The Moon or Bust?

Sorry for the delay - technical difficulties with a temperamental internet connection.

It looks like the famous or is it becoming infamous at this point moon project of Doug Liman's is getting pulled off the launch pad for some retooling. This time "Black Hawk Down" screenwriter Ken Nolan has been brought on to rework the script.

The original draft lunar colonoization was written by Liman and John Hamburg, and what's weird and oh such a Hollywood kind of coincidence that someone associated with Black Hawk Down should be taking a crack at it – the book’s writer, Mark Bowden has already revamped the script once, as well as Liman and Hamburg had a rewrite at it as well.

Some say the movie is gonna be more summer blockbuster stuff like Armageddon, or Deep Impact than serious sci-fi , like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Now if they've had these many guys writing, why can't we have a go. So come on get creative get a little crazy. Here's the pitch - you come up with the story.

You have a young brash captain who is heading up the first lunar expedition in 35 years:

What happens next?

Romance ? Courage? Valor? Redemption Explosion of asteroids? Rough waves in the Sea of Tranquilty?

Aliens? Astronaut gone rogue? Mysterious moon illness? Crazy hijinks with a stowaway cat and a monkey? Is the moon really made of Cheese and Jake astronaut and chef the only one to know what to do before the sun melts it?

2001 meets Rocket Man with a whole lot of Bubble Boy?

Star Wars meets Armageddon and Space Cowboys with a Twist?

The Moon meets Rocket Boys and Pilgrim's Progress?

Deep Impact meets Outbreak with Titanic proportions?

Capricorn One meets All the Right Stuff and the Hunt for Red October?

Josie and the Pussycats meets The Lost Saucer and the Great Space Coaster? Woo Hoo!

Come on see what you do get this off the ground, obviously Dougie needs the help.

What is that first picture? It's beautiful.

It's color picture of the moon. If you look at the large blue spot to the right, that's the Sea of Tranquility.

I just managed to catch up with the posts of the last few days and I might have missed something but wanted to point out that with Ted's first two items from Monday, #1 had to do with a question about GG, and then the 2nd was a comment about Austin in 'Prayers for Bobby' Did anyone mention the relative importance of these two items having some connection to each other?

Glad to sense you're feeling much better now Special. Still checking in and appreciative of your efforts with OMG Special and Wicked. A big HI to all the gang here.

Hi Seaweed!

destiny said...

That is a stunning photo of the moon.

I'd like to see an old-fashioned, story driven movie. Something serious, but with room for humor. Hopefully the constant re-working of the script meanst that is what they're aiming for, rather than an effects-driven movie. But not too arty either. I'm struggling to come up with sci-fi examples and can't, except for maybe a less bleak Bladerunner. What does keep popping into my mind is John Ford. His movies always looked great, had good stories, sometimes had subtle plitical messages, and yet were still entertaining.

Seaweed, I don't think anyone talked about that specifically. Ted is now mentioning Austin and GG both, the way he often does with Jake and TT. I think that is because Austin is now working on things that are getting attention, so it doesn't look so strange, for lack of a better word, to work in a reference to him.

How about not making every little thing Jake does about the bearding then?

Since for the last 15 months, 90% of "Jake News" has been about his bearding, I don't know what you are talking about.

This is, a part of the problem. Some believe he is bearding and can't seem to talk about nothing but bearding as if they know what is happening in his life 100% of the time. I personally find this disturbing and a bit crazy. I agree with Born in 1980's view.

I give special props to Special K and Wicked for a funny and enlightening blog. They have given everyone here a place to voice their opinion and that's great. Even though I do not always agree with some of their views and they may not agree with mine, but I must say that the babbler comments here and on that other site are without any sane arguments and kind of like dealing with someone with special needs. They can't help it.

Anonymous said...

Let me clarify my earlier post.

Calling someone a babbler has no bearing or impact on someone posting sane and intelligent post, even if the comments are not of the popular opinion. It seems to be done on a total knee jerk, out of control and irrational reflex.

One thing I forget was Space Camp meets Officer and a Gentleman.

The Moon Project has a lot of directions that it could go. Colonization does have potential but it could go schlocky real quick if not handled right. Exploration and new challenges and rules in building a new society could have a a lot in terms of a story themes and starting dialogs. (ie more Sci Fi art house) But is that what Paramount wants for their picture? Or do they want something more blockbustery a summer flick that has big blast off and be a quick flight, and then try for a relaunch with a DVD.

