Star Light, Star Can't Shine Bright?

Does Jake have to dim so that another star can shine?

You know what is missed - Jake's activism. Yes. he signed a kite for the Kite Runner and gave a lunch with him for the ACLU . But it is things like , Jake championing Get out to Vote like did in the past election. We know Jake is politically and socially active - he was raised in a politically and social conscious home, are we just not allowed to see that anymore? Has that been taken off the table by TPTB? Or did he decide that on his own? Is he not allowed to outshine the People's Choice activism? It just seems like Jake is not allowed to show the well rounded confident man that he was, for fear it will distract from the shiny star next to him.

Post this from Want Ted's post from the last thread. (From today's Awful Truth)

"A Scratch in Time?
While we’re told by giddy, gay real estate movers ‘n’ minders that Jake Gyllenhaal is buying swank, family oriented real estate in San Francisco’s Noe Valley (the boys are praying Reese doesn’t come along and put flowered curtains up all over the place)".

Anonymous said...

SF? Isn't that Reese's recent stamping ground really?

Interesting news from Ted. Does Jake want to distance himself from Hollywood or is this the beginning of heavier bearding (a la McBongo)?

Regarding the post, it seems that Jake has been stripped of everything he used to stand for. Too sad.

Noe Valley - A quaint area where people know each other's names, babies rule the sidewalks and outdoor cafes draw summertime crowds.

"....The hills that surround Noe Valley give it an air of remoteness and removal from the city which, along with the plethora of pretty, long-standing Victorians, is what attracts families with kids, dogs and strollers to the neighborhood."

"...Others joke about Noe Valley's mammoth stroller population and bourgeois sensibilities; columnist Debby Morse once quipped in the Examiner, 'Many Noe Valley walkers push babies in strollers, often using them as battering rams in crowded situations.' "

Jake allegedly dined with Chelsea Clinton, I wonder if it's Hilary that he's rooting for? :P

I don't know, i think in general, he's just keeping a low profile, despite all the Jeese stuff. While I admire he supports ACLU and various worthy organisations, I am not very fond of the idea of show business people sticking their nose into politics. Although Jake, in his interviews, is doing it in a better way - he shows that he cares about those issues, but he never made it like he's the voice of reason or authority, like Bono or something.

btw, re the last post when some poster said I said Jake is like T. Cruise, don't put word in my mouth. I am just saying if his PR team keeps this up - they are pushing him to be perceived like that.

Wow, I am really torn between wanting bona fide evidence of Jausty and feeling like Ted's openly speaking about them in this way is making it impossible for them to go under the radar.

I wouldnt be surprised if Reese has agreed to carry Jake's child, marriage optional. Surrogates/mother doners almost always already have children of thier own. This may be part of thier (R helping J&A) plan. Just saying.

Anonymous said...

I would be very surprised.

Wicked said...

I wouldnt be surprised if Reese has agreed to carry Jake's child, marriage optional.

The mini-van, soccer mom demographic that Reese seems to cater to would be shocked.

Special K said...

So would I. There would be way too much attention and explaining to do.

Most stars who have used surrogates, have someone who has been and is completely out of the public eye.

What do you all make of Ted leading his column off with Jake's possible relocation but not including Jake under the "Featured Celebrities" for the column? Just an oversight?

Anonymous said...

This is the second time Ted has done it. His last mention of Jake didn't have Jake's name under "Featured Celebrities" either.

Anonymous said...

He did the same with Austin and the digital dance column!

Anonymous said...

This house news confirms Ted's tidbit from last week, dontcha' think?

And with Reese shutting down all the marriage rumors...

Anonymous said...

So, Jake's visit to SF in December wasn't solely to visit Reese and kids. He was actually up there to house hunt/purchase and Evelyn saw a chance to get some Reeke mileage out of it.

Uh, isn't Noe Valley known as a strong GLBT neighborhood?

Anonymous said...

