Out Spotlight LV

Today's Spotlight is Rodrigo Opazo Muñoz, who is named one of the best young writers in Chile.

Born in Concepción ,Chile in 1973 Munoz studied to be journalist and even though he loved his career in journalism, he found a new passion in literature. From that he has written two novels. La Trilogía de las Fiestas is a look into the lives of 3 gay men trying to understand themselves in the middle of the city and Montevusto is a fantasty story where the super hero goes to save a gay town. Currently they are only available in Spanish but hopefully will be soon translated into English.

Rodrigo is helping the Chilean LGTB community put the gay issue on the table and fight for equal rights and non discrimination in Chile, which is in face of the traditional society of Chile. He is doing this by breaking the old roles to making new ones through his literature.

His first book La Trilogía de las Fiestas, he revealed that the book is 50% autobiographical and 50% is fiction. The main characters Cristobal, Gabriel and Sebastian, reveal parts of himself as he was coming out. He used people close to him such as relatives and friends that had a leading role in my story’s creation, but mostly people that sealed the decade of his "incredible ninities".

His second book Montevusto was inspiredfrom Queer as Folk (US version) when Mike and Justin created a gay hero comic to save Gaypolis from homophobic strikes. In his book, Ramiro Hidalgo leads as the first South American gay hero who creates a legion of gays, lesbians, a trans, and a bi and a few straight heroes to save Montevusto. It is the relationship that each one has with Fine Arts is where their power comes from.

And the33-year-old journalist and novelist has had first-hand experience with homophobic violence involving the Carabineros, uniformed Chilean national police force who's mission is maintain order and create public respect for the laws of the country, he may need help from a legion of heroes.

In the wee hours of the morning, Muñoz and a male friend left a house party and, hand-in-hand and happy to be enjoying a summer’s night in each other’s company, took a comfortable stroll through downtown Santiago. The two found a bench and sat. There they talked and flirted, hugging and kissing.

About half-a-block away, a pair of Carabineros – Muñoz guessed there were two, though he couldn’t say for sure – sat in a parked police van, observing the two gay men. After a few minutes, one of the police officers rolled down his window and yelled in the direction of the bench.

“Ok guys, it’s time for you two be to moving along,” said the police officer. Muñoz was quick to question the Carabinero why he should have to leave.

“And that’s when they started to insult us,” the young writer said. “Come on, run along faggots. Get out of here. The neighbors called and they want you out of here. Degenerates, motherfuckers, queers..."

Muñoz was indignant. He walked up to the police van and confronted the officers, warning them that they’d tangled with the wrong man. “I’m a journalist,” he told them. “I know the head of police. I have contacts with President Bachelet.” At that point the police took off – rapidly, too quickly in fact for Muñoz to note their van’s license plate number.

“I’m 33 years old. The majority of friends in other words are of the 30-something generation. They stay quiet about things. Things weren’t open when we were young. So they say, ‘come on, keep it to yourself. Stay quiet,’” he said.

“But the truth is that I have a different stance. Since publishing my novel last September – I participated in the gay march as a journalist, working for the first time as a journalist for a gay institution, and being gay – I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to stay quiet about anything. Never again am I just going to shut up.’ Whatever problem I might have, I won’t stay quiet about it. Because my family knows (I’m gay), they know at my job. I’ve come out of all the closets. Being gay, one comes out of various closets.”

He wasted no time in making sure as many people as possible – including the police themselves – found out about the incident in the park. He contacted a number of homosexual rights organizations. He also marched into the First Commissary headquarters, the very police station from which the abusive officers were dispatched, and spoke with an attending official. He happened to live next door the station

“What I’m hoping from either the government or the Carabineros is a letter of apology,” he said. “That’s what I’m hoping. And not a form letter, something standardized where the public relations person inserts your name. I want a formal letter of apology.”

“I’m also going to support MOVILH in its interest in training the Carabineros. Because something good has to come out of this,” Muñoz added.

Founded some 15 years ago, MOVILH has pushed hard to carve a safe space for the country’s sexual minorities out of Chile’s rigid social structure. Over the years the movement has worked closely with government officials in pushing for legislation that protects and promotes gay rights, an effort that in 2005 won the admiration of a complimentary United Nations. MOVILH is also the first place many people who have been harassed or victimized like Muñoz turn to for help.

