Today's Out Spotlight is the Point Foundation.
Point Foundation is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students of merit.
One of Point's co-founders, Bruce Lindstrom, grew up knowing only private despair and a fear of rejection. In his words, “every child has an innate fear of ‘abandonment’ or ‘rejection’ and that fear came true for me.”
"When Bruce’s family discovered he was gay, they rejected him for fifteen years. They “turned their back on evil.” No birthday cards. No phone calls. No Christmas gifts – in fact, Christmas gifts were returned when he would reach out. He never felt more alone at any time in his life.
That loneliness and helplessness eventually became the wellspring for Point – “I didn’t want what happened to me to happen to other LGBT youth,” says Bruce.
Bruce worked his way through college and eventually graduate school. In the early 1970’s, Bruce, a young entrepreneur at the time, met a gentleman by the name of Sol Price and together, they formed what was at the time a little known entity called, The Price Club, which eventually became Costco, and well. . . the rest is history."
After a wildly successful business career, Bruce and his long time partner Carl Strickland, wanted to give back.
In 2002, Bruce and Carl and a few of their close friends fully funded the first Point Scholars – a total of 7 amazing individuals.
And Since its inception Point Foundation has invested over $3 million in the education of outstanding LGBT students.
Point provides scholarships, mentorship, leadership training and hope for students of merit who have been marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
Additionally, Point Foundation provides programs that affect social change by challenging attitudes that contribute to social stigma and its resulting prejudice, which is often experienced by those in the LGBT community.
A Point Scholarship is the most substantive academic award of its kind, in most cases covering the cost of tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation and living expenses. The comprehensive scholarships allow students to excel in the classroom, on campus and in their communities.
Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and to give back to the LGBT community through the completion of an individual community service project each year. In addition, scholars are matched with mentors from the professional world through Point’s Mentoring Program; mentors lend their professional expertise and career guidance and become important role models to scholars. The Mentoring Program and Point’s professional support network equip scholars with skills to ensure a lifetime of leadership, success and well-being.
Point Foundation Mentors also assist Point Scholars with professional career decisions, including the pursuit of graduate studies, internship placement and job opportunities after graduation. Additionally, each Point Mentor oversees the design and completion of an annual community service leadership project that is required of each scholar. Throughout the year, Point Mentors and Scholars work collaboratively to set goals and objectives that build leadership skills through service.
By helping students obtain a solid educational foundation, Point is building a future generation of leaders committed both to personal achievement and to extending their privilege to others in similar circumstances.
On average, a Point Scholarship awards $13,200 in direct financial support, in addition to the programmatic support Point provides in leadership training and mentoring. The average amount of annual support devoted to each scholar is between $26,000 - $31,000. Point’s multifaceted support for scholars extends far beyond their time in school.
The organization’s growth over a short period of time is noteworthy. In its first year, Point received 268 applications and granted eight scholarships. In 2008, approximately 1,344 applications were submitted and a record-breaking 27 students were granted scholarships. As of October 2008, there are 90 Point Scholars currently enrolled in school and 42 Point Alumni.
The Point Foundation also recently announced the recipients of its Courage, Inspiration and Legend Awards to those individuals and companies who have made differences in the LGTB community. This years recipients are : Silvio Horta, Creator and Executive Producer of the ABC-TV series, Ugly Betty, who will receive the Point Courage Award; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP will receive the Point Inspiration Award; and the inaugural Point Legend Award will be presented to play writer, librettist, screen writer, novelist and director, Arthur Laurents (Gypsy, West Side Story).
The Point Courage Award recognizes an individual who has advocated for the future of the LGBT community and lives with the vision that investing in today's potential will produce a brighter tomorrow.
The Point Inspiration Award recognizes a corporation that champions respect and inclusion of the LGBT community, and operates with the vision that the success achieved by talented young people is limited only by the resources and opportunities they are given to help them fulfill their potential.
