Crown & (Low) Country

Might have been Slow PoP but it didn't fizzle...

The Prince withing striking distance of making $300 million at the box office has been crowned the biggest video game movie of all time, pulling ahead of Tomb Raider by over 20 million to date.

So what does that mean for the newly crowned royalty? Well gamer site Kotaku put it this way:

"With DVD sales yet to add to that tally, it's surely enough to warrant a sequel, one where they'll no doubt make him a lot angrier, and we'll all look back on the first film with rose-tinted glasses and say how amazing it was."

You think the Prince will be back next time with Kung Fu grip next time?

And in a Low Country boil Austin and company's video in part with Global Green was released as well as their interview with E! News. But there was a familiar ring there.

Miss ... Miss. Just one thing. (where in the Peter Falk did that come from )

All that metal your wearing with those bracelets and the water and sun well..... the glare...I mean that could ... well it's shiny...you know very reflective...almost blinding.... good thing to see eye protection.

Ohh and one more thing Do think its a good idea to wear black in the hot humid South in June? Ohhhh it's very nice shirt that Global Green makes and it does make you stand out from the rest of the entire group, but whew... that would be a melter.

All joking aside.

There are so many people, so much wildlife, and countless communities impacted by this spill and in so many ways. Whatever way you choose to help or group you choose to support it is now when it is needed. Doesn't matter who said it or how it was conveyed.

It comes down to two words.
Please help.
That is the most important message.

Prince Of Persia Film Tops All-Time Game Flicks, Underperforms

June 22, 2010

Hollywood's latest video game-based would-be blockbuster Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has out-earned its fellow adaptations to become the the highest-grossing game movie ever -- but the movie has failed to live up to Disney's hopes of creating a new Pirates of the Caribbean-style summer blockbuster franchise.

The main failing of Sands of Time, based on the long-running Prince of Persia game series created by Jordan Mechner, has been its domestic performance to date. On an estimated production budget of $200 million, the film has seen United States box office revenues of about $81 million, according to Box Office Mojo data.

The film debuted in the number two box office slot, behind Sex and the City 2, failing to light the charts ablaze, and then quickly slid down the rankings.

Disney-owned distributor Buena Vista paired the video game license with Jerry Bruckheimer, hoping the producer could create another summer success in the vein of the unexpectedly lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Overseas, however, Sands of Time has seen box office fortunes that dwarf its domestic results, earning $213 million to date, bringing total worldwide box office to nearly $295 million. That's enough to edge out 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which brought in $275 million. (Adjusting for inflation, however, Tomb Raider earned $334 million.)

Curse of the Black Pearl, the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, exceeded $300 million in domestic box office alone, more than doubling that sum when overseas revenues were included. While that film saw roughly half its revenues in the United States and half elsewhere, Prince of Persia has so far generated nearly three quarters of revenues overseas.

Agree that they don't understand the movie business. POP is still appproximately $300 million in the hole. There will be no sequel with these numbers, and even if it managed to break even (not likely), I don't think they'd take a chance on a second one.

This movie is a flop and not a flop. He isn't pirate of carabeans but is the biggest top on game adaptation movie nontheless. I think it's clear.

PoP cost almost $600 million to make and promote (almost $300 box office intake + $300 in the hole)?

That means they spent three times as much on promoting the movie than making it?
If that was really true, then I agree: Disney shouldn't do a second one.
As a matter of fact they shouldn't be allowed to do anything that requires them to make monetary decisions.

just to add, you have to look the positive side: given People don't seem interested that much on game movie and given the lead actor isn't really well known it's not that bad!! in the game movie land POP is the one which interested people the more even if it' not enough for a sequel.

No, it cost $200 million to make, and they spent another $100 million to market it.

Theaters have to make money too, they're not working for free and they have to pay employees, rent, profits, etc, so you have to factor that in. The rule of thumb is that in the first few weeks of distribution, when a film sells the most tickets, the studio and the theaters in the US split the box office 50-50. Outside the US it is worse for the studio, and they only get 40% of the box office.

So when you consider most of the sales are overseas, that makes it even worse for Disney. Disney has actually probably only made around $150 million--so I guess that's really $150million in the hole (but they would need another $300 million in ticket sales to break even).

In that case Shrek just barely broke even - but only if there had been no marketing costs. And Iron Man 3 which was also seen as a sucess "only" made the studio $100 million profit - again if there had been no costs for promotion.

