My Big Fat Super Tuesday

What happens when you combine Mardi Gras and the biggest primary voting day for the Presidential campaign in the United State? My Big Fat Super Tuesday.

Mardi Gras the last hurrah celebration before the beginning of the 40 days of Lent, is celebrated all over the world, but Mardi Gras in New Orleans is synonymous with many. Parades, parties and the pursuit of beads is the agenda. Food, (beignets, perhaps?), drink (definitely some Hurricanes), and song (Jazz and Zydeco), combined and stirred into a bacchanal orgy of indulgence. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler! Yes beads are thrown to everyone, but tradition has become that those who flash get the most beads. And it's not just for the ladies. Hmmm Jake is his Jarhead dance gear shaking that moneymaker could bring home the beady bling baby. But what would the boy named after a good time libation be doing? After spending many many years in Louisiana half dressed and on the lakes, he knows exactly what to do Pinch the Tail and Suck the Head. Come on now, you know that's how you eat crawfish. ; )

But what is so Super today? 24 states in the U.S will be voting today in Presidential primaries. The theory to many in political circles is winner take all from today. The Mardi Gras approach capturing the Democrat or Republican nomination. Because after tomorrow the field will be narrow down even more, and some cases might be determined as the official "yet to be officially nominated" candidate for President of the United States. And this year is historical because for the first time either a woman or African American will be the official Democratic nominee for President of the United States.

And the guys? Jake and his family have always been politically active in helping people get out to vote and support of the Democratic party. But this year it is Austin who popped up first showing his support for Barack Obama in the Yes We Can video. Back as brunette and looking fine and very dandy. Fingers crossed that we get to see more of him out campaigning for Obama. Jake has yet to disclose who he is campaigning for, perhaps waiting for the Democratic candidate to be chosen.

You Tube: Yes We Can(Barack Obama campaign)

But it is important for anyone in the US to participate in the process of choosing our leadership. If there is a primary in your state and you are a registered voter get out and vote and participate! If you have not registered to vote, make sure that you do before the Presidential election in November. You have a opportunity to make a difference for yourself, for others, and for the world in that one name you choice. There is power in voting.

This is to respond to the last On the Rocks blog. Here is the link to the Herald Sun
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/

Go down to the bottom left of the front page, you will see stories and videos about Heath. This publication has zero insider knowledge, the people the are reporting to have attended a memorial service are only those whom they were able to catch on video, there were 1000 people at the service, there was no press, it was private, they have no idea exactly who did or did not attend.

Ann,

Give it a rest.

Fun post today, and much needed. I have very fond memories of N'awlins. Love Buckwheat Zydeco, second only to Beausoleil for me! Also, everyone, get out and vote today!

A question for all to ponder- Why do you think Austin supports Obama? What qualities does Obama have that Austin likes?

I have a suggestion. We all know that the Babbles cannot stay out of here. They WILL be here today, just like every other day. How about we ignore them we they show up?

FEED THE JAUSTY. STARVE A TROLL.

Show us your buns Jakey!

Whooohoooey!!!!!!

Great song today, Spesh!

Gotta Love Buckwheat. Nothing better than dancing with 25,000 other well "hydrated" : ) people and partying in the heat, shaking it out to some great Zydeco.

Get that backfield in motion baby!

Frenchy, Thanks for checking out Austin's "alleged" appearance on The West Wing. Too bad he wasn't in the episode. :(

To add to the madness here in NYC, we also have the parade for the Giants. I voted on the way in to work, it didn't seem that busy yet, I'm hoping that is not an early indicator of the turnout.

It's nice to see Austin pop up in that video because we can now add an interest in politics to the list of things he has in common with Jake. Now if we could just get Austin to shake his booty....

Missed a lot of comments in yesterday's thread due to popping in and out. I did some clean up. Some of you will find your comments deleted.

There,s nothing like some naked Jake to lift the mood. Thanks. Been thinking some on Ted's comments. For one, they make me sure that either he or his interns continue to monitor WFT and OMG to get the lay of the land. Jake's silence is the big topic right now. I find it hard to believe that casual Jake fans sent enough emails for Ted to bring this up. Ted can't really discuss Toothy right now - not while he is in mourning. That would be tasteless. But Ted can keep his name in the column other ways. Three mentions is a lot.