The Point Legend Award is presented to an individual who has, through the course of their lifetime, achieved greatness in their professional career and unapologetically supported the LGBT community.

A beautiful post, as always. Very sad that his own family turned their backs on their son like that, for fifteen years. But very uplifting that he could turn his experiences into something positive, to help others be the best they can be, who in turn will help others. :')
Fantastic Out Spotlight. I love Sunday on OMG. I'm going to find a Costco and shop there in honor of Bruce. I can't imagine having a child and essentially pretending they were dead because I disagreed with their lifestyle.
Really enjoy the spotlight special Kat it’s one of the things that makes OMG so different , The vibe I get from OMG is that it's a friendly place were people can discuses all thing Jake and Austin sometimes disagreeing with each other but always being respectful.
The diverse range of people that you have chosen to spotlight and the curage and strength they have each in their own way displayed inspires me.
This question I have is slightly off topic and you may think I am completely of base
Ryan’s movie The Bang Bang Club sounds good maybe even Oscar worthy it seems to have all aspects the Academy likes to reward going by recent years would Reese be concerned any thoughts tr
sorry for the long post.
Welcome Sienata and Skye!
Other peoples' treasures stay where they belong. :)
Wow. My husband is addicted to Costco. I had no idea of the founder's background. I am amazed at how you find all these interesting stories.
Team Reese would not be happy with Ryan getting attention for anything positive. BBC is typical of the movies he chooses (interesting, topical, small). It is not affiliated with a studio but they do have worldwide distribution set up which is good. I really doubt they are shooting for Oscar. The people producing are very close to the subject matter and just want the story to be told.
Expect an US Weekly cover with Reese and Jake's baby plans timed to coincide with the release :-)
Just want to make something clear, and please bear with me -
I asked that Spesh edit my post that I quoted because in retrospect, I thought it was disrespectful and cavalier about an issue I take seriously. Initially, I thought it was cute, Atticus at La Brea, but hit the send button before I read it fully, the part about Native American burial grounds. I don't consider this a laughing matter nor meant to offend, and I did not want my name associated with it, and asked that it be removed. I did not post the original, and of course the original poster is free to post whatever they want. I don't know who felt the need to repost, but I am not "Curator" either. Thanks, and my apologies! :)
Welcome Skye!
It's always great to have new people find us and find out what we're all about. Hope that you enjoy OMG and come back more.
TR, why has US Weekly become a shameless clearing house for Reeke "exclusives?"
No coincidences in Hollywood. They have a deal.
Remember when the divorce happened there was a kerfuffle because Ryan's quotes were given to In Touch when an exclusive deal for all divorce quotes had been struck by BWR with People? At the time Reese and Ryan were repped by BWR but Nanci didn't want to deal directly with Ryan so she outsourced him and that person screwed up and put his quotes in the wrong publication. There is a specific process involved in handling the tabloids and using them to get your message out. I've said it before NOTHING appears there by accident. Let's see if I can recall the steps:
1. Upset/Pissed Off Star
2. Manager gets blasted
3. PR Gets involved
4. Manager and PR create a set of themes that will turn the tide in the desired direction
5. PR Calls friends in publishing and agree on strategy in return publisher gets $$ or special access
6. Story gets "written"
7. PR approves story
8. Story appears
9. People believe story
10. Star is put at ease and assured by manager that they are loved and admired.
Thanks TR!
11. PR and/or star read what is posted about them on the internet - negative, disbelieving, cruel, mocking - and a new strategy, bliztkrieg with the paps, and following all the prompts from bloggers and posters, in order to fix in danger of permanently sinking agenda.
Step 11 is to have interns spam the internet with OMG I HEART HER SO MUCH SHE IS SO MY ROLE MODEL!! Step 11 also includes attempting to remove computer equipment from star's home to avoid late night screaming crying phone calls.
Awesome spotlight Special. I really look forward to your spotlights every Sunday. Thank you so much for all the research you do. I always learn something new. What a wonderful idea born of a tragic personal struggle. Just goes to show how some ppl turn a bad situation into a very good one. Bravo Bruce.
