Out Spotlight XI

This week, we take a look at American figure skater, Johnny Weir. For those of you who are familiar with Mr. Weir, yes, I know, he has never officially come out. But because the boy is totally queer fabulous and also my favorite male skater, I'm gonna go ahead and do a Spotlight on him!

Johnny Weir is a 3 time U. S. champion and this year's national silver medalist. He actually tied with Evan Lysacek in points but because Lysacek won the long program, Lysacek got the gold. Weir is currently ranked 9th in the world. He has finished as high as fourth at the World Champioships and placed 5th at the 2006 Olympic Games. In 2001, Weir was the World Junior Champion.

Johnny Weir is an absolutely beautiful artist. Dick Button, a skating commentator who is hypercritical of everybody, once referred to him as "liquid gold" on the ice. The unbelievable thing is, Weir did not start skating until he was 12! He was an equestrian before that and began skating in the cornfield behind his parents' house one winter.

Let me tell you what makes Johnny Weir queer. He embraces the fabulous in his life and his skating. He loves typically "female" things, such as fashion and culture. As a result, his sexuality has been questioned. Here is his answer to the question, "Johnny are you queer?"

"People talk," Weir answered. "Figure skating is thought of as a female sport, something that only girly men compete in. I don't feel the need to express my sexual being because it's not part of my sport and it's private. I can sleep with whomever I choose and it doesn't affect what I'm doing on the ice, so speculation is speculation. I like nice things, and beautiful things, so if that is the only way people are determining that I swing one way or the other, then to me, that's sad. You can't judge a book by it's cover, ever. . . . I am who I am, and I don't need to justify anything to anyone."

To me that last sentence is the definition of queer- being yourself in spite of the cultural conditions and not feeling the need to justify it.

No mention of Jake (or Reese) attending

Jake may be back on the set in NM.

Thanks Wicked for today's music. I love Bettye LaVette!

Life & Style in print said that Jake was at the 1st memorial in LA and was sobbing.

Anonymous said...

Life and Style is certainly known for its journalistic integrity, isn't it?

One of Johnny Weir's nicknames is Tinkerbelle. I must say I like that! :)

Anonymous said...

Pulitzer so what. You could say that about a lot of these publications. You either believe it or not. Doesn't mean Jake hasn't been grieving or in contact behind the scenes with Michelle and Heath's family. I know some here want to act has if Jake is not a human being but he is.

Anonymous said...

I have no doubt that Jake is grieving, no matter what current relationship he had with Heath. His heart would be a stone if he wasn't. That's not the issue. The issue is the glut of 'Jake as widow' crap that hit after, too long after IMHO, that reeks of damage control. That PR believes a few - well, not so few - tidbits of Jake's tears will somehow erase the blatant statement that Jake indeed DID make only days after Heath's death.

Jake and Reese walking kids and dogs.

That right there, the need to continue to push the Not Gay agenda, with no words even through a rep, while the BBM fandom was still prostrate with grief shrieked where Jake's priorities are. And, I'm afraid, has irrecoverably tarnished him to many.

Anonymous said...

I say there, 7 comments posted here before you get back to bashing Jake for not doing what?. Oh yeah, Jake hasn't made a statement; he has not made public his feelings about this most tragic event, so that you grief nazis can analyze every syllable.

You should be ashamed of your selves.

God have mercy on you who have none for him.
Dear God, I turn this forum over to it's higher good. Thy will not mine be done.
Amen

Anonymous said...

Give me a break, Pulitzer. The only ones shrieking about Jake's priorities are you folks here. Otherwise most have been understanding and compassionate to Jake and don't expect or demand anything from him at this time.

Do you know Jake, Pulitzer? Have you met him, spent time with him, know his friends and family? My guess is no. I am willing to admit I know nothing of Jake's personal life, his relationships or anything else. I have never met him. Unlike you I don't presume to make judgments and blanket, statements as if fact, that he is on a Not Gay agenda. You are the one with an agenda here. I could care less if he is gay, bi or straight. I love him and Austin but I think he should be left alone now to grieve.