In a few days, phone companies will be releasing cell phone numbers to telemarketers. If you do not want telemarketer calls, call the FTC Do Not Call List from the cell phone that you want blocked. Phone number is 888-382-1222. I just did it and it takes less than a minute.

Why are so many sightings posted on blogs that are: a)obscure, b)just started, or c)both?

Anonymous said...

Gah, I really hope this one is not true and she's not fighting with him at a time like this. What a witch! :(

Anonymous said...

No time to comment to that very interesting post. Interesting question too Wicked, about why Austin supports Obama. Will come back tonight.

Personally I ignore any "sighting" that originates from any nobody's blogs. Some people online are just hungry for attention.

Hey Stubborn, I'm having spätzle today at the office. Is it some kind of staple in the region where you live? Mine are sautéed, with some spices and parmesan. :) :)

Anonymous said...

Personally I ignore any "sighting" that originates from any nobody's blogs.

Good policy!

Stubborn TB said...

Frenchy, they really are a staple in the region I used to live since recently.
Really funny that they're called the same in Canada. Or is it just you who calls them that?

Wicked said...

The account in that sighting reads credible but you have to wonder why so many Jake sightings are posted on blogs that have just started up.

Anonymous said...

Stubborn, my girlfriend is from the same area you used to live. She once freaked out at me (in a nice way) for trying to add salt and pepper to what was supposed to be a sweet wine sauce for spätzle.

Special K said...

And I was reminded by the niece and nephew that tonight I have to make pancakes. Why -- not only is it Super Tuesday and Mardi Gras but it is Shrove Tuesday/Pancake day.

From Wikipedia:
"Shrove Tuesday is the term used in the United Kingdom [1] and Australia[2] to refer to the day after Shrove Monday (or the more old fashioned Collop Monday) and before Ash Wednesday (the liturgical season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday). In Ireland, England and amongst Anglicans, Lutherans and possibly other Protestant denominations in Canada including Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, this day is also known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday, because it is customary to eat pancakes on this day."

I think that OMG should give up engaging trolls for Lent.

If you will all make a STRONG, and I mean STRONG, effort to NOT engage, then it's a deal. We do not like censorship, and the more you engage, the more censorship we will have to do. Let's keep it down to a minimum, shall we? :)

Anonymous said...

Stubborn, I believe the phrase used was "spitting on my heritage." :) I now know not to mess with the purity of The Spätzle.

Disloyally, however, the best Spätzle I ever had was not Badische but savoury Spätzle in Graz, Austria, fried with garlic and served with pumpkin soup, with a green dollop of pumpkin-seed oil in the middle of the soup bowl.

Stubborn TB said...

Daff, I'm assuming your girlfriend doesn't read OMG, right?

Or else, from the sounds of it, you might as well get the extra covers to sleep on the couch already ;)

Anonymous said...

She doesn't read OMG. :)

Wicked said...

This spätzle sounds like very serious stuff! Please forgive my ignorance, but what is it?

Anonymous said...

Stubborn, my friend used a recipe written in English and the word was "spaetzle". I found the word "spätzle" in an... English-French dictionary, lol. Apparently "spätzle" is considered the correct word to use in French. :)

Anonymous said...

For you Wicked:

Literally translated from German as "little sparrow", spaetzle is a dish of tiny noodles or dumplings made with flour, eggs, water or milk, salt and sometimes nutmeg. The spaetzle dough can be firm enough to be rolled and cut into slivers or soft enough to be forced through a sieve or colander with large holes. The small pieces of dough are usually boiled before being tossed with butter or added to soups or other dishes. In Germany, spaetzle is served as a side dish much like potatoes or rice, and is often accompanied by a sauce or gravy.

Anonymous said...

Good thing I'm eating lunch while reading all these posts about food. I never heard that before about pancakes Special, I've always thought of Fat Tuesday as a day to feast. And I never knew there were so many ways to eat spatzle.