Welcome Skye : )
TR, I take it Jake has to be privy to this. What a doormat he is. And the thing is it's destroying whatever cred he had as a film actor. He's quickly becoming another Ben Affleck--which is not a compliment. What happened to Jake being in demand? I guess as long as he's attached appendage like to someone more famous and successful than he, that's just as good.
i just find that amazing about the tabs and how they work with the pr firms to distribute info. it makes sense, but it really takes the fun out of reading the mags. it's like christmas morning the year after you find out about santa.
Ok.. here's my ? of the day. We ALL know, in excruiating detail, that Reese is one of the highest paid actresses in Hwood. Woo hoo. But does anyone know where Jake stands in that line? I know he didn't make much initially off BBM - don't know if he got money after it did well or how that worked. As for his other movies, i don't know anything about what he got paid, but i can't imagine he's commanding a lot these days, since he hasn't had anything good (box-office wise) in years.
If they were a REAL couple, i think this would be an issue, don't you? It always seems to be an issue with actors/actresses when the woman is more successful than the man.
I'm interested to hear what ya'll think about that.
PS: i'm Ssienata and SiennaB.
Please keep in mind that Reese doesn't get her high(est) salary for every movie (Rendition, Penelope).
Jake - got 7 mill for Rendition. I would say up to 10 mill for PoP, less for Brothers and Nailed.
Re: Jake's salaries... that's not so bad. I know it costs a lot to BE them, to live the lifestyle, etc. I wonder if Jake is helping out his mom any? Their problems are so sad, and i find it even sadder that we haven't seen many pics of him with either of them since their news broke. I guess that doesn't do anything to promote Reeke, and if pics are just for promotion, it makes sense.
Jake's parents managed to sell their holiday house ($3.1 mill), that should fix pending financial problems.
If they were a REAL couple, i think this would be an issue, don't you? It always seems to be an issue with actors/actresses when the woman is more successful than the man.
Remember Reese and Ryan presenting some award (I think it was Oscars) together and him saying, "You read the winner, you make more money than I do."
Been having a great time with PG and Dest!
Wasn't there a recent photo of Reeke with Jake's mother?
I haven't seen a photo of Jake and his dad in a long time though.
Been having a great time with PG and Dest!
Great to hear
I'm glad you guys are having fun on your trip. I did a couple of slash trips with BBM folks and they were so cool. It's awesome to get to hang out with folks who care about the weird stuff that you care so much about, and that the rest of the world thinks you're nuts because of!
yes, there was one Reeke and Momma G. series of pics lately. In my own evil brain, i figured that was just to keep Reese from looking like a bitch for keeping him away from his mom during her bad times.
and yes, i did read that there was some issue between R & R about $. i would not want to be hooked up with her on anything other than equal footing, and i don't think Jake is in that position right now.
yes, there was one Reeke and Momma G. series of pics lately.
But there was someone else in those in the background in one of those pictures. One tall man who was slim with a couple layers on. And it was clear that Jake looked different that day, not because of his mom being there, but I think because of the one tall man who was slim.
Welcome Sienata and Sky. We're a friendly bunch here. I just spent the weekend down in D.C. with Wicked and Prarie Girl and I had a blast! The weather was perfect, the cherry blossoms were beautiful, good eats--Greek tapas for dinner and this morning Wicked made us awesome banana pancakes from scratch--and good company. I'm always amazed at how we all have a lot more than just Jake and Austin in common. And yes, it is great to share things with someone you know is not going to give you the evil eye and call you crazy. :-D
Did Jake really make that much from Rendition? I didn't think the whole movie cost much more than 20-25 million, so I can't believe he would have got that much money. I thought he got $7 million for PoP, and he was supposedly paid $3 million for Jarhead. I also remember there was talk around the time of the Oscars and BBM about how he was supposedly holding out on movie projects hoping his salary would go up if he won. If true that backfired, and I think it probably hurt him in terms of getting work, another reason why I don't think he got that much for Rendition.
