JFC Discussion

JFC Discussion Episode 6: His Visit Day 5

Cass wakes up to a hard drive full of video footage she has no idea what to do with,
Cissy, harps at Mitch over the phone about Tina's conspicuously-timed appearance in Imperial Beach. "Every degenerate in America jerks off to his mother's videos, and she only showed up to make money off Shaunie's being in the papers," Shaun who heard her can't take any more and, plops one of Tina's shrink-wrapped films in front of his grandmother, takes off on his skateboard. Cissy crazy with guilt, in looks for him landing at surf shop, explaining to Kai what happened and recruiting her help. Kai leaves to search for Shaun at a skate park, but not before telling Cissy he's probably upset because he didn't get to see his mother when she came to the house. "Whoever you don't drive away runs away on his own,

John explains that justice must be served to the "Vato" who stabbed him and tells Joe the police should be involved, which leads them to Bill's. John starts channeling Bill's wife, Lois, which sets Bill off. Seeing her through John he then agrees to help.

Party at the Snug with Shuffleboard, with Butchie, Barry, Dickstein and Ramon. Freddy and Palaka are battling about Palaka recently hurt wrist. Dr. Smith arrives on his bicycle, checking in with Butchie and taking Palaka for x-rays. But what's a party without Cissy, who shows up telling Butchie she wants Tina to see Shaunie. Cissy pulls into the parking lot and herds Butchie into his room. "I want Tina to see Shaun," she tells him, feeling guilty about her outburst that morning. Butchie calls Tina about meeting Shaun, a proves he needs telephone skills, and ends up bursting into tears after the call.

Joe John and Bill go to where go got stabbed, while Cissy finds her missing gun in Kai's trailer. Meanwhile John in the van, "Better she tries to kill me and fails than tries to kill herself," before abruptly passing out. Standing in front of her kitchen window with the gun in her hand, Cissy is startled to notice John standing in her backyard.

In a television infomercial voice, John asks, "Are you sitting in your kitchen on Seventh Street thinking of blowing off your head with your gun you got back from Kai's trailer?" and John pops in front of Cissy's window as Cissy breaks down.

Kai finds Shaun convinces him to come home. And Tina and Cissy talk tuna, and Shaun gets to spend time to know his mom.

Everyone drifts to the Snug and the moment John give his sermon on the mount. "The man at the wall makes a word on the wall from the circle and line. The word on the wall hears my Father. The zeroes and ones make the Word in Cass's camera."

Everyone draws around John, some more aware of him than others, Bill and Freddy make Cops and Robbers more of a band than a reality and John ends his message with, "You will not note my Father's Word, nor remember Cass's camera – but you will not forget what we did here."

Back in Joe's van, still parked by the border road, John wakes up.

Ok so what did you think? Were questions answered? Were others create? Are we finally seeing why Cisssy the way she is? What about John? What is he? Are the more clues or more confusion? What about the speech, what did it all mean?

Was this the make it episode for you? For the show? For Austin as an actor? What did you like what did not like? Favorite moments? Favorite Quotes?

Watching this episode reminds me of what we're missing with Austin on OTH. As much as I'm enjoying the eye candy, I miss seeing him get to flex his acting skills. This whole episode is just amazing in the range he shows, especially outside Cissy's window. Rattling off those words, the hand gesture, the looks. I don't think it is just any actor who could rattle off Milch's dialogue like that.

I think JFC is the best performance Austin has done in his career so far. I think Milch was the first person who gave him something to really stretch him and let him take it and go with it. It showed what he can do, and I hope gets future work that can do that again.

And to start off the fav phrases of the episode. It has to be Austin saying "whipping his skippy"

I love that line.

The thing that I think makes Austin a bit different is that most good character actors are not exactly hunks. I wonder if his looks Stand in the way of getting more roles like that.

I also like the scene in the truck with Bill and Vietnam Joe. He's different in those scene from the usual John scens, it's like he's three different people in this episode.

I also like the message with Cissy that people need to forgive themselves and not beat themselves up their entire lives for things they did wrong. Also that you need to forgive yourself for other people to be truly able to forgive you too.

Darn it all, I'm on the fly today as my Sis is moving into her new place but I just had to stop by and try and kick in my two cents...

I think John's speech to Sissy is a pivotal point but there is so much else going on here. John is making intense contact with so many of the characters in this episode. To me it seems to be a bit of an amalgam or combination of situations that give us a glimpse of his power and mission with all these lost people he's come to be with.

I'll try and get back later if I can, hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Cheers...

Special, maybe you could leave this up through the weekend, so that Seaweed can have a chance to come back?

Special K said...

Definitely will leave it open through Sunday. The day have been so gorgeous here, I have been out enjoying it.

Don't know if anyone has seen this clip of Milch talking about JFC in a USC class, Religion Media and Hollywood.