God Bless Heath and Jake,

Ever heard of the word "opinion"?

No? Look it up.

Anonymous said...

For the 12,583,119,874th time - disagreeing with what Jake does/doesn't say/do is not bashing.

While others seem content to take whatever the tabloids throw at them, believing each and every story right down to the final period, never allowing in the idea that Jake could ever possibly make a mistake, that he walks on a cloud of perfection and is so far above those foilibles and flaws that haunt us normal mortals, I take a more circumspect view of things. I know that PR is a symbiotic business, the tabloids are a parasitic business and the film industry is in the smoke and mirrors business, none of which have seen the unadulterated truth since birth. And Jake, to use your words, God Bless 'em, is right smack in the middle of it all. And to believe that he is somehow immune and above the machinations that keep traffic on the 405 running is beyond naive.

Perhaps sticking with Popsugar and it's frothy, no substance ilk would suit your blinders firmly on taste better.

Oh, and Jack Troll, the folks over on DL didn't cower under your 'grief nazis' jibe either.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and we've heard the "You don't know Jake!" comeback 42,555,961,273 times.

Still holds absolutely no merit, since those typing it are just the other side of the same coin.

Anonymous said...

Pulitzer, don't put words in my mouth. And of course you just assume I am the Jack troll. That is so laughable. I never said I believe everything the tabloids say. I take it all with a grain of salt. I also never said Jake was perfect. He has his faults and flaws like everyone else. Unlike you who thinks they know everything about Jake I said the "you don't know Jake" because as many times as it is said you are the one who doesn't get it.

Anonymous said...

People of lesser interest in Heath's life have made statements. Jake was only one half of a pair who starred in a movie that changed their careers.

Why he couldn't have simply said, "My condolences go out to his family." makes zero sense. It seems that there was a concentrated effort on someone's part to not say anything.

I just hate the fact that some media outlets are starting to make it all about Jake. I just hope he's not gearing up for some grand statement to be aired during his Brother's promotion, "Jake Gyllenhaal finally speaks out about his grief."

That is super tacky, but I wouldn't put it past him at this point.

Anonymous said...

The Jack Troll was "God Bless Heath and Jake", and my comment was aimed at him, not you. And trust me, I have no desire to stick anything in your mouth, including words.

However, you don't seem to have that same prohibition.

Special K said...

You know life is too short -- enjoy it, spend time with your family, your friends.

I know what I will be doing today. Enjoying the time with friends cheering on the Patriots.

Anonymous said...

nauticalnaughtygirl you are sounding super tacky. Media are not making Heath's death about Jake. Where are you even getting that? Just because they mentioned the People magazine article. They also mentioned Daniel Day Lewis speech a lot, John Travolta's comments and Wes Bentley's statement and Michelle's statement and Naomi Watts at the memorial. So no I don't think anyone is making this about Jake. They are just including him in the coverage. And if he makes a statement during Brothers he is allowed to do that. I hardly think that is tacky. But I wouldn't put it past you to think so.

oh, what's this? could someone please explain what is this about? I have no access to the video stream right now. what's the behind the scenes information???

Artie Lange: I F***ed Jake Gyllenhaal's Face

When someone has nothing good to say then that someone should not speak. As of now I will no longer be posting on WFT or OMG.

I love everyone here but I cant say anything good about Jake G right now. Great job 360. You have earned your money. Of course I dont believe any of it. The only thing I wonder about anymore is how a pack of lies cannot effect a man's soul in a negative way. Especially in Jakes line of work.

Florida Tom said...

One more thing to say. I never came to WFT or OMG to be part of a fan club. I came with the hope that I would be celebrating with everyone here the courage that one individual would have in saying three easy words. "I am gay".

Anonymous said...

[italic]tackypatrol[/italic] - personal attacks, not cool. You make an argument personal and you lose every time.