I wonder if Jake reads all the stuff about him on the internet, or if pr is honest about what is being said about him, about the lower traffic on sites like IHJ, etc.
Forgot to say, another great Spotlight. I knew Costco was a very progressive company--among other things, they have good health care plans for their employees, unlike Walmart/Sams--but I had no idea that Price Club was started by two gay men. I love Costco, and it's so nice to spend my dollars at a right-thinking place.
Banana pancakes sounds awesome, and i LOVE tapas... Greek tapas would be heaven! my sweetie lived in dc for a year and i loved going there for visits. we went to Annie's Paramount Steakhouse for brunch. It's in a very gay friendly district (can't recall the name grrrr have no memory) and it would be packed with M/M couples on sunday mornings, which i thought was made of awesome ever before i got brokebacked, and then after it was even more wonderful. he, on the other hand, felt like a fish out of water and i guess i don't blame him. it's hard to go from being mississippi redneck to my world. but he's getting there, step by step.
Sienata = SiennaB. it's easier to sign in with my lj id. if i'd known i could do that, i would've been doing that since the beginning.
your numbers sound right to me for JBG's salary. the others sounded a bit high, but since i have no clue, either set could be right. i believe i've heard $3 M for JH before. that's a lot of money, but after taxes and expenses, i wonder how long it lasts.
i guess i'm wondering if he's doing this whole Reeke thing so that he can make more money because he NEEDS it, or if he's just chasing the whole Movie Star thing. i've never thought of him as someone needing to be on the A-list all the time, so i hope that's not what's driving him.
I wondered about the similarity of the names Sienata. So what part of the country are you in? Or should I say world?
I think Jake is chasing the whole Movie Star thing, I think he craves the attention and thinks that somehow it will validate him. I think all of that because of an interview he gave many moons ago about not getting enough attention from his parents and thinking he'd get it from them with his movie roles. I can't imagine that he'll get what he's looking for that way though.
Speaking of the Movie Star thing, X17 has pictures of the birthday bash, although Jake is only barely in one of the pictures. The General makes sure she's front and center, and Jon Favreau is in 3/4 of them. They all have those glowing red devil eyes, which is pretty funny.
RDJ is that last person I would expect Reese to want to hang with. RDJ is gifted actor, and it looks like after a rocky road he really has things together. It's great and here's to what he has overcome and done and to successful future.
But I always got the impression that she would not have herself associated with some with past filled with drug use, rehab, relapses and incarceration. Just doesn't seem her kind to hanging with you know what I mean. I think it's interesting that she wants to be seen front and center.
Odd that they took so many Reese pictures but only one of Jake, but I guess they are on her payroll, not his. I did scan the crowd for some tell-tale ears but did not see Austin anywhere in the background.
10:58, Come on. Ryan was/still is a big pothead. This is hardly a secret in Hollywod.
Tabloid Headline
Hi, Let me introduce myself. My name is Special K. You might have seen me around here before.
those party pics were weird. i assume that was jake in the yarmulke (i've never seen him in one before). he looked more like a flunky than her date, and why did he have his back to the camera the whole time? even the commentary said "well, they must still be a couple in spite of the lack of recent pics or party pics." kinda interesting.
Special K.. Welcome! ;)
the diff between Heath and RDJ is that RDJ is still alive and making movies that make money, so he is somebody. Heath is dead, so he's a nobody and a failure in her book.
I just made myself not like her a little bit more. Yuck.
Another educational post for our Sunday Spotlight, I really do look forward to learning more about GLBT issues in terms of those at the forefront along with their stories.
Thanks once again Special, just want to join all the others in appreciation of our efforts.

Wicked, PG, and Destiny, so glad to hear that you are enjoying your visit together, and will look forward to even more details and stories after the fact.