Posted on WFT:

San Francisco's gay village is most concentrated in the business district that is located on Castro Street from Market Street to 19th Street. It extends down Market Street toward Church and on both sides of the Castro neighborhood from Church Street to Eureka Street.
Although the greater gay community was, and is, concentrated in the Castro many gays live in the surrounding residential areas bordered by the Mission District, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. Some consider it to include Duboce Triangle and Dolores Heights which both have a strong LGBT presence.

Castro Street itself runs south through Noe Valley, crossing the 24th Street business district, and terminating a few blocks farther south as it moves toward the Glen Park neighborhood.

Fantastic news - :)

Great post, one of the things I love about Jake and his family is their willingness to get involved, and their concern and interest in things other than what's going on in HW. I hope we'll hear more as the election gets closer. This is a very important one.

I love the B-52s! Thanks for this one! ;)

Noe Valley, San Francisco, California
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Noe Valley is a neighborhood in the central part of San Francisco, California. Its borders are generally considered to be 21st Street to the north, 30th Street to the south, Dolores Street to the east, and Grand View Avenue to the west. These borders are understood to be somewhat flexible, particularly by real estate agents. The Castro (Eureka Valley) is directly to Noe Valley's north, although the border is not well defined and can stretch into Noe Valley, and The Mission is to its east.

Like many other San Francisco neighborhoods, Noe Valley started out as a working-class neighborhood for employees and their families in area's once-thriving blue-collar economy. Like other San Francisco neighborhoods, Noe Valley has since undergone successive waves of gentrification and is now considered an upscale, yuppie area. It is home to many urban professionals, particularly young couples with children, and it is not unusual for a well-maintained house in Noe Valley to sell for two million dollars or more [1].

Public transportation to Noe Valley is provided by the Muni 24, 26, 35, and 48 bus lines, and by the J Church Muni Metro line.

[edit] History
The neighborhood is named after José de Jesús Noé, the last Mexican alcalde (mayor) of Yerba Buena (present day San Francisco).

Noe Valley was primarily built up at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, especially in the years just after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. As a result, the neighborhood contains many examples of the "classic" Victorian and Edwardian residential architecture for which San Francisco is famous. As a working-class neighborhood, Noe Valley houses were built in rows, with some of the efficient, low-cost homes being more ornate than others, depending on the owner's taste and finances. Today, Noe Valley has the highest concentration of row houses in San Francisco,[citation needed] with streets having three to four and sometimes as many as a dozen on the same side of the same street. However, few facades in such rows of houses remain unchanged since their creation in the late 19th and early 20th Century.

Many Noe Valley streets were laid out and named by John Meirs Horner, who named Elizabeth Street after his wife and Jersey Street after the state where he was born. Most of Noe Valley is still called Horner's Addition for tax purposes by the city assessor's office.

One notable Noe Valley landmark is St. Paul's Catholic Church, featured in the movie Sister Act.

In the 1970s, many small businesses contributed to the image and perception of Noe Valley. A combination of old, traditional businesses and enlightened new entrepreneurs helped to build the reputation of Noe Valley as a hip and enlightened neighborhood. For example John DeCock, an environmental activist and local musician who went on to become Executive Director of The Sierra Club Foundation and Chief Executive Officer of Clean Water Action, began his professional career as the proprieter of a small record store, Silver Crescent Records, Noe Valley's first record store in 1975. As rents increased, many of these small entrepreneurial businesses, such as Cathexis, Color Crane, East of the Sun, the plant store run by Ron Green and cobblers and barber shops were casualties of gentrification and development. Surviving this transition in the neighborhood is a barber shop, Of Barbers and Bears, run by Stephanie Holstein and her father, who have served Noe Valley in various locations since the early 1870s. Ms. Holstein is skilled at doll-making and using old furs to make teddy bears; and as such, carries on the entrepreneurial spirit of the neighborhood.

