OMG Movie Club Summer Fun Edition

Summer brings summer movies. Light like popcorn, nothing heavy, or deep. Many comedy and guilty pleasures are release during the lightheartedness of summer, and what a perfect time for a comedy or guilty pleasure or maybe even a musical on the OMG Movie Club. Let's us know what would be fun to watch and share together.

Just a few movies to consider or to jumpstart your movie thinking: Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Sordid Lives, Kiss Me Guido, Rent, or maybe South Pacific will rise some attention in the musical category. And there are many more out there. Let's us know what you think.

What is that great fun movie you want to see and share?

We'll take suggestions for today and through the week, vote next Saturday, June 28th for our choice and discuss on Saturday July 19th. BYOP (Bring your own Popcorn)

Wow, any of those movies would be fun. I like the idea of watching something fun and light for summer, and discussing it. Popcorn, and maybe a nice summer cocktail? ;) Since we were talking about old movies yesterday, how about an old movie? South Pacific would be great. If you want to see a hot looking actor from an old movie, you should see Gregory Peck on black & white film in Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound. Not Summer light tho.

Hey SODA POP, me too! I was surprised that the Troll had read something as moving and iconic as "The Outsiders"! All hail to Susie Hinton!

You know,I always thought Jake and Heath had a touch of the Johnnycake and Dally about them, what say you? ;-/

Oh Hope, I can see that - there was definitely something there with Johnny and Dally. :( I absolutely loved that book, I must have read it a hunnerd times. Couldn't believe it was written by a young girl.

Have a great Saturday, all! :)

I vote for Priscilla. I thought that was a great movie. I think that there will be lots to discuss with that one.

Have a good Saturday everyone : )

What about Different For Girls as a possibility?

Hey guys, no time to comment right now, and I'm going to try to stay off the computer until midnight. Today is something called Blackout Sabbath, heard about it at a Rufus concert. The idea is to not use any electricity from noon until midnight today.

Thanks for the reminder Destiny

Oh, thanks Destiny. I'm shuttin' down right now. ;)

Special's mentioned Psycho Beach Party and Sordid Lives before both are really good summer movies.

Different for Girls sounds really interesting.

I have to second (third?) the votes for Priscilla, though.

Ellen and Portia show off Portia's engagement ring

If you're gay, don't go to Jamaica

Anonymous said...

That report from Jamaica just shows that much of the human race hasn't really come that far since 1963 :-(

Congrats, however,to Ellen and Portia - looking lovely!

Oh and "Some Enchanted Evening"! As a Brit I've never run into another "Outsiders" addict,so good to meet you! I got my original paperback copy when I was 13 and read it so often over the years that it fell to pieces but I can't part with the tattered pages. I still revisit my replacement copy even now,35 years on. It's just a pity that the guy who was such a great "Dallas Winston" in the Coppola film version went on to star in "Crash"! Oh the irony! :-(

Blackout Sabbath is not an easy option here in AZ where the temps are topping out at 115 today.

Special K said...

Yeah I have mentioned them be kind, I think they both are fun.

Psycho Beach Party Trailer

Sordid Lives Trailer

There are tons of clips of this out there I just didn't want to spoil it too much And yes that is Beth Grant from Mrs. Farmer from DD and the housekeeper from House of Usher.

Watching "Bubble Boy" on Comedy Central...friends here are amazed at his versatility as an actor, although they think the movie in itself is "asinine".

Another fun film I've recovered from my collection, "The Ritz". Starring Jack Weston, Rita Moreno, Jerry Stiller and Kaye Ballard, it's an hysterical farce based on Terrence McNally's broadway play of the same name. Treat Williams is adorable as Michael Brick, a private investigator.

"Auntie Mame" starring Rosalind Russell from 1958 is yet another classic.

I recommend both as light-hearted summer views.

Re Auntie Mame- I have a good friend who says that if he had seen Auntie Mame during the time when he was first coming out, things would have been vastly different!

E.V. tb said...

Wicked, have you seen the movie? I highly recommend it as a super-high-camp film done for its genre. Peggy Cass is hysterical!

Special K said...

Auntie Mame is so good and I agree EV that Peggy Cass is awesome as Agnes Gooch.