“The case that affected Rodrigo (Muñoz) is more common than people think,” “The majority of the people [who] come to the organization [due to harassment] don’t want to file a formal complaint for fear of drawing attention to themselves as homosexuals.”

Muñoz did receive his letter of formal apology, but that is not stopping him from speaking out for the LGTB community in Chile. He is continuing to persue opportunities for increase awareness, and fight for the rights of individuals. He also is continuing to bring a new voice and perspective in Chilean literature.

On the media in Chile:

"One of the reasons that I don’t like journalism in Chile is because the press tries the subject about Sexual Diversity with indifference. The press distorts the information and only shows homicides related to prostitution and drugs. Barely have they informed about Gay Pride and they show only drag queens and muscular strippers, but never about gay culture or gay politics or gay rights. It happens because Chilean press is under the left right politics and as we know is very conservative and besides catholic, and they try to domain over us."

Paps very often don't ask for permission to post pictures. What are you talking about? They went for a walk and the pictures were taken and then th pictures were distributed.

How do you explain the fact that these two are constantly papped at out of the way places- like pig farms? And that most of the pics of Reeke come from Flynet? When they want pap pics, Reeke call and arrange them. It's obvious.

Absolutely. I'm sure the paps in the middle of the desert just happened to be waiting to take pics of Reese when she was there. And they were waiting outside the Italian restaurant by the front window on Jake's birthday because they guessed that Reeke might go there and sit by the window for dinner that night.

Another fascinating Out Spotlight, and outstanding music today. I'd like to read these books.

I think those park pics are burned into on my mind too. I would hope that Heath's memory is more deserving than a quick walk in the park, with your so-called paramour wearing a striped shirt and kids in tow, a few photos, and then moving on to other things as quickly as possible. I hope a striped shirt isn't the best they could do.

I see we got trolled last night, what with the "Comment Deleted - This Post Has Been Removed By A Blog Administrator" message. Dang, I hate to miss one because they are always very amusing. :)

Great Spotlight. Very pretty music.

Well said, Incognito. And whose call was that, anyway, I'd like to know. To me, those pictures were the kind of shocking ones. The Rome pictures were eyeopening as far as the big splash of Reeke was concerned. But those park pictures were the first that were insensitive and not of good taste. It still boggles my mind that someone thought it was appropriate to put out the lighthouse beacon during that week to say "We're a couple; we're a family, yep, here we are". It just wasn't the time for it.

Ah, what a look back at 2008. Just kinda warms the cockles of one's heart, doesn't it? lol.

Boy, this guy Rodrigo Munoz is something else. What a sparkplug. Too bad his books are only in Spanish. He's a fighter, taking the initiative and fighting for his & others' rights.

destiny said...

What a great spotlight. I was ready to rush to Amazon to order his books, too bad they are still only in Spanish. Chile is a country I've paid more attention to than most because I actually lived there for a few years, eons ago, when I was just a kid, so I can really appreciate what he is doing. Chile really is very conservative.

Personally I hope Austin and Baby Tile spent the holidays with his parents and sister and her family while Jake went on his double-dates with another closeted actor. Holidays should be spent with people who love you for who you are and who are not ashamed to be seen with you.

btLOL, get ready for some more entertainment. I'm going to provide it for you. You're just waiting, aren't you? Glad to have you. Since my friend, Popcorn, was a total farce and made an absolute FOOL out of me, I invite you to take Popcorn's place. Let me introduce myself. I'm Prairie Girl, friend of Destiny, friend of everyone else here. I roll out the welcome mat to you. Glad to know you. Are you a Jake fan? I hope so - I am a big fan of his. Reece? Heh, not so much, but hey, if you are, I won't hold it against ya, lol.

First of all, great menorah, I forgot to say. It reminds me of a very colorful pipe organ. Where are you finding these, Special?

And m, I meant to tell you this morning that I probably would turn 20 shades of red, too. But we could just compare sharing the stories we like. We got a super duper special treat last night, In Plain Sight was posted 2, count 'em 2 new chapters. DOG, I was in 7th heaven. When she finishes it, I'll tell you. You have just got to read that one.