But you know what - if you did it right it could be a great a Tropic Thunder kind of treatment about Space. I could see Jake playing it super serious and getting the laugh.

destiny said...

I have a feeling studios are going to be looking to play it super safe with their movies given the current economic environment and the fact that comedies and schlock seem to rule at the box office every week. And we all know studios can't see any further than yesterday's news. But there's good schlock (the first 3 Star Wars movies) and bad schlock (the last 3 Star Wars movies).

Now this would be my pick - "You ain't no officer, and you ain't no gentleman!" ;)

Beautiful picture of the moon, like sparkling jewels.

Great song *blush* ;)

Rewriting the script does not bode well for the project. How many more times will they go at it before they drop it entirely.

Love today's music selection.

Ted does usually put the people behind his blind vices in his column around the time of the vice. Not 100%, but mostly.

KamaSutra thinks Reeke is hot? They are the coldest couple ever photographed. Nothing about them even implies that they have sex with each other. I did notice this week that Ted said there is no power couple in HW. Another slam to Reeke I think.

I forgot to add that I thought it was interesting that Jake referred to himself as a faker in the Fincher talk. Freudian.

I Missed the excitement I was out on boat a few days. Good cross movie for Jake is moon movie and Soapdish. RDJ was in ti and Jake is living it. "way out there" and full of drama. haha

Anonymous said...

M ita reeke looks like theres no sex togehter. Jake has more sexual chemistry with Ellen.

Anonymous said...

what are the brown lines on Jakes jeans?

Anonymous said...

That moon project is it, right? That's all Jake had signed for in the near and now distant future?

Nailed is the can, Brothers will be released soon and then there's PoP, a franchise in the making that hinges on the success of the first one, but that's not out until 2010.

He's got nothing, we've heard about nothing - except that Joe Namath thing, and I hope to all that heavenly and sacred he doesn't take that one - there's not even any real rumors about upcoming projects.

Wasn't Reeke meant to get him work?

Seems the opposite has happened.

Ellen is the only one to whom Jake has proposed.

Wake up and smell the roses, people!

Reeke shopping and holding hands [what else lol] at Beverly Glen market today. Jakes in a bowler hat, no comment.

Anonymous said...

Following a trip to visit with a friend, Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon looked quite happy to be enjoying a relaxing afternoon at the Beverly Glen Market on Wednesday afternoon (February 4).

The cute couple walked along side-by-side, with Jake wearing a white t shirt and black bowler hat while Reese donned her iconic aviator sunglasses, making funny faces as she squeezed past a few parked cars.

As previously reported by Gossip Girls, Reese is taking advantage of a little downtime as she gets ready to promote the upcoming 3-D flick “Monsters v Aliens” - which hits theater on March 27.

A synopsis of the DreamWorks flick tells: “When a meteorite from outer space hits a young girl and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years”

New Kids on the Block singer Jonathan Knight has been outed by his ex-boyfriend in the latest issue of the National Enquirer.

27-year-old Brazilan model Kyle Wilker tells the mag that Jonathan says, “We had a wonderful relationship. I was in love with him and I believe he was in love with me.”

The ex-couple met at a bar on Fire Island that Kyle was working at and ended their relationship after 18 months.

Kyle adds that Jonathan is a homebody who likes to stay at home, watch TV and read. He says, “I call him a straight guy who happens to be gay.”

Smiling and happy? Not the pics I saw. Maybe more will show up. The usual put a gun to my head and make me walk with her look. I think Jake looks stupid with the hats. If he needs to hide, stick to the beenie.

I'm guessing Jake does not even plan to do the Moon movie. How could he make such a decision with no script. He just needs to have a project in the hopper for negotiation purposes.

I'm not into kiddie movies. The trailer for Aliens vs Monsters did not look remotely interesting.

Another great song today. I always turn off my sound at work, so I don't get to listen during the day. Then when I hear something I really like I have to listen to it a dozen times before I go to bed. Like tonight.

Strangely enough, today's brilliant moon and Special K's blog-post reminded me of Xanadu:

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

I would be inspired by Xanadu and Kublai Khan for the Moon Project. And I would name the main acts of my script according to the mares in the moon: Tranquility, Serenity, Fecundity, Crises and Nectar.