Special K... I'm sorry that i haven't already commented on today's enlightening post. That was all news to me, and i while i found Bruce's story to be very sad, i think it's not surprising that something very good came out of it.
One interesting thing about this story is that Costco must obviously support gay issues. Walmart and Sam's, their big competition, is notably NOT gay friendly, or they weren't as of recently. They may be changing their tune now, but it's not because they've had a change of heart - it's more public pressure, i'm sure.
NETB, Daddy wasn't laughing at sacred burial grounds or making fun of them, not at all. That's why he very carefully sent the bones (my treat bones) he dug up when gardening in my yard over to the Natural History Museum to have them checked out. They're the ones, the people at the Museum, who laughed when they saw "this bone belongs to Atticus" etched on my beloved Hartz leather chew bones. Daddy respects things and people, he just isn't the brightest pup in the litter sometimes. Sorry Daddy didn't mean to offend you.
One thing I want to know is when Bruce's family finally accepted him, was it before or after he hit $$$$$ paydirt with Price Club? I bet big money and the inheritance potential helped the family to embrace him and Carl and their gay lifestyle a whole lot easier.
Heath is dead, so he's a nobody and a failure in her book."
A failure with an Oscar, which judging by the choices Jake is making, looks like he'll never get. Actually, the only reason why RDJ is alive and Heath isn't is because RDJ was lucky--the man overdosed regularly and took drugs like someone swallowing gum drops.
Yes, RDJ got lucky, and i can't really get my head around why No One seemed to be onto Heath. He looked like total hell his last few months, and some reports said he'd quit bathing as well. How could no one have picked up on that? Even worse than him dying like that is the sad truth that no one seemed to care enough about him to help him. Maybe Michelle wanted to, but she obviously couldn't do it alone. :(
Sienata, I thought you looked familiar!
yes, ted, i'm not trying to be stealthy at all. i wondered if you hung out over here. this seems like a place friendly to our feelings! :)
Check out the Jared pix of RDJ buying vitamins. he's wearing a black chain/leather strap necklace the same kind Jake wears. Wtf?
A lot of people forget that Ryan was part of the Oscar winning movie Crash. It just happened to win in the same year that Reese bought her individual Oscar.
You can see in recent pictures that Reese is going through some kind of early middle age crisis. She's trying to look sexy and mid twenties and like she's not the uptight snot she comes across as.
RDJ fits into the Reeke agenda for the following reasons
1. As above so Reeke can look somewhat hip through association
2. He's Oscar nommed so he's important enough to be seen with them
3. He's publicly rehabbed (even though there are plenty of rumours he isn't anywhere near rehabbed in real life)so Reese looks like a wonderfully understanding person, who whilst never stooping that low herself, can accept the world's losers (except Ryan, but that's okay cause he cheated on their contract.)
4. I believe that RDJ and Jake are genuine friends and for the reasons above RDJ is the officially approved famous Reeke actor friend.
Still like the singer guy, it's still people who were friends with Jake first. Where are her friends?
It's awesome to get to hang out with folks who care about the weird stuff that you care so much about, and that the rest of the world thinks you're nuts because of!
Big ITA.
we went to Annie's Paramount Steakhouse for brunch. It's in a very gay friendly district (can't recall the name grrrr have no memory)
Dupont Circle.
Been reading about the earthquake in Italy. Hopefully all our Italian friends are okay. Giusi, please check in and let us know you're okay.
Atticus, I know you and your Daddy didn't mean to offend. I just wanted to make sure I didn't offend anyone either with my LOL, and maybe I overdid it *blushes with embarrassment.* I thought it was very cleverly written, that's what was amusing. I try not to post anything that could be misinterpreted, but sometimes I hit the send button without thinking it through, and I would never want to demean someone's culture and traditions. Your Daddy seems like a very bright pup. And you're very cute, where have you been lately? :)
Glad everyone is having a great time in DC! :)
Welcome to Skye and Sienata, Sienata, I think I have read some of your stories. :)