Oh, and I was going to issue a "We'll be seeing you sometime", m, as you get set to read Book of Dreams. lol. Guys, we won't be seeing much of m for awhile, chuckle. She's off to ReadingLand.

prairiegirl said...

Well, well, well, we have new Reeke pictures. We were due, weren't we, guys? Been a couple weeks. Can't have OMG & WFT2'ers getting too smug knowing who Jake was really with. YAWN. Same ol', same ol'. Armed with coffee cups, shopping, DumbDonald cap. But gasp! they forgot the holding hands part. You know, in real life, you don't get to do another take, guys.

Glad to see Jake once again didn't spruce up for Reece. Now he did for the birthday pictures; gotta give him that. But, lol, he just does not make the effort for her. Reece is always trying to be all fashionable and she looks like she's always walking with the shopping mall maintenance man. Attaboy, Jake. Lick the index finger and score one for Jakey.

Very nice touch, too, the shopping for men's trouser socks. He's obviously not wearing them when he's with her, tho. Hopefully he's picking them out for one special guy.

And I'd love to know who provided ol' Just Jared with these 2 couples itinerary. Did PR hand them a Microsoft Word document in triplicate while the paps were snapping their pictures, complete with arrival & departure times? Meal menus? Beverage & snack preferences? Conversation topics? Hmmm, those are about the only details we're not given. I guess they wanted to give some kind of mystery to the whole thing.

At least Atticus is getting to see his daddy. Atticus, I see you are taking priority over ol' Brutus getting to ride along. Could you do something for me? Could you give that gasguzzling SUV a good dose of German Shepherd gaseous expulsion once those doors are slammed shut with passengers secured? Just for affection's sake.

Man, I'm feeling a little snarly & sarcastic tonight, can you tell? lol. I guess I want to show off for our guest, btLOL. Sorry, guys!!

This is the first time I've been here for...I don't know how many weeks, so can you fill me in on how I was a total farce and made a fool of you? I think I was pretty upfront about my opinions and the reasons behind them, so the only way I could be a total farce is if I secretly did believe in Baby Tile and was just pretending to find the idea ridiculous.

Don't worry regular-posters-who-switch-to-a-different-ID-to-troll-me, I won't be staying long. I just thought it was a shame to see PrairieGirl feeling betrayed by someone whom she considered a sort-of friend and I thought I'd reassure her; it is the season of giving afterall :)

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about PraireGirl. The last time we spoke was maybe...I don't know, over a month ago? At that time you never said anything about having your feelings hurt, so I can't see what has happened in between now and then to change that.

Anyway, we're almost total strangers, so you have no obligation to explain yourself, but I have to admit I'm extremely curious as to how I could have "used" you when I haven't exchanged a word with you for around a month. :)

Ok, so I have wrestled the wireless access away from my niece who is giving me the stink eye because I am so mean that I wanted to get on and break up her 5 hours of time on facebook. Well we are all bit on the edge as flu has hit two of us and I am planning that the flu will strike me when I am changing planes in Dulles - but for the moment the well and ill have been keeping separate corners.

Pics - ah well I see the B is for Beard hat is back. It is kind of like a beacon in the foggy mist isn't it. And damn it Rattler all I could hear in my head was "Wish I wuz a Whisker" playing in my head.

I think the pictures protest too much - and all of it -says one thing - Jake was with his man and family - (baby t makes three) for Christmas - now what happened the day after - they could have gone to TX or they could have been all together while Daddy had to "work" you just don't know.

Wow, that's not very nice but I like you anyway. At least you call me by name. extending hand out to shake. Nice to meet you.

You know? chuckling & shaking head. If I was a fan of the Jake & Reese Corporation, I'd be delirious right now. I'd be happy. I'd be celebrating with fellow fans, chatting about the latest pictures. Glad to see them spending the 26th together. Shopping. Sharing a coffee. Out with Atticus. Got the Christmas pagaent. The birthday pics. Got Rome. Paris. Cabo. I mean, what more could a person want? Should be ecstatic & secure in the knowledge that Jake & Reese are just so blissfully happy together, heck, probably planning to get married soon. They're just one big happy family.

But no. Gotta worry about these handful of posters on this Little Blog That Could. Gotta peruse it and see what they're saying. Gotta spend time there. Because, heck, it is such a threat. Isn't it.