Not saying it's not true, but this would mean that studios keep on producing movies that make them virtually no profit.

But I had to get on here & just say one thing and that is that looking at so many of the comments this morning by trolls - this was a bunch of bs. I'm sorry but links with possible viruses and whatnot? Namecalling on that last one? So many of them were gibberish, made no sense, filled with numerous errors and looked like something 7 year olds would write.

That was all just ridiculous looking and ugly. Some of you trolls are lucky this isn't my blog. I'd ban every one of you and I'm not kidding. Darned if I'd let you trash up my blog like you did this morning.

That was nothing but a joke.

And now I'm going to go have a nice time with my niece & nephew because tomorrow I start my dogsitting gig for awhile.

Jake is not better known overseas. He is an American actor, swimming with the sharks in the murky waters of Hollywood. Trying to compete with the big guys. Let's be honest, the movie simply was not well received here in the United States. Making $82,144,995 after over 26.7 days in wide screen release and the market saturation enormous (at one point playing in 3,646 theaters), yet only 27.8% of the film's gross coming from domestic boxoffice, means the film is a huge disappointment for Disney and conversely for Jake. The spinmeister's are attempting to do some damage control, but there's little doubt what they are trying to sell is an odd definition of success. Especially, when the leading man has ambitions to become an A-list American actor (Not a Russian or British thespian) and when $100 million dollars was spent just to brainwash the public that this production was an epic they just had to see. I'm beginning to think that everything that swirls around Jake these days is either hyped or meant to fool the public. People do not appreciate being lied to or manipulated. He used to be a breath of fresh air, now I smell the stink of rancid revisionism, Sheesh Jake, what happened to you?

Destiny did not post the Gamasutra article - I did. And I don't wish for Jake or anyone else to fail. But facts are facts and destiny has her facts right. If it makes you feel better to ignore facts and believe PoP was a huge success for Jake, then go ahead.

Well, lots of people care. Jerry Bruckheimer cares. The executives at Disney care. And I'm sure Jake cares. You don't spend $300 million making and promoting a movie simply to deliver a big paycheck to the star or to have him "more known overseas."

destiny said...

I was responding to the article and Special's post today. Those are the only reasons I brought it up.

And if you really want Jake to succeed, then you should be hoping he does what he is good at--and not just collecting a check.

Have to agree with what PG said about the trolling today. It is one thing to allow different viewpoints, which I heartily support, another to allow all the hausfrau posts, etc. They serve no purpose and make it hard to carry on a real conversation. Not to mention all the imposter posts.

Special K said...

I hear what you are saying but what I have observed from other blogs when you do delete a troll who is just looking for you to do that, usually it creates them trolling bomb a site. And bringing things to more of standstill.

It is all about attention and taking the attention away from the conversation. I know it they are hard to ignore but all they want is attention they don't care if it is negative of positive.

Jack, ECF, The Troll to be Named Later, have been spinning round and round and acting out because they love the commotion they create and attention they get and there is definitely something that has gotten them all worked up.

Jake's dad's new movie

GRASSROOTS. True story. A short-tempered, unemployed music critic who likes to dress as a polar bear thinks he can harness the power of the people to ride the monorail to political victory in Seattle. And he's right. Almost.

It's before Twitter, before the flash mob, before Obama. It's 2001, and political unknown Grant Cogswell decides he must take down Seattle City Councilman Richard McIver. Grant has only one dream, but it's a big one: an elegant monorail gliding silently above the city's wet streets, with only a tiny footprint – "like a kids' lemonade stand!" – on the ground. He is apoplectic with rage over McIver's mass transit proposal: a ground rail train he thinks will destroy lower class neighborhoods, wreak environmental harm on the local salmon population, and destroy the city.

Grant has no campaign contributors, a tendency toward outbursts of profanity, and a snowball's chance in hell – until he lures recently fired alternative-weekly reporter Phil Campbell to run his campaign. Phil may be a political neophyte, but he has the tact that Grant lacks and a 'what- the-hell-I-haven't-got-anything-better-to-do' attitude…until he recruits an army of wild-eyed young volunteers to back their unlikely crusade, and the impossible begins to happen.

GRASSROOTS is a character-driven comedy about the power of the people and the virtues of standing up for what you believe in. Against all odds.