[edit] Geography

24th and Castro
A purple house on Romain St near 21st and Douglass Sts.The topographic layout is actually two main valleys. One flows from the Clipper/22nd/Grandview area down 24th/Jersey to Church, and the other flows from the 27th/Diamond/30th area down Day to Church where it meets the first valley; the conjoined valleys then both exit the Noe Valley district. This makes the hilly area relatively dry, and the soil stable regarding earthquake liquefaction. Most houses up the hills sit directly on bed rock as can be seen at Douglass Park (bare red rock - radiolarian chert). Traffic flow is limited - one main North access through Castro Street to Eureka Valley, one main West access up Clipper Street toward the former Twin Peaks toll plaza and West of the city, several East access to Mission through 24th, Cesar Chavez and other numbered streets, and the main North-South Church Street access used by the J Church Muni Light Rail.

The neighborhood is primarily residential, although there are two bustling commercial strips. The first along Church Street, between 24th Street and 30th Street and the other along 24th Street, between Church Street and Castro Street.

[edit] Demographics
In November 2000, the Noe Valley Voice reported the following statistics for the neighborhood, citing a 1999 poll of registered voters by David Binder Research, a prominent local polling agency. [2] [3]

European American: 80%
Age 30-49: 53%
Female: 51%
Sexually straight: 71%
Rent housing (vs. own): 52%
College graduate: 78%
Democrat: 72%
Republican: 11%
Religious affiliation: 63%
Not religious: 38%

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, not holding my breath about that "new family oriented real estate"...

About Jake's activism being missed, I have to respectfully disagree with you Special. His verbal tango during the Rendition promo both on torture and the role of government actually makes me wish he would keep his opinions to himsfelf in the future.

Seems to me that politics and entertainment are converging more and more every day, if they've not totally merged already. Nothing to counter voters' mistrust and disenchantment IMO.

Anonymous said...

So what?

Anonymous said...

This is all certainly getting more interesting by the day.

Anonymous said...

Looks like no Oscarnominations for either Rendition or Zodiac.

Anonymous said...

Talking about Rendition, don't forget the DVD will be out on February 19. :)

Special K said...

I think during Rendition Jake spoke out during the press good point Frenchy. Since Rendition you have not seen him, and with the coming elections in the US it just seems that he would be as active as he has been in the past.

I don't think it is due to his lack of commitment or passion for political and social causes. But the fast few months it seem that out of the two of them. Reese has be the one in the shining spotlight for social causes.

It may be of choice on Jake's part, it may be on suggestion from his management, or it maybe that he has over commitments of his time at the present.

It seem like as time pass the more you see Jake move more the background and Reese move to the forefront that was what I was suggesting.

Anonymous said...

Respectfully adding my $.02 on actors and celebrities getting involved in political and other important social issues - I have to say that I like it when they do - they are under no obligation to do so, of course, but if they choose to, they really have the power to reach people. I think that's important. Where would we be without Leo DiCaprio and others' stand on global warming, he and Joaquin Phoenix taking the step to buy hybrid cars, those speaking out against the war in Iraq, professional athletes and actors calling attention to deadly diseases and education of children, Oprah Winfrey's work in Africa and Habitat for Humanity, Jake and the Rendition cast speaking out against torture in our name, and one of the most important, Jake and others getting involved in encouraging people to vote, just to name a few? I'm trying to dash this out at work, so please forgive me if I'm incorrect with or have missed any information.

Also on a personal level, I just like to hear what the people I admire and see in films have on their minds. :) I can't wait to see a little of Jake and Maggie's fire come election time!

Anonymous said...

I must be having a particularly stupid day as I fail to see the significance of the particular mountain ?? is making out of this molehill.....maybe it's just me.