Hey prairiegirl, you are either blind or selective because you failed to mention RDJ and his wife!! Poor RDJ and wife, forced to leave their kids with a nanny and drive to Ojai with icky Jake and Reese and his mangy dog!!

And why would Jake dres for Reese? They went jogging on Friday and both wore jeans on Saturday and Sunday, the only thing dressey was Reese's coat, she had on Jeans and boots today.

Also he bought a power tool you left that out too, i guess he is going to build her that chicken coop!!!

And naw, I saw RDJ & his wife. But I have no interest in them whatsoever, so I'm not going to say anything about them. Why would I?

LOLLL! The power tool! I loved that little bit thrown in there, didn't you? I thought that was a great touch. You reckon it was a Craftsman? I have a brother and another friend who both say Craftsman is the only way to go.

Anonymous said...

Popcorn, don't. I'd love to believe you, but I can't.

PrairieGirl, you have to do whatever feels best for you. I'd just point out that I haven't actually asked you to believe anything; all I've done so far is to ask why you feel the way you do. I'm puzzled as to why your opinion of me could change so drastically when I haven''t done anything to you, but don't worry, it is just an idle curiosity on my part; I'm not going to feel emotionally crushed over this. :)

Special K said...

The Drill nice touch but not for Reese. More like a hint for his man - Drill baby Drill.

destiny said...

RDJ's son is 15, so a tad old for a nanny, not to mention his ex-wife has custody. He doesn't have any children with his current wife. Not sure if she is a beard or not, although gossip on FCC is that RDJ has taken to his bad ways because of the pressures of the closet.

Funny that pr thinks power tools will make Jake look straight. I guess they never watched Queer Eye or any of those other home makeover shows. A gay man who knows how to use a drill is a beard's dream come true.

prairiegirl said...

Boy, some of those comments on JustJared were way harsh. PR must just want to bite their cuticles to bits. They just can't get a clean break from that.

Why indeed would Jake dres (s) for Reese. I'm not talking about the jogging/stroll pics. I'm talking the shopping ones. Why indeed? Hmmm, well, because they're so in love. Because they want to spend every minute together. Because since they spent that intimate moment in the dressing room at Myla's, there must be alot of spark & sexual tension between them still. Because they're so in love. Oh. Did I say that already?

Funny that pr thinks power tools will make Jake look straight. I guess they never watched Queer Eye or any of those other home makeover shows.

Indeed. What in the heck is up with that mention, anyway. Powertool. Just like cluck, cluck said! Why, he's going to build that chicken coop.
LOLL!

OOooh, I like your thought, Special. Drill, baby, drill. Just kind of stirs up all kinds of thoughts, don't it? ;)
Heck, just the sound of that word does it for me. Powertool.

There's alway this argument that HW makes about their stars being out wouldn't go over in the midwest part of the US, because they never would except it. What an excuse.

Out to lunch today - (the well part of the family) at a favorite place of ours - and over at the next table was a family enjoying lunch. Proud grandparents, a totally adorable little boy and his parents. It was obvious that he was their son and they were a very happy family. And they were a lesbian couple. In the midwest out in public? Could it be?

You know what - Hollywood thinks that people would have whispered and clucked, and hissed or turned their backs to them - you know the reality - there was nothing - no whispers, or I nevers or anything like that. And the only thing people were staring out was their son who was discovering what a lemon tasted like.

So HW really needs to stop using the excuse its getting really old.

destiny said...

Sigh, not looking forward to heading back to work either. At least it is a short week.

While I think you're generally right Special, HW is always hung up on that one potential ticket buyer who would walk away because of a gay star. What is so disgusting is that HW thinks it is okay to cater to the homophobes out there, just the way HW used to cater to the racists out there by refusing to show black actors in certain roles. I'm so sick of people who think it is okay to cave to homophobes, all while using the lame excuse that it is a "cultural" issue and not a civil rights issue. And don't even get me started on Rick Warren, I'll never stop, and I really need to get some sleep now as I took a redeye back from vacation and only got a few hours of sleep last night.

Prairie Girl is right. I am late to the party since I barely slept last night. Reading. I am about 60%through the story and had to take a break, after several naps. So what do I see but the new photo op. I expect a People spread to follow. They dumped OK.

