Buddies

I miss seeing Jake with Chris. Chris seems to be such a good guy, and he's someone Jake has had in his life for a long time. I like that Jake has a regular guy for a close friend. We haven't seen Chris with Jake since they attended the U. S. Open together in September. Maybe they both got tired of people making snarky comments online whenever pictures of them together were published and decided make their get-togethers more private. I would imagine it would get wearing on you to be a close friend of a celebrity who is as hounded by paparazzi as Jake is. And Jake might have felt bad about some of the publicity and attention that Chris was getting as a result of his friendship. I hope they are still friends. I think they are, even though we have not seen them together. Here are some pics of Jake and Chris together, on both coasts, from 2007.

This Reese/lesbian stuff is no doubt PR trying to make their client seem less ordinary. Personally, I really dislike straight women using fake-lesbianism to get attention.

Orchid, just had to respond to your comment in the last thread. As an out lesbian, I despise it when straight women play with lesbianism to make themselves more interesting too. But I hate it even more when the straight male powers that be try and hype up friendship and affection between two women as something more for their own titillation. I think that's what's going on here. Maybe Reese and Christina are playing into it a bit, but I think it's really the Two-Women-Together-Are-Doing-It-Just-To-Turn-On-Guys set that is really at fault.

Wicked, it's all that, and it's also the same PTB putting Reese down because she's the producer and she's got the power, so they create a spurious gals-together scenario to make her an acceptable object again.

Wow, I just wrote a pro-Reese post :) I normally avoid discussing her :)

I'm sure Jake and Chris are still friends, and can avoid being seen when they want to (as can anyone who wants to, I believe).

Some Bob Dylan for Jake and Chris.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts.
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at,
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that.
Sweet lady.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin' south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

i miss Chris too.he and Jake were starting to look alike like an old married couple with their matching hair and beards so maybe they were getting teased about that. lol Me wonders if Chris is mia because he's working as a chef somewhere. My guess is its in Ojai, Santa Barbara, Napa, one of those places more private and harder to find than in LA or NY, but a relatively quick trip from LA. Giving reason for frequent visits that others are assuming are for something else.

2. Vanilla Cupcake

Sprinkles
Plaza at Preston Center

No less than almighty tastemaker Oprah Winfrey anointed this cupcake spot numero uno. And she’s not alone. Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba, Barbra Streisand, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Katie Holmes (who had them delivered to a New Orleans film set to share with the crew) have made these the hottest cupcakes around. Flavors include ginger lemon, banana, peanut butter chip, and the top-selling vanilla (Madagascar bourbon vanilla cake coated with vanilla frosting). The stylishly minimalist bakery is expanding to 15 more cities; if it’s not one of yours, you can mail order them or even make your own with a Sprinkles mix from Williams-Sonoma. That means there’s a Sprinkles cupcake for every man, woman and child in America.

Jake and Chris

Two kids who became life long friends. Who knew the kid in the glasses who dressed up like toothpaste was going to turn into a movie star.

This friendship is so important I can see Jake fiercely guarding this and protecting it, pulling it away from all the speculating.

And I think Chris can till beat Jake in a pick up game.

The (perceived) absence of Chris is just another very sad aspect of the recent Reeking. Looking at all these pre-Reeke photos makes me rather sad as they just seem to bring into focus what a low point Jake seems to have arrived at just now. I just hope things change soon.

(Saying that I'm pretty sure we're about to suffer another series of Reeke shot, so once again, get your sick buckets ready)

I agree with you Wicked and Special re Jake and Chris. Although based on pap videos of their pick up games Chris really doesn't seem any better than Jake, lol. ;)

But I hope and think their friendship is going strong.

For all you know, a low point is just a perception.
IMO, Jake is going strong - as usual. He has just finished a working on a film. Zodiac is generating it's own fan following. Rendition's DVD was just released. I am curious about his upcoming Moon Project.
And, I would like to believe that the man is happily munching on cupcakes with longhorn sprinkles.

^^ :) Me too, Rattler.

I do miss seeing pics of him with Chris tho. I feel better knowing that Jake has good friends outside of "the biz". Nice post today. Love the new Austin pic, but I gotta say the second one is my favorite, for The Face! ;)

When you played Gimme Shelter this week, I was thinking that if I ever had to choose one Stones song as a favorite, it would boggle my mind, there are so many. Love this one too. :)

As long as straight man is capable of understanding that lesbians do not solely exist for his titillation, I have no problem with that. I have, however, met quite a few straight guys who were unable to understand this.