[italic]marie[/italic] - The Stern show has a history with Michelle, Heath and Jake.

Artie - a notorious homophobe who I feel is a product of his environment and "trying" to change thanks to his friendship with George Takei. George is the announcer on the show and appears every couple of months. He convinced Artie to not use derogatory words for gays. When he does he has to donate money to charity.

Artie has participated in a couple of skits on the Stern show involving "Brokeback Mountain." He often throws out quips during the show when Heath/Jake are brought up where he talks about "f*cking Jake" in some sort of way. Actually one of the sound clips played during the show is him talking about f*cking Jake Gyllenhaal.

As for Stern, Heath and Michelle. Michelle was a guest on Stern years ago. Sometime two summers ago Stern and his fiancee TV Host and model Beth O were out eating. They spotted Heath and Michelle at the same place they were also having dinner. After Stern and Beth were done eating on their way out they went over to say hello to the couple thinking they'd be fine with it since Michelle was on the show. What they didn't realize was that Michelle/Heath were in the middle of some sort of argument. Stern got rebuffed as neither wanted to talk to him. On air the next day he ripped Heath /Michelle a new asshole.

Heath caught wind of this, called Stern personally off air and apologized for their behavior towards him. Since his death this incident has become a topic again on the show in reference to their breakup and Heath's death.

To her credit his co-host Robin Quivers loves Jake and whenever Artie/Stern joke about him she usually defends him. She also doesn't resort to homophobic comments about Heath/Jake.

pulitzer, I don't see anything so fucking offensive about walking your dogs with a friend. It is not like he was out partying, give me a big break. I think you are a bit out of control over you anger toward Jake.

Anonymous said...

okay, this is starting to get really tiring...

I have never heard of this ice skater...well that isn't surprising since I don't watch ice skating...I think I only really know of one gay couple on tv, and that would be Justin and Colin...they are decorators. But other then that I could really care less about people sexuality, and wheather they come out or not...it's not my life so I don't care.

I must say though that I like reading the out spotlights...they are interesting.

For those of us who are discriminated against on a daily basis, and for those who care about us, we very much care.

Anonymous said...

"For those of us who are discriminated against on a daily basis, and for those who care about us, we very much care."

Oh no no no, that is not what I meant at all. I just meant I don't think anyone should feel forced to come out or feel the need to come out because people want them too. So if I think someone is gay...say Jake for example (which actually I dunno if he is, and still don't care if he is) then I don't think that he should come out because people in this world who only know him from his movies and interviews want him to. Since it is his life he has that choice to not say. I am aware that it is important to some people, but to get so angry because someone doesn't feel that it is the right time to say it for THEM makes no sense to me. So in that scenario I don't care if they come out or not because it is not my life or my decision. Same with that whole greiving carp that ppl are complaining about.

Anonymous said...

Sorry that is supposed to say 'crap' and I'm not trying to start an argument or anything b/c everyone has their own opinions and I'll just stick to mine thanks. Anyways have a good day guys (or month depending on when I decide to come back in here)
ENJOY THE FOOTBALL! :)

Anonymous said...

I don't agree entirely, Canadian, but I hear what you're saying. There are a lot of arguments for not being invisible, and while I don't care what Jake does, I do care that he is masquerading in a fake relationship, while other people suffer homophobia in terms of wills, child child custody, immigration etc. He becomes part of the problem. I am highly disappointed in him because of this one thing. Jake could just as easily not have bearded, and he would have retained my support.

I've tried to watch the Youtube segment but it's absolutely impossible. My computer is not that slow and the UCT is strong enough but the clip is constantly interrupted. I'll try again later. Sad though that Weir sees saying he's gay as some kind of "justification".

Anonymous said...