I'm disappointed no noms for Zodiac. I thought it was a fantastically atmospheric, complex thriller. Loved RDJ, but I did enjoy Jake's low-key performance as an uber-nerd. ("Do you mind that people call you short?" "No, do you mind that people call you retard?" lol)

My one gripe is that Jake just looked too young for the part. Hell, he should take advantage of looking boyish while he can, though I imagine he does want more adult roles. Hence the beard, I guess - the one on his face, I mean.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it is due to his lack of commitment or passion for political and social causes.

ITA with you, and also about the fact that RW is now the "chosen one" when it comes to good & well-publicized deeds. ;)

But even if the Freeke Show ended, I still wouldn't want Jake to become a younger version of George "Messenger of Peace" Clooney. All things considered, I guess I'm just tired of all those holier-than-thou, socially concerned and environment-friendly celebs who generally do not practice what they preach (real protectors of the environment, yeah right; doing commercials for cies with dubious social track records - Nespresso anybody? and so on).

Enough now. Have a great day everybody!

Anonymous said...

Noe Valley is also one of the gayest/most lesbian neighborhoods. One of my siblings has lived there for years and it's considered by all who *live* there to be a gay baby-boom area (lesbians with kids, gay male couples with children).

Anonymous said...

Oops, forgot a biggie - Jake and Heath taking on the roles of Jack Ennis when other actors didn't have the courage, the movie becoming a hit and a classic love story, and Jake's involvement with HRC and GLADD! They were the trailblazers for other actors. :)

Sorry to hear about no Oscar noms for Zodiac and Rendition.

My head is spinning from all of this great news about homebuying - and with the rumors of the J&R engagement having gone kaput, what else can it be but the next step for our two favorite guys???? :)

And a little late, YAY Pats and Giants, and GO PATS!!!! :)

Anonymous said...

I wonder also if maybe he's been advised, among everything else he may be wrongly advised of, that if he wants to appeal to a wider audience, to keep his political opinions quieter so as not to piss off and alienate moviegoers? Some of us like that, tho! :(

Anonymous said...

Thank you to the poster who pointed out that the gal having a fit over the engagement denial was just joking. This is what happens when I rush through comments after a day at work. Meaning gets lost or overlooked.
Interesting that Jake may buy in SF. Didn't he only recently buy in LA. Maybe he will keep both homes. Could just be a rumor too. I recall when he walked the beach in Malibu with his parents and it was reported he was buying property to build on. Nothing came of it. There were also recent rumors that he met with some restaurant owners in SF. Maybe he is fed up with HW and the lies.

Special K said...

Frenchy --

I think Jake has always been mindful of the balance of politics and Hollywood, and has negotiated those waters quite well for a guy so young. There have been a few outspoken moments that have gotten people's gander up, but for the most part he has done an excellent job.

Looking at the bigger picture we have seen less and less of the individuality he had when he started out in a lot of things. That is something that is so endearing about him from most of Hollywood, I just don't want to see that slip away completely.

Anonymous said...

If he was fed up of HW why Reese now? No, he still wants that A-list status.

Anonymous said...

I wonder also if maybe he's been advised, among everything else he may be wrongly advised of, that if he wants to appeal to a wider audience, to keep his political opinions quieter so as not to piss off and alienate moviegoers? Some of us like that, tho! :(

Oh the pain, the pain of thinking I may be part of the wider audience!!! ;D :D

Seriously, I don't mind actors telling us they support this or that cause because these guys help people or the environment or whatever. What I mind is, say, when an actor is made a great champion of the environment because he drives a hybrid or use energy-saving bulbs. The first R in the three R's of the environment stands for "Reduce". And celebs consume monstruous amounts of energy and resources and therefore produce monstruous amounts of waste. They are the last ones who should dare to brag about their eco-friendly habits. Tell us you care, don't pretend you're making a difference.

*Stepping down - this time for good - from the soapbox*

Anonymous said...

Tell us you care, don't pretend you're making a difference.