ITA. Also, it's quite possible that pics with friends and family are still taken but are quietly bought so they won't find their way to the Net or the tabs, therefore disconnecting Jake from his "former life habits" as much as possible.

As long as straight man is capable of understanding that lesbians do not solely exist for his titillation, I have no problem with that. I have, however, met quite a few straight guys who were unable to understand this.

Same experience over here. Guys who are totally ok with fantasy girl-girl action yet totally put off if not downright scornful regarding RL lesbians.

Love the long coat with the scarf on the second pic but then I'm a real sucker for long coats and scarfs on guys. :)

I was reading an article recently, I think on eonline of all places, where the author discussed different reactions to gay males vs lesbians noting society is easier on lesbianism because straight men like it and hey whatever straight guys want basically rules the social code. She went on, however, to emphasize it being a condescending tolerance that reduces lesbians to being straight men's playthings. Women's sexuality is generally shown as performative and only for the pleasure of males. Very rarely is it about what she finds sexually interesting or what her fantasy is. I see this same attitude (but combined with varying elements of homophobia) in cultural representations of lesbianism, where the women are performing for the male audience, and are usually just "getting ready" for the man to come in and "finish the job". Its not really lesbianism but rather heterosexual foreplay. And the most interesting and fulfilling sexual acts are conveniently absent so that man doesn't feel the women might have all they need with each other.

The other day a radio host over here made an interesting comment about the speed at which each candidate spoke and their ability to convince their audience. Apparently, the slower you speak, the more convincing you are.

Seems that Hillary speaks at a rate of 180 words/minute - slow down girl!!!; Obama does much, much better with 100 words/minute, but Martin Luther King did even better with an impressive 90 words/minute!

Damn it you're absolutely right here. I realized that when I was referring to the "girl-girl action" in my post above I was thinking of the usual straight guy stuff, which probably has nothing to do with real lesbianism. Thanks for the clarifications Orchid.

I have had guys say, "Oooh, lesbians are hot!" in response to me mentioning my female partner in a casual conversation. One guy actually asked if he could join us sometime! I told him sorry, but we really didn't need him. Guys, please, if you have fantasies about lesbians, have enough sense to keep them to yourself.

I know that this will start rumors about Colin being gay himself. Lets hope he has gay godparents and his mom has gay friends that he can blame this on:-). Yep still mad. The the 24 hr lock down is over though.

Florida Tom said...

By the way I think it is time for Jake to grow up. He is a 27 yo not 19 like Zac. If Jake wants his fans to start thinking he is straight and wants to please his female audience stop making up bs that makes him look so foolish. Actually at this point I prefer he come out and lie. Say I am not gay.
That seems to be working for Wentworth pretty well. He can say it and then go about living a fairly normal life.

I actually believe that Jake has gone through all this nonsense since Rendition because he doesnt want to look like he was lying when people find out the truth. But at this point I prefer the lie. This ambiguous nonsense is getting ridiculous.

Back to the straight man fantasy and lesbianism. Why is it that is an accepted fact that men do this, but when women find two men together hot, they are called out at tinhats, hags, and any other name people want to call them? And it is many times from other women.

Why is this a double standard. Why after all these years of sexual equality we even continue to revert to stereotypes and we do it within our own gender?

frenchy said...

Two possible answers from the top of my head: 1) Perception of women as the ultimate guardian of virtue - if, on top of having sexual fantasies (gasp!) these fantasies feature immoral acts (homosexual) you're dealing with total perverts! 2) Fear that comes with the realization that women may actually be a little bit more like men on the sexuality front and therefore - as people like to believe - less prone to play their nurturing role as parents.

There are probably many more reasons but these are the two that I thought about when reading your comment Special.

I'd like to know what other people think.

I had a conversation about this with an ex bf of mine - his theory was that it was simple biology for a man to get turned on by two (or more) women together because a man can impregnate multiple numbers of women in one night (yeah, I lol when he said that) but it didn't make sense for him that a woman would find two men together erotic because she only needs one man to get her pregnant. He didn't have a problem with my gay men fantasies, he just didn't get it, but I have known straight men who think it's sick, perverted etc. I think it could be case of what Frenchy says, that it goes against the comon perception of women by heterosexual men. And on a personal level, they're possibly scared that if their partner is turned on by gay men it means that they see them on some level as being gay too.
I've never had any hostility from women about it, most of my female friends know I have a thing about gay men and while they don't share it, they don't have a problem with it either. The insults that get hurled around on the internet aren't because they have a problem with women fantasising about gay men, it's because it's Jake who is one of those men. If it was two random guys they wouldn't have a problem with it

Case in point: Jack and Ennis together is hot, Jake and Austin together is smearing Jakes character.

