Missed Independence

Nightcrawler is the type of film that the Independent Spirit is about: small and smartly made, not originally funded by a studio, edgy, taking risks in storytelling that the studio system wouldn't risk.

The success of  Nightcrawler has carried past the critic's reviews and on to acclaim at the Independent Spirit awards.

Attending the awards director Dan Gilroy and his wife (and Jake's co-star) Rene Russo were the biggest representative of Nightcrawler.

At the awards Nightcrawler won two:

BEST SCREENPLAY - Dan Gilroy Nightcrawler

BEST FIRST FEATURE (Award given to the director and producer)
Nightcrawler
Director: Dan Gilroy
Producers: Jennifer Fox, Tony Gilroy, Jake Gyllenhaal, David Lancaster, Michel Litvak

Sadly Jake was not there but back in NYC with Constellations which ends its run in mid March.

While Jake was able to attend the Golden Globe in January,  it is interesting that he was unable to attended the biggest weekend in Hollywood.  For all the talk about him making film choices to position himself back into the award race, his absence is notable.

If he was really campaigning wouldn't he be in LA? ( Check this out about Oscar campaigning)  Maybe not presenting an award since his movie wasn't nominated, at it would be a bit awkward, but at least a part of the Academy scene.

Even more so the Independent Spirit award.  They are Jake's sweet spot, he came up an indie darling, and it is those films and that indie spirit where he really shines.  Jake's success is wrapped in independent films, and it is there where he could have the freedom both on and off screen that could bring him work-life balance.

OMG catch up:

So what's Jake been up to?

And Austin?

I woke up early to finish The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. Impressive woman and writer from Mississippi. Wow.  - AUS10

Although the painting by Carel Fabritius would have been far more interesting if the Goldfinch was chained to an actual fish (perch). - AUS10

Sometimes it's easy to forget that there is a reason for OMG a bit bigger than just a little blog that friends stop by to talk about Jake and Austin.

OMG wants to keep the reminder of their story from past to present.  So to that point OMG's going revisit and keep posting all those pictures, that seem to be getting "lost" out there in the big gossip round up.

First up for OMG's Picture This:

And as for the winter of Special's discontent:

Who knew there were Alps at MIT -  but this winter there is:

Dang Jake you could've filmed Everest right here and with REAL snow.

Snow Men

What would be December without a little snow? Or a lot for that matter.

There is plenty at Everest.

The real Everest, yes.

But what about movie Everest?

From looks of it, it appears Jake and Josh Brolin's teams are both plenty snowed.

Universal Pictures released a first look from ‘Everest,’ which is set to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on September 18th in the US and October 2nd in the UK. While the snow might not be real, the movie's story is:

Inspired by the incredible events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, ‘Everest’ documents the journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind.

 Happy Hanukkah!!

Sherpa Shut It Down

Can you shut down a mountain?  Apparently you can.

On Friday, April 18, there was an avalanche on Everest's southern side that killed 16 Sherpas who were tethered to ropes, preparing the route for mountaineers who were preparing for this year's climb. Thirteen bodies were recovered, and three others were buried under the debris and may never be found.

The Real Deal

Make Your Own Mountain Everest

It  was the worst single day accident in the history of Everest.  It surpasses the tragedy of which Jake's project  is based.

Between 2000 to 2010 only six Sherpas died on the mountain. The number of fatalities has been increasing even before last week's tragedy, with seven Sherpas dying during climbs in 2012 and 2013. The recent increase in fatalities may be due to more people climbing the mountain thus need for more Sherpas.

The Sherpas have closed the 2014  climbing season.

Following a meeting between government officials, Sherpas, and tour operators at Everest base camp, Nepal's tourism ministry said expeditions should proceed.  The Sherpas disagree.  They have said will not guide anyone up the mountain this year.

Forty teams were prepared to ascend Everest this year. As of  this past Thursday, 8 teams have already pulled out.  Most teams are in no mood to climb.  The number of people at the base camp has already fallen from about 600 to 100.

The ministry also announced this season's climbing permits, which cost between $25,000 and $150,000, will be valid for five years.

What impact will this make on Everest?  Will it throw the movie into limbo and push the movie back even farther? Will they try to push through and find someone to guide them?  Will they risk cast and crew?   Will Jake make a movie about Everest without ever put his foot in Nepal?

Getting to the root of it

Jake was the co-honorary chair for the Edible Schoolyards event, but was here there?  Or were his roots somewhere else.

Jake's been a long time supporter of the charity and one of it's ambassadors.

There is more chatter about Jake in Vancouver and working with Harrrison Ford.  (Tweet , Tweet)

With Jake still sporting the wild and woolie look in the most recent pictures out, could this work with Ford be part of Everest?  And it would seem that work would be a reason he would have missed the event.

So where do you think Jake was laying down roots last night?

Throw Back. Fly Back?

A former stylist who worked with Jake posted this for TBT

mr_wein · GREGORYWEIN.COMTBT: On set with JAKE GYLLENHAAL 💛 One of my favorite Hollywood men and nicest guy ever 🔥🔥🔥
 @jakegyllenhaal1 @men_with_panache #jakegyllenhaal #styledirector #stylist #styleicon #hothothot #gaggging #peekaboo

Which reminded OMG of another great throwback picture where Jake rocked the white tee.

But it seemed like Jake was in the mood for no pictures as he was leaving London

Could he have finished up the London part of his role for Everest and is going back stateside?

And why so shy?   Is it he thinking this is inconspicuous. Honey Please....
Or could it be the beard is gone and he is once again a fresh face dimples to die for dude?

Can we hope - just a little?

More to climb

Sam Worthington and  Robin Wright have been added to the cast of Everest. Worthington will play Guy Cotter and Wright will play Beck Weather’s wife, Peach.

Filming of Everest continues in England at the moment but when everyone gets to see the finished project has changed locations. (on the calendar) Original slate for February 27, 2015 it has been moved to September 18, 2015.  And that might not be a bad thing.

February is none to be were the studios put their weaker projected performers and while post-labor slots a better positions for those to be considered for award season.

The push back may also to give the director and crew more time for the digital work needed to enhance the experience for movie goers.

So it looks like Fall 2015 will be a one - two movie punch for Jake.

Jake said he was geeking over the Goonies when it came to his co-star will he admit the same for The Princess Bride (Wright).

  Management would say:

Who's the princess now?!?!

On the Green

Today was all about the wearing of the green, and for Jake that's not a problem since he is the New Mr. Green Jeans with those favorite cargos.

Speak of Jake it looks like Everest has moved on from Italy and off to England to Pinewood Studios.

This is the only kind of snow most want to see at this point of the year.

Jake won't have to worry about any real snow for a while, especially later this week when he is scheduled to appear in Spain to promote Enemy.

While Jake was wearing the green most of this past year, Austin was getting some Irish eyes a smilin' on three of his project this year.

From Parkland about the assassination of John F Kennedy of one of the most famous Irish-Americans ever to being a part of the Donovan crew who's fixer is another Irish-American by way of Boston too,  to playing Tommy Donnelly in the movie San Patricios.

And while it is the custom to wear green,

Austy you make an great case to be in the pink.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day