It is dissappointing when we find that they are not 100% perfect, but at least getting the message out there and trying is what's important. They are human, just like the rest of us, and I'm happy to see when the give a s**t about something, instead of just enjoying being rich and famous, with nothing better to do than party. Oh I forgot Bono's work with AIDS, and I love that Ted C. adds some serious stuff to his column at times, criticism about the Bush administration, Isaiah Washington's dumbass remarks and being supportive of Doggie rights! ;) Wow, that should be enough outta me for one day too! ;)

Anonymous said...

m, can you say more about the restaurant rumors?

Anonymous said...

^ I would say even the 30% gay population mentioned above for Noe Valley is misleading, even though it's a *huge* gay population. Remember that statistics are based on self-reporting censuses, and many same-sex couples/families (myself included) choose not to go on record for fear of future government reprisals.

I'm guessing it's closer to 50% or more. It's one of the most gay/lesbian neighborhoods I've ever been in.

So, Reese is going to move her kids up to SF, uproot them from school and friends while they are still dealing with the divorce, move from a gated, protected community to a public neighborhood, to live with Jake without benefit of marriage and Ryan is OK with this?

Don't believe that even the mother of year and the face of Avon would start shaking up for publicity.

I just posted the following on WFT:

"The only way - the only way - Jake can redeem himself for his fans is to deny Reese ("we were only friends all along; she was helping me cover for my kid"), and his bearding has to have been for a damn good, understandable reason (it was a cover intitially for his new child, until things settled down), and he has to fess up to the bearding in a major interview, and come out, and not be so self-hating and such an ass-licker for Hollywood as he's doing now.

That's the only way he can hope to regain *any* of the integrity he has lost. Personally, I would buy it if he did all the above. Will he? It remains to be seen."

Anonymous said...

Call me crazy, but somehow I don't see Jeese and kids moving to a gay neighborhood in SF. Wouldn't help those rumors one little bit.

No, I don't think you're crazy and I don't necessarily see them all moving happily together in their brand new house. Just that this piece of real estate may be the "new home in waiting" until Reese finally utters the big "yes".

Wicked said...

That report from Extra seems solely based on the UK mag's report. There's no new info. Plus, it does include the denial, like Extra Nothing said. PR trying to get the denial out there perhaps? Or maybe Extra just wanted to get some mileage out of the Jeese engagement story.

Wouldn't anyone begin to wonder about the true orientation of their boyfriend if:

a) those rumours about his biking buddy kept resurfacing;

b) he only ever wanted to take you out to Rufus sing Judy concerts; and

A girl can put up with a lot for cute looks and some panache in the kitchen, but really, even Reese must have realised the truth by now.

I'm coming late to this, but to get back to Special's post, I am concerned that Jake has kept a low profile on social justice issues lately (for whatever reason). Winterbird, be prepared to read LOTS of awful sleaze coming from the rags (hello National Enquirer and Star) now that Heath is gone. They always seem to dance on someone's grave while the body is not even cold yet.

Exactly--these cretins are more concerned about the preservation of their wonderful fake Reeke than they are in mourning the loss of a beautiful, talented man who died too young.

Enough, people are hurting and they should be allowed to talk freely. If you don't like the talk here, then go elsewhere.

Heath was amazing. Please ignore the trolls at 7:14 and 7:46, who ought to have more respect.

Thank you, Frenchy and Broadway and WInterbird and everyone else. What an awful day.

This is so very, very hard to accept. We of course don't know the actor we admire so much, but they do reach us through their work, and connect with their audience. I could not believe this at first, still can't, when I see such a young, beautiful and talented man on these news reports. How could this have happened to our beautiful Heath? My heart and thoughts go out to his family and friends, his daughter, Jake, and Michelle, his fans, and everyone else whose life was touched by Heath Ledger. Rest in Peace, Dear Sweet Heath. :* I think I will join you in chat tonight. I will never forget Heath.

Well, I hope Jake is not alone right now. As hard as this is for us I can't imagine what he is going through. Reports are also saying Michelle is flying back to New York and is totally devastated. So tragic.