Throwing Gypsy into the ring too.

And another musical and can't believe no one has said it yet .. Dreamgirls.

Special K said...

Ok I can't stop now.

Xanadu

Can't Stop the Music(with Bruce Jenner)

Another, although much forgotten, but still available on Netflix, "Doing Time on Maple Drive". William McNamara as a confused college student coming to grips with his sexuality, and the family conflict that evolves. Great cast, Jim Carrey among them in one of his dramatic roles.

E.V. tb said...

Spesh, those films you mentioned are SO part of my collection! Gene Kelly in a quasi-gay production, and the Village People (wow, I traded bathing trunks with Phillipe Rose in P-town in 1979).

E.V. tb said...

That's "Felipe Rose", the Indian :)

Well summer is at least half a year away for me so I can't talk about summer movies. I'm too depressed.

Just been looking at the last thread and wanted to say that I continue to be amazed that anyone who can read still thinks bearding doesn't happen in HW. Even with all the revelations that have come with deceased HW actors.

How many of the Jake is straight crowd believe that John Travolta is straight? Exactly.
Yet he is married with kids.

If you are going to beard, you have to do it properly. If you're never seen with the person, you aren't exactly going to sell it.

This is a job for Reeke. Just like you go to work or school, then so do they. Their photo ops etc is equivalent to the office.
When Reese popped in to see Jake on the set of Nailed, it was when she was the way to an Avon gig. If she didn't have to go to that, she would never have travelled that particular weekend.
I'm sure they get paid far more than the rest of us to hang out together.
And they still can't look happy about it.

I can't see how any Jake fan would be happy about Reeke, no matter what your beliefs are. You want a guy whose passion has been completely snuffed? You want him to be with someone he has no level of chemistry with, sexual or otherwise? You want him to always be Mr Witherspoon?

Yet the Jake is straighers want him to be with someone they personally don't like or admire - all because she is believed to have boobs and a vagina.
Now that is homophobic.

Looks like Nailed got shut down for the 4th time. I wonder who and what they were filming. I wonder how much they had left to film, since the word was Jake was done filming his parts.

Nailed Shut down for 4th time

Any of those movies would be great. I'm so bad, I shouldn't have come on with Blackout Sabbath, but I couldn't help it.

Hope, I'm the The Outsiders fan - I read it about the same time as you, teenage years, and I was so struck by it, I've read it many times and have never forgotten it. Glad to see someone else who loves it and the characters. :)

I'm reading Maurice now, G*d what an amazing book. It's opening up right before my eyes, Maurice's self discovery, even more than the film, which I think is amazing. Especially the part where Clive tells Maurice he loves him, and the different analogies and metaphors for their feelings and self discovery. Amazing!

Bad news about Nailed. Bubble Boy is amazing, it wouldn't be nearly the movie it is without Jake - he's just so good in it.

Nite, all! :*

Shut down a 4th time? Didn't they say if it happened again, that would be the end of the film. I think the IHJ poster who saw Jake on the London flight said he looked sad, I'm sure he was told about it right away.

destiny said...

Such a cute picture of Ellen and Portia.

All the movie suggestions above sound good. An old musical would be a lot of fun.

That would be awful if they didn't finish Nailed when it is so close to the end, though of course on top of that are all the editing and distribution costs that they've got to come up with.

And e.v., there is no way I could do the blackout sabbath in AZ in the summer.

Clarity said...

We can't really do Blackout Sabboth here in Atlanta either. If you have pets it would certainly be cruelty to animals.

I actually own Different for Girls. It's a really good movie. I thought Priscilla was alittle better though overall - probably because of the music.

That story about Jamaica was shocking to say the least. I have a friend from Kingston that I keep up with from times to time. She keeps inviting me to come there and vacation and I always wondered why I never wanted to go. Now it makes perfect sense : /

Wicked said...

Wicked, have you seen the movie?

Of course! My friend Bill wouldn't have it any other way. He makes everyone watch Auntie Mame. It's one of his callings in life.

What? Jake got lost in London?
LOL

She was seen at the Tom Bradley International terminal as was Jerry bruckheimer, producer for Pop looking at the WENN pics.

Sounds like pre-Pop stuff with Jake arriving on Thursday.