I'm more understanding of Jake not making a statement than of the photo op with Reese and family. I can imagine Jake not speaking publicly because he was too upset and couldn't put his feelings into words, was afraid of saying the wrong thing, or didn't want to upstage Michelle. And I keep the hope alive that he may indeed be at the Perth funeral and speak there or at another tribute to Heath. Jake is a great public speaker so I can see him being asked to do this in the future. What really threw me was the photo op with Reese. This seemed calculated and for this reason I assign the blame to Reese because I imagine it was her idea. The only thing that takes the sting off this is the idea perhaps it was to combat the (I hope) false report they were out together immediately after the announcement of Heath's death having a good time and "looking relaxed and happy together". I've tried as hard as I can in the past to be tolerant of Reese but I cannot stand her now in light of her apparently using Heath's death as a way to promote herself. Perhaps I'm judging too unkindly, but that is how I feel. And yes I think Jake is dumb for going along with this and that he should get this woman out of his life asap.

Anonymous said...

Looking at the photos taken around the time of Brokeback's filming and publicity tour, it seemed like Jake had a really intense crush on Heath during filming. Take those feelings, plus the bearding, conflicting emotions about coming out and Jake just may be a total mess right now. Hence the continued silence.

frenchy said...

Reese is going to become more and more unbearable as this showmance drags on. As for the photo op, I agree that she won't miss any opportunity to promote herself.

As for Jake, it's quite possible it was "just another day at the office" for him. A way to do a repetitive and mindless job that takes your mind off more stressful feelings. He just has to get out, switch the automatic pilot on, no need to look relaxed, no need for "comfort-me-Reese" cuddling, no need for nothing. Get out, go back to work and get some fresh air at the same time.

Of course he had a crush on Heath.I bet money on that (but I don't think it was reciprocated on Heath's part-although I do think Heath liked Jake a lot as did Michelle). I always thought it was ironic that Jake's first photo op with Austin was when they went to the "Casanova" premiere together.

Anonymous said...

Great to hear everyone's thoughts and that many of us are seeing the same thing. I do think Jake loved Heath and doubt Reese is any comfort whatsoever right now. Perhaps this tragedy will help him see the light and make a graceful escape from the Reese arrangement while he can.

Everyone knows Heath loved stripes and lavender. And in that LA park photo op, Reese wears stripes and Jake wears a brand new lavender cap?? WTF?? When the fuck was the last time Reese wore stripes?? And I've never seen Jake in a purple or lavender cap before. A bit too contrived dontcha think? Shows they knew 100% they were getting photographed. And I bet Reese prolly thought that's all Jake needed to do to make a statement was to get pictured in a purple hat (which she prolly got for him) accompanied with her in stripes.

Anonymous said...

Reese prolly said to him 'Oh honey you don't have to do or say nothin. Just wearing the cap will signify your grief to everyone when they see our pictures.'

And Abbie Cornish. Woulda loved to seen that. 1000 people were there? Not the 10 to 15 intimate friends first reported.

I find that sighting VERY dubious. The poster copied and pasted the article about yesterday's service (the first one--which was smaller--was last week--this one was for Heath's Hollywood co-workers/friends and people from CAA, the agency that repped Heath) and then added in an aside she saw Jake there even though there are NO reports of Jake being at that service in the article or in any other article about yesterday's service.

Anonymous said...

Kite, there were two memorials. One very small one last weekend with Michelle, Naomi Watts, some say Jake and Heath's family. This one was just yesterday at the Sony Studio lot with reports saying a thousand people which Michelle did not attend.

reading the reports of Heath's memorial etc, its interesting that one of people who appears to be acting in a very classy and impressive manner is Abbie Cornish. she sounds like a really good person who's helping the family in a very supportive and dignified way. Looks like Ryan knew what he was doing when he got together with her, if Jake's really into girls its a pity he didn't take Heath's advice on her.

frenchy said...

Can somebody enlighten me about Abbie's position regarding the Ledger/Williams clans? Was she a close friend of Heath and Michelle? Is she related in any way? I was surprised to read about her playing such an active role during the last few days. I first saw her in "Candy" and to me she was simply that very good Australian actress who played with Heath; a work colleague, nothing more.