Milch on JFC

Back in a bit working on thoughts on the Sermon at the Snug.

It's interesting how John asks questions in the beginning of his speech - If I talk like you will you listen to God's message. If Bill is suspicious will he hear God. If I slept with Kai, would that make Butchie the messenger instead?

I know I was taught in public speaking to ask questions, but don't know if these is what the Prof was thinking.

I am tagging off the next part of the speech off to someone else.

Something I didn't know that Freddy and Bill played their own instruments in the episode.

I thought that it was great that Shaun finally got to spend time with his mother. Plus Austin did
amazing with the speech in front of
the window. I think this was one of the best episodes of JFC. Yes, I
do agree with you all that Austin
has improved in his acting. I am
sorry that I have posted so late but as usual things have been hectic. So hope that you will forgive me. Sometimes I do not post
because I get disgusted with the
Reeke show all the time! If that
ring was an engagement ring, it is
really a small one!! I still say if
Jake lets Austin go, I bet he will
regret it for the rest of his life!
Please take care and enjoy the week
ahead!! Fall has finally arrived
and the year has really flown by!

I forgot to ask about Wicked, the
Mrs. and all their animaly family.
Are they doing okay? Has one of
either Jake's or Reese's representatives said whether they
are really engaged? If so, it sure
is a small ring. I am surprised that it is not a much larger one!!

Kacie said...

^^ I meant animal family!! Sorry
about that!!

Hi Kacie, glad you joined us for our discussion on JFC.

John frees up people to really see themselves, the good and the bad. He's not human, yet he allows others to accept their own humanity as well as instilling in them what, a sense of spirituality perhaps?

One thing I hadn't thought about before is the way John kind of falls asleep--or probably more accurately, in some kind of trance--when he goes off to see Cissy. And yet we know he normally can't fall asleep because we see him wide awake on the floor of the hotel.

Well, I got Sis all settled into her new place and past all the visitors and neighbours dropping in. She'll need some alone time with her dog "Jake" to get settled in and to make the place her own. (Jake the Beagle is a 5yr old and is so very cute with big eyes and spoiled as hell by his Mom; he's very needy most of the time and and begs for everything.) Sound a bit familiar?... Ha.

Destiny, I have to agree with both you and Special on a couple of things; on watching him in JFC we see what we've been missing from Austin and that Milch seemed to have the confidence to let Austin stretch his acting in his portrayal of John.

Some of my favourite lines, but there are so many others too...

"Zippy told Bill we'd be over" -John to Vietnam Joe.

"Go ahead Zip, you're the big cruise director" -Bill to Zippy

This episode revealed so much and had so many great interactions. I really felt for both Sissy and Butchie as she was pained that she hurt Shaun and was playing confessor to her son while he was trying to comfort her or be helpfull and she just kept pounding away at him. Poor bastard. Then he calls Tina and starts to channel Sissy as he verbally pounds her and goes back and forth between being offensive and pleading for her to stay and see Shaun.

Actually, Butchie did a pretty good job of co-ordinating things with Kai and getting her to take Shaun back to his Gram's place to meet his Mom. It was obvious it took a lot of effort for him to accomplish this and pull it all together. I loved how firm but tender Kai is with Shauny.

When Tina finally gets to spend some alone time with Shaun it was delightfully funny to see Sissy and Butchie sneaking around to see if they can see what's going on. (How often do you realize that you are truly a product of your parents... scary isn't it?)

I loved Polaka showing off his cast in is giddy appreciation of the Doctors handiwork.

The main thing I drew from this episode was a thought that in John's collecting Cass and Link to attend his 'soliloqy'at Snug Harbour (as they seemed to be the only ones truly aware of his presence), that they were more like disciples for him.

In this episode more is revealed about Dickstein and his fiancee, the Hair Lip and the waitress, Barry and his torment. On reflection it seems that Barry has found his true HOME as I also recall his suggestion to Ramone to turn the pool into a skatepark for Shaun.

I must admit to feeling much the same as Joe when this episode drew to a close....

"Well, this was time well spent"

Special, thanks for keeping things open a little longer. Take care everyone.

"Zippy told Bill we'd be over"

Love that line too Seaweed.

Hadn't thought about Butch's sneaking around making him like his parents, you're absolutely right. And now that I think about it, the fact they can probably see some of the things they don't like about themselves in him probably adds to the tension between them.

Did you notice when Cissy made comments about Butchie he would grab the back of his neck. Like it his guilt and pain manifests physically?

I like how in the speech Cass's camera become the filter/conduit how things are changed from the reality at the moment.

destiny said...

For some reason when he grabs his neck it reminds me of the way he and Kai react when the metal in them heats up. It's almost like he's unconsciously thinking of that as well as his guilt and pain.