And while Jake and Jack are two completely different people, at least physically they're the same. So the hotness shouldn't just disappear.

Re Chris, I think that during that time we saw Chris and Jake everywhere together, Chris was taking time off from his normal life for personal reasons because you can not be a chef in a regular restaurant and have that much vacation time.

I thought that he was providing emotional support for Jake and that Jake had Chris on the payroll as an assistant or some such, to allow Chris time to get through whatever he was going through.

I believe he's now resumed his normal life and that's why we don't see him as much.

Jake doesn't travel to the East Coast as often as he did before cause he's needed in LA.

So I think we'll see Chris again sometime. Funnily enough, he and some of Jake's other friends (including Austin) would actually add credibility to Jeese.

Jake has such a loyal group of friends that it's weird they don't go out with him and Reese.

We are either supposed to believe that Reese has no interest in Jake's friends or that Jake's friends have no interest in Reese.
Either way, it's not a good image.

What truly boggles the mind are those BBM fans* who eagerly read fanfic, even the RPS that spins out beautiful tales of undying love and devotion - and hot sex, of course - between the movie's two male stars then turn around and banshee scream while gnashing teeth when the truth of Jake and Austin are mentioned.

Homosexuality is OK for them as long as it remains an abstract, or within the confines of a pre-set dynamic. Pull the concept out, put it into the real world, where the straight woman has no chance at capturing Jake's heart, and suddenly a line has been crossed, venturing into defamation territory.

'Tis a pity that they don't grasp the concept that this is a nasty form of homophobia, one that accepts gay men as long as they stay fictionalized, apart and separated from reality, but unacceptable as living amongst us as human beings.

Just wanted to comment on Rendition Box office in Australia.

You have to remember that movies don't make 100 million in Australia. The top movies gross about 20-25 million at the absolute most. The average movies gross up to 10 million but most movies don't even make that.

We are in the middle of summer and a lot of other activities and Rendition is a very heavy film.

Rendition is never going to be a cinema winner. It's a DVD movie. I was never going to see it at the cinema because I think of going to the cinema as an outing and I don't consider that kind of subject entertaining.

Important but not entertaining.

Most Australians would see it as an American political preachy movie and that would turn them off.

Most of Jake's young Australian fans would be turned off by the subject.

We have had a bombardment of our own political real life stuff in the past two weeks as well as a bombardment of your real life political race so a lot of people don't want to see politics on the big screen.

Fools gold is the number one flick. That should tell you what most Aussies want to see at the moment.

So long, partner

In his short life, Heath Ledger barely had time to tap his potential. But for us, he had already achieved the performance of a lifetime—and losing him so soon after Brokeback Mountain is like suffering a death in the family.

By Kyle Buchanan

From The Advocate March 11, 2008
On January 22, just minutes after we were introduced at the Sundance Film Festival, lesbian filmmaker Lesli Klainberg dashed over to me, white as a sheet. “Heath Ledger is dead,” she said.

Speaking to me later, Klainberg looks back at that moment with some confusion. “I don’t know what came over me,” she says. “You and I had just met, but as soon as I heard about Heath, my first thought was that I had to find you. Isn’t that weird?”

To me, it made perfect sense. The death of Heath Ledger meant many things to many people, but thanks to Ledger’s Oscar-nominated role as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, the loss resonated with gays and lesbians in a way that other fans may not fully understand. Not just at Sundance but across the country, we sought each other out for comfort when the news hit.

And now -- as the global audience moves past its initial shock and begins to speculate on how Ledger’s death will affect the opening weekend box office for his final completed film, The Dark Knight -- gay moviegoers are still saying goodbye. Many of us are settling in with a deeper sadness that will far outlast this movie season.

“It was clear that there was something very specific to the queer community about his fame,” says film theorist B. Ruby Rich, who witnessed a similar outpouring of grief around the actor’s death. “It’s almost as though he’d been taken up as one of ours, so his death felt very, very personal. People felt implicated in what happened to him.”