I had no problem accessing the clip from the link you posted Wicked, it worked just fine. It's just that the clip won't play more than a few seconds at a time before stopping, then restarting again. I have a nasty feeling that it's my new internet security software that's causing me all this trouble. I probably have some checking and finetuning to do.

Frenchy,

I remember last year when Abbie was being skewerered in the press as the "other woman" in the Reese/Ryan divorce, "Candy" had just opened and the director and Heath were defending her in the press. Heath said that Abbie was like his "little sister," which indicates to me he had formed a bond with her--but one that was more familial as opposed to romantic.

Supposedly, according to press accounts, Abbie has travelled with the Ledger family to LA, helping them in their time of grief, making arrangements, etc.

And we're supposed to think she's the slut from hell according to the rags and Reese's PR.

That is nice that Abbie flew with Heath's family to LA. Although it is interesting that the entertaiment shows and other reports had pictures and stories of Heath's family arriving in LA last Friday and there was no mention or pictures of Abbie.

And still waiting on links to the Heath setting up Jake and Abbie story. Otherwise that seems like total made up lies.

Before anyone wants to point it out to me. Yes I know the Patriots lost.

Hoarse and disgruntled-- not a happy Special K.

Odd that there is no mention of jake at the memorial in the news report link. If he was there, surely he would have been noticed being such a key factor in Heath's career. I dont know who to believe or what to think about Jake these days.

So, if not corroborated by a legitimate site and with pics it's totally made up lies?

Well, hell, there goes most of Reeke down the crapper!

Color me stunned in disbelief -

The Mighty Have Fallen! Congrats to the Giants, ya gotta love Eli Manning tho. And I want that Escalade Hybrid! ;)

Well, I watched the Super Bowl in a long while--because a NY team was in it and I always (as a New Yorker) must root for the NY teams when they get into a major championship event.

So it is with some restraint and dignity that I say:
YEAH GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see how many times Brady got clobbered??!!! YEAH ELI!!!

Okay, I'm subdued again...

I am so happy for little brother Eli!!! MVP! I loved how the crowd was chanting "Eli!" at the end of the game. And Pats fans, what was up with Belichick and the team leaving the field before the game was completely over? I thought that was classless.

I can't believe the Giants did it! I didn't think Eli had it in him. As happy as I am, I actually feel a bit bad for the Patriots (can't believe I'm saying that, they really are going to take away my NY citizenship for this).

I had to stop watching the game last few minutes. Heatbreaking that the Patriots lost. The Giants earned the win. Can't fault them for that, but it still hurts.

On another note, Sunday paper had article about James McAvoy and Penelope, which will open soon in US I guess. Opened in Britain and is getting scathing reviews. I am surprised they are even going through with releasing it at all. Did horribly with test audiences so it's been in the can a while.

I don't feel bad for Belichick, I never liked him even in his NY days. And it is nice that Eli will no longer have to live in his brother's shadow.

Awww I like Brady and I always thought Eli was a crybaby.

Oh well.

See destiny you always gotta go with the Devil's Advocate. 'Memba I was the only one here rooting for the Giants?

It's great when the underdog wins and Manning is a sweet young'un. I'm choked up and it's going to be fun in NYC tomorrow.

That's sweet, rattler *
You know what it gets like when stories and ballgames start up here :)

I know nothing about American Football (as we call it :)) but I wanted the Patriots to win for no better reason than Tom Brady's passing resemblance to the elusive AN.

Can we just accept that everyone has their own thoughts on the matter and let this whole statement thing go?

Nothing is going to change what has happened.

It's funny that the first thing we say is RIP when someone dies, yet no one is letting this man Rest In Peace. Not the media, not the fans and not the people on the internet.

And now I am going to send my RIP to Shell Kepler. You totally rocked 'the hospital' back in the day. 49 is also too young to go.

Heath Ledger And The Poem To Remember Him By

My candle burns at both ends;

It will not last the night;

But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--

It gives a lovely light.
