say it kind of like rereading Franny and Zoey. You don't reread it to read the story but more about reading it to see where you are at and how far you've come since the last time you read it. Does that make any sense?

Hey PG, Spesh and all, I am still around :) Love the Donnie post, also loved Laura Dern in DD and thought Jake was very special in it. Maybe American Beauty would have been too much of the same.

Wrt cooking klatch, my recipe begins "go to shop and buy one box of Betty Crocker mix ..." you get the idea.

LOL, Wicked :D

Yes. I really should watch Darko again. I like to re-read or re-watch certain things that make impressions on me. Darko is a great film. Funny how some of the best works of film and literature, and theater, really aren't appreciated at the time, but later on are. :)

I haven't had the brain cells to watch DD lately. Last time I went back and watched one of Jake's films it was Bubble Boy.

London!! Big hug to you. Aunt Betty, yes, I know her well, too, as well as Uncle Duncan. lol

You know, I don't know about there in London, but at the grocery stores here, it's all about the Deli section. Readymade everything. You can find about anything you might want to take to a snackday or whatever. Do you know that Cool Whip now makes a tub of the cheesecake filling? You know, to make one of those quickeasy cheesecakes, you had to mix the cream cheese, Cool Whip, and sugar (I think?) then put it in the graham cracker crust. Now Cool Whip makes that filling already ready to go. You just scoop it out and plop it into the readymade crust. LOL! It does not get any easier than that. But it's expensive $$$.

Bubble Boy is like movie crack - if its on - you stop and have to do it.

Beards at the Milk Premiere

Anonymous said...

Never noticed the other bunnies. The rebirth and innocence thing and the sex thing all make sense.

Anonymous said...

After a few viewings I noticed that Frank the person who wore the mask was an artist! For me the rabbit as symbol of fertility is also The Artist - as is Rich Kelly writer/director - and Donnie (whose ambition is to be writer and illustrator) -

Cute link, Spesh.

I have to say I love this song.
The singer sounds like Robert Smith of The Cure. ;)

I'm gonna have to watch Darko again before I can have an intelligent discussion about it.

Beards at the Milk premier is hilarious. Most of them look terrible with beards, the only one I think looks good is Brolin, although Franco is not bad either.

m/M, about some of your earlier comments, your camp rhetorics look good on paper but have no value in practice. HW is quite is sync with its viewers, I am afraid. And how can you equate what to expect from the head of the country from what you expect from entertainers?

Anonymous said...

Speaking of the Milk premiere/screening Tuesday in New York, Ang Lee was there. There are photos of him standing with Emile Hirsch.

Special K, do you think that Jake really married the Chin?

If HW was in sync with it's viewers, Brokeback Mountain would have won best movie, as it deserved. Nuff said on that issue.

Good catches on Darko. I have not watched that one in a long time. I finally watched Brodre this week, which I had recorded weeks ago. It was well acted, but not sure why anyone felt a need to remake it. I don't see Brothers drawing a big audience based on the story.

Just read that OTH's last episode drew their lowest ratings. Surprised by that - I thought it was fun. Not like there was anything else on that was that great either.

Two people who love each don't need a judge or a piece of paper, they need just to pledge to each other. But giving the opportunity to do legally should be given to EVERYONE.

So no - I don't mean the General.
I totally mean Toothy and his Goose.

Looks like we have some guests tonight.

Hey, NETB & M, what's with the caps? Your guys' names are all in caps - it threw me, lol, didn't recognize you for a second.

Hey, Destiny, I saw something on my yahoo news when I just got on - something about California's highest court is going to listen to some arguments against the ban on samesex marriage. Is there something happening on that front?

What a short night. Gotta hit the ol' hay. One more day to go. Sweet dream-o.

I saw that too PG about California's Supreme Court agreeing to take the case. I know there is a schedule for both sides to get in briefs by the end of January, beyond that I have no idea how long they usually take to make decisions.

Hey PG, If you still have those two Heath movies you should watch them. Two Hands is really good and he doesn't die or get hurt. Candy is alittle sad at the end but not because anyone gets killed. Just a sad love story.