Though Ledger was straight (formerly partnered with his Brokeback costar Michelle Williams, with whom he had a daughter, Matilda), many gays took pride in him as a sort of “local boy made good,” an actor whose ascendancy served as living proof that a star could play gay and flourish. While he was not actually a gay star, the thinking went, he was the next best thing: a star whose gay role launched him on to the A-list.

“There is a sense of ownership, and people feel personally stricken,” says Rich. “His role as Ennis blazed a path into people’s hearts and souls, and his death now feels like a continuation of the movie.”

Indeed, for a population who grew up on a filmic diet of doomed gays and lesbians, Ledger’s real-life death adds an extra layer of tragedy to his character in Brokeback Mountain. The life Ennis had carved out was not a happy one, but he was, at least, a survivor. With a minimum of makeup, Ledger had taken the character into his 30s and 40s, ages the actor will now never see. The compromised triumph of Ennis Del Mar—the idea of a happy life gone unlived—grows more bittersweet when coupled with thoughts of what Ledger himself might have gone on to accomplish.

Poor humble scribe you hit the nail on the head.

It reminds me when one of the Brothers and Sisters episodes aired in America last year or the year before and there was a scene with two men kissing. There was also another scene with a heterosexual couple where it was clear that one was going down on the other in the shower.

Guess which one was complained about?

An example was a woman who was watching it with her teen daughter and said that whilst she didn't mind gay people, she and her daughter didn't need to see it on her tv screen.

Um, I'm sure your daughter didn't need to see the other sex scene either.

I completely agree with all of this, ag. It's post-nuclear Jake, I tell ya. If it were a real relationship, we'd see friends from both sides and perhaps some family from time to time. But nope, it's just Reese and her children. Confounding, unreal and mechanical. I told myself I wasn't going to waste time commenting on Reeke anymore, but your post is an important one. When the Jeesers see pics of Jake holding hands/kissing Reese in public they automatically assume hes straight and it's love. The gyllenbabbles are big slash fans but s'how think the idea of Jake seeing Austin/Chris/a guy is being 'disrespectful' to Jake just because he's been seen with Reese in those pics. But what they don't understand is that whether Jake is gay/bi or in love with Austin/another guy there's no way he can/will hold hands/kiss him in public.

never mind, I'm getting a message saying the DCF is down for updating. After an hour of trying to get in, they finally have a maintenence message? Jeeze.

I first discovered it all when I saw Maurice. I was struck by love that transcends gender. More the passion two people feel for each other than body parts, but yes, two men making love is a major turn-on. I felt the same way, if not more so, when I saw Brokeback, but these stories are just so multi-layered, that's only one small part of it.

The high def format that won the battle is called Blu-ray. Looks like a DVD but it's a new, and more expensive as of now, than regular DVDs. But Blu-ray discs will replace these low definition DVDs sooner or later. I have friends, movie collectors, they're buying their fave movies in Blu-ray format, they've been doing that for a while, so I think they are happy now (knowing that Blu-ray has won the battle and more movies will become available).

http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/080224/0366015.html

btw it lists Jake as showing up but not Reese. Why is that no surprise? I read in imdb that Reese went home from the 4 Xmas set on Friday because she was sick. BUT here's the thing: on Leno Monday she said everyone in her house had been sick (HAD been: maening over with it. EVERYONE: I would think she was including herself, right?) with the flu. On Weds she was at Penelope premier looking fine. On set Thurs, goes home on Fri. Maybe true she was sick but I'm suspicious. Don't know of what yet but it just sounds "off".

Have they gone out to an official HW event thing together as a 'couple' ?? No, don't think so. And I don't think they will, ever. Why? Because they aren't.

Btw: Can someone tell me how this party raised $6 million? Do the guests donate? Wouldn't think they have that much dough. Looks like the corporate sponsors donated gifts to the attendees, maybe some to the fund but I don't understand how the fund itself could get $6 million in one night. Maybe some of you can explain it to me. I'm stupid that way.

I don't think there is anything to suggest that Reese wasn't sick if she already had the flu earlier in the week. A lot of people get residually sick after something like that.

I've had pharyngitis 3 times this year already and I've hoping it won't come back.

However, I do believe Jake/Reese weren't going to appear at the event as a couple anyway. They seem to be avoiding making it truly official.