And now that I've had time to digest Wicked's question, I suspect Austin likes Obama for the same reason a lot of other people like him--because he stands for change. After 8 years of a Clinton and 12 of the Bushes, I think a lot of people would prefer to not have 8 more years of another Clinton. Along the same lines, he just doesn't seem like he's part of the "establishment" and doesn't seem like someone who will not think for himself, as evidenced by the fact he was against the war from the beginning, when I think a lot of politicians were afraid of being labeled as unpatriotic.

Anonymous said...

G*d, you guys are making me hungry, I haven't had lunch yet - I love spaetlze, anything with pasta or noodles is my downfall. Not only that, I'm now craving banana pancakes, crawfish, an oyster po-boy on incredible French bread, gumbo with okra (love that stuff), and a cafe au lait and a beignet! Where am I gonna find any of that up here? ;)

I can happily give up engaging the trolls for Lent, Wicked! :)

Wicked said...

Thanks for the info, Frenchy! Sounds delicious!

Destiny, we really have had 20 years of Clinton/Bushes. 20! Damn. I agree that change is why Austin is attracted to Obama.

Personally, I would be happy with either Obama or Hillary. They are not that different ideologically. I just worry that so many people have such irrational hate towards Hillary that she is not electable. I think she would be a good president. I like Obama because he is such a breath of fresh air and does not seem part of the Washington machine.

Next week is the DC primary, and usually by the time our primary comes around, the candidates are already decided. This year, DC may actually matter. Yay! I will definitely be voting.

Anonymous said...

I think some of the hatred towards her borders on the psychotic/pathological. I don't get it. You would think the way some people go on against her she planned 9/11 with Osama.

Anonymous said...

I think Hilary could be a problem in the general election too Wicked. I've read that Republicans would like to see Hilary be the candidate because so many people don't like her and they think she'd be easier to beat.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I would be happy with either Obama or Hillary. They are not that different ideologically.

I agree, although I lean slightly more toward Obama. I vote for the candidate who most closely matches my overall ideology and party values. I'd vote for either.

The funny thing about Jeff is that he is either gay or a strong gay supporter. You should read his posts on the "Milk" page on imdb, he is very supportive of the film and of what it represents, it's about Harvey Milk and will be this years big "gay" movie. I remember reading his posts on the Jake page and thought he was a homophobe or something, then I read all his posts for "Milk" and he is very supportive.

Go figure.

But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!

I'm back from supper on the town with friends and the last results I saw on the TV over there was that Hillary was leading, but with a very small percentage.

I think a lot of distate with her stems from the fact that she supported the war in Irak. As for Austin, it seems that Obama has succeeded in drawing to the voting booth a younger usually disaffected crowd. But this is a gut feeling, I haven't checked his appeal demographic-wise.

Only had time for some off-and-on lurking today and I still have to catch up with today's posts. I noticed though that JP has been banned and I still have to find words that will properly express my complete, utter delight at this "executive" decision! :) :) :)

frenchy said...

Correction to my previous comment:

I didn't mean to say that Austin was not active nor disaffected politically but rather that Obama was a "new voice" and that younger people are probably, for the first time, totally enthusiastic about a candidate. From that perspective, Hillary appears to be the "old guard" and they are wary of her ties to Washington's PTB.

Ok enough politics for today.

Thanks for another great post Special. I hope that Mardi Gras won't prove too much for my American friends' digestive system and that tomorrow will find you up and ready just as Jake on these delicious Jarhead pics. :D

From OK! magazine:

"Jake Still Struggling With Heath's Death

Though it's been over two weeks since the unexpected, tragic death of Heath Ledger, sources close to Heath's Brokeback Mountain co-star Jake Gyllenhaal tell OK! that the actor is still struggling with the news.

"Jake's not snapping out of the shock," a friend of the actor tells OK!. "He's a pretty upbeat guy, and this is tearing him apart."

The insider adds that Jake — who is godfather to Heath and Michelle Williams' daughter Matilda — feels guilty for not being there for his friend."He really bonded with Heath and said nothing but amazing things about him as an actor and as a person. I bet he wishes he had known how bad things were... but there's only so much a person can do."