Interesting Austin entry- he seems to be an intelligent, thoughtful young man.

Unfortunatly it is also a field day for Jakes PR - an OMG regular makes himself looking like a fool and is showing his disrespect for Austins work.

Read early 2007 OMG posts: Rattler's posts used to be regular-speak. He must be taking pretentious pills now. Ignore him like I do.

Anonymous said...

London, I thought the same thing when I saw Jake's hat and sunglasses - he looks like a 50s ska or rocksteady musician. Made me immediately think of "A Message to You Rudy" by the "Specials". That was a hint, Special. ;)

Rattler, I loved your Xanadu moon project thoughts. That picture of the moon is beautiful.

Just because people choose themselves to be closeted does not mean people have to choose to play along with the "game", just as an agnostic, I do not have to argue my spiritual views with the bible as a first premise. There is absolutely no reason why people have to agree to keep silent on the sexuality of Jake Gyllenhaal, Austin Nichols, Queen Latifah, Ricky Martin, Anderson Cooper, Michelle Rodriguez, Jodie Foster etc.

I never thought I'd see a day where I'd respect Clay Aiken mroe than Jake Gyllenhaal, but there you go.
Tom's comment may have been a little tacky (because it was sarcastic; not because of the same-sex associations), but it was not "Deplorable. Disgusting. Unfortunate." - o, the humanity! o, the terrible crime of being tainted with "the gay!" Rattler, I suggest you take a good look at your (internalized?) and perhaps subconscious homophobia.

It was a good post by Austin and he sounds like an interesting guy.

Anonymous said...

I never thought I'd see a day where I'd respect Clay Aiken mroe than Jake Gyllenhaal, but there you go.

Aint that the truth.

Anonymous said...

While Tom's comment is indeed out of place among the OTH fans "OMG! You and Sophia would be SOOOOO hot together!" posts, I highly doubt that the veil of doom has been drawn over OMG because of it.

Two very small blogs with limited traffic are the cause of Reeke PR salivation?

Rattler's over reaction is worthy only of a "Oh, Mary, please!"

There is a place and time for everything, and I think it is wrong for someone from OMG to post about J&A on a blog like that. It's trollish behavior that seems to be driven by anger, it's not going to change anything, and it just makes us look like a bunch of lunatics who only care about one thing, outing J&A.

I see no problem with flaming away on gossip sites, imdb, etc., those are all basically public forums in which people talk about things like that. But I think it is wrong to do that at places like IHJ, WWD and Southern Gothic.

Anonymous said...

Why would it be wrong to post about J&A on IHJ or WWD? Those sites post about Reeke all the time.

Anonymous said...

Because these two sites have made it clear that rules of the road do not include what is to them driving on the wrong side of the street.

Anonymous said...

You're welcome. Noone figured out what the child thing was? Little happy blonde girl leaping with donkey and animals?

Anonymous said...

What? Where?

Anonymous said...

Maybe I was being too hasty Just Curious. I do think it is wrong to have posted something like that on a site like Southern Gothic. But you're right, IHJ and WWD are not the same, although I personally would not post things about J&A over there.

As for IHJ, what's the point? I view the place as a resource, so why do things you know they wouldn't like. They have the right to have the kind of community they want, and personally I see no reason to disturb them.

Same with WWD. Plus I don't see that they post about Reeke on WWD, but I don't go over there on a daily basis. I know the babblers post over there, but I didn't think they really talked about Reeke. I think of that site as being about Jake's work.

Anonymous said...

^WDW started to be pro-Reeke. It has Reeke pics all the time and Reese is specifically mentioned in the posts. I stopped visiting for this reason. It is no longer neutral.

destiny said...

The print on whatever was on the bench seat next to Jake looked like a pattern you would see on children's clothing. But it could have belonged to the table next to them since it is in only one of the pictures. It is really common when you have tables next to each other for people from both tables to just pile things in the middle, I do it all the time.

Second, I don't for a minute think that whoever took that picture would have failed to get a picture of a baby or child with Jake and RDJ. The poster who mentioned the sighting a week or so back said nothing about a kid.

I think Baby Tile was at home with the nanny or with Austin.

destiny said...

Okay wait, I didn't catch that, RC are you saying that you did provide the picture, and that there was a kid there?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the explanation Destiny.

It's true that WDW is no longer the Switzerland of Jake sites, although it continues to be a great resource.