Did someone mention Jake had no friends? Problem solved. Actually Jake and RJD really are friends, so that part I believe. I visited some other sites and many noted there is more chemistry between Jake and Robert than Jake and Reese. I wonder if this was also a trial balloon to see if it is safe for Jake to be seen with a man. If so, he failed. He looks too happy in the company of men.

Atticus is looking old these days, but I am glad he got time with his daddy.

Back in the WFT1 days, I was convinced that PR had hired someone to monitor the site and say nasty, hurtful things about comments and commenters. Why was it apparent? Because their comments came within minutes and they were on the site all day. Most people have lives, jobs etc and drop in and out. Also people do not realize how recognizable their writing styles are. They can pick hundreds of names, but the tell is there.

Has been a few really hectic days with friends & relatives from overseas visiting.

I immensely admire people who have the courage to live their lives with dignity and integrity and not knuckle under.
Unfortunately Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't come to mind. I would like to call him Gyllenho from now on but don't want to offend Wicked or Sepcial K!

About the pics - 3 points
1)So PR wants to show that Reeke has friends. Isn't it just an amazing coincidence that the friend just happens to be another closet case.

2) I guess power tools are better than a Myla shopping bag, anyday!

3) PR, remind Gyllenh.. uh, Jake to hold the Chins hand the next time around.

I believe that BT exists but hope he/she does not.
I also hope Austin had a great break for Christmas in Texas with his family and some hot guy. :)

Non-Reeke kool aid drinkers loudly complained that Jake hasn't been seen with anyone but the beard for months on end, and VOILA! We get pics of the dynamical fake duo out with friends, with what could only be a PR written and provided itinerary included.

Could they be any more transparent?

Sheesh, if this is an example of what passes for career management nowadays, perhaps my dog, who isn't known for her savvy smarts, could get a job with Jake's PR firm. You know, to help out with the bills.

Anonymous said...

m, you are totally full of sh.... it is funny you think I am part of the PR team! Yeah, no one in the world could possibly disagree with you, it can only be PR trying to refute your weird ideas! And of course Jake these days lives a life which is entirely dedicated to counter the opinions on this blog! This is just way too funny.

Hi London

It is somewhat ironic that the PR approved actor friend is a drug addicted jailbird whose past antics make Jake look like a choirboy.

Oh, and who can act his way around both members of Reeke with his eyes closed and hands tied around his back.

prairiegirl said...

Good morning!

m, flf, london, ag, how wonderful to wake up and see that you all echoed what I was going to say this morning.

Exactly. What has been making the rounds ever since that birthday blowout? That no one would participate with them? Where indeed were/are all their friends?
That all we ever see is Jake with Reese.

Oila!! Here we go. Why, right here's their friends. They have friends who want to hang with them. Of course, it has to have the PR stamp of approved activities. Walking/exercising/strolling. And shopping. Out and about, in full view of the paps.
Got it! Thanks for clarifying that up for us. I think my mind is totally changed now.

lol.

prairiegirl said...

No, I believe m has hit it on the head. Isn't it funny indeed.

Funny how we get instant reactions. Yes, they're just waiting. Waiting to pounce on something.
Just like the lurking, preying trolls. Gotta peruse OMG. Hmm, alot of activity last night, m. You reckon they're either unhappy about something or something is about to come about. Perhaps they're not happy about Reeke's choice of playmates. The only ones from the guestlist who would come to their party.

Poor Atticus. What did he ever do to deserve being used as a role actor in the game called Reeke. Even Atticus is getting comments on the blogs, i.e. JustJared. He's an innocent bystander.

I wonder if this was also a trial balloon to see if it is safe for Jake to be seen with a man. If so, he failed. He looks too happy in the company of men.

Another constant comment/question answered in this photo op. Why Jake can't be seen in the company of another male, besides his dog. Why, they killed 2 birds with one stone.

This little photoshoot not getting a high grade. Not near enough background homework done. Maybe a D-.

Then off to the grandparents to see what the niece & nephew are up to. Good ol' auntie here gave a DVD box set of Pee Wee Herman to my niece because she absolutely loves that show. And my poor Mom & Dad have been seeing/listening to every single episode, lol. Let's see, last night we left off at Disc 4, with one more to go. Sorry about that, folks!!