It's politics. But not as usual

There a video of Jake's dad at the link.

There may be no solution as you cannot predict what trolls will do, and they seem to especially hate OMG. But there is a lot less trolling at wft2, and Jackie is quick to delete anything remotely ugly, like posts calling people hausfraus or making nasty digs about say the sex lives of posters. For example, all the hausfrau comments this morning, or one left up from a few days ago referring to someone's vajayjay are the types she would delete.

Who knows if it will make a difference, but seems to me someone would get tired of writing posts that are deleted constantly. Plus this morning was already a bombing, and people did largely ignore them. Could it be any worse? Maybe, maybe not. Not sure.

PG, you make a good point about Jake being complicit in the bearding. It was Reese that pulled out so I guess he would still be at it if not for that. I do hope that he has since come to his senses though and does not intend to do it again.

I read that Jake was not feeling well last couple of days. His boyfriend parading the beard, his film being labeled a flop are likely making him depressed even if he did agree to the bearding part. But I hope its nothing serious. I wonder if the new guy in the grey shirt drove him to the Drs.

A documentary about two gay men becoming parents with a surrogate will be airing tonight (June 24, 2010, at 8:00 p.m., EST) on CNN. Here is a brief description of the broadcast:

Tony, and his partner, Gary Spino, would sound very much like any couple if it wasn't for the obstacles they face. They have spent a small fortune on lawyers and social workers and doctors trying to make their family. Their son is the product of Gary's sperm and an egg donated by a woman they met through an agency. A surrogate carried the baby. They went to court to do a second-parent adoption which makes Tony the legal second parent of Gary's biological son. Since they are two men, they cannot get married in the U.S. So they now both have a legal relationship to their son but no relationship to each other in the eyes of the federal government. This is the face of Gay in America today.

I have to say, after having read some of the disgusting website comments about tonight's special, I can appreciate, more than ever, why a couple of gay celebrity men might decide, particularly in the beginning, to go deep inside the closet (away from the public eye and intrusive media) once they had decided to start a family together. Still, it will take more courageous men like Tony and Gary to bring true and loving stories to the ignorant while also providing the healthy role models any groudbreaking social change requires. As Ted likes to say: "Remind you of anybody else?" *smile*

Awww. The digital dance. I know! In honor of our little trolly (who as Jack Twist says, "Just can't quit us"), let's go down memory lane, from October 18, 2007 to support M&M's post about tonight's CNN special and the beginning of Toothy and Goose's gaggle of goslings. Hmmm. Ted should have called the BI: "Baby Bumps in the Night," don't you think?

Bumps in the Day

Jake Gyllenhaal sure as hell lives to get the gossies in gonzo overdrive. Why, just this week, right after J.G. did Letterman, all shy 'n’ stuff, he pulls the same don’t-look-at me routine down in the Village—almost.

Desk Stealth just followed J.G. and his gorgeous amigo, a dead ringer for Austin Nichols (would just go ahead and say it was A.N. here, but, like, maybe Jakey’s pullin’ a Natalie Portman, choosing to hang with an Austin doppelgänger just to throw us snit-snoops off the mark?) for several blocks. Too fun for the ab-perf tum! D.S. embarked on an intrepid block-by-block Jake-athon, stealing close behind just for us, too kind.

“They could have walked to the ferry, and I still would have followed them,” admits our pavement detective, so refreshingly honest (see, always loved those NY types, this is only one reason why). “All the while, they kept walking close to each other, like they were purposely trying to bump into each other, ya know what I mean?”

We do, you baddie bro, we do! So, do continue:

“At one point they had their heads briefly touching each other,” D.S. practically breathlessly relayed. “A short time after that came the friend's arm around Jake and the whisper to the ear. Then, the whole block before they got to West 12th Street," said the onlooker, J.G. & A.N. did a little digital dance. "Oh so cute!”

Deliciously so! But wait. We simply have to get ahold of ourselves here. See, before you nasty naughties out there start cackling, like, totally inappropriate things here, can’t two guys show affection for each other (just like women do) without people going to all sorts of kooky conclusions? Not to mention their publicists' speed dials…

I mean, John Travolta does it all the time! What’s the biggie?

Denim Addendum: “Both had on blue jeans wrapped around perfect butts,” added our boyish spy, above, for the really important deets. Jake’s dude-pal/whatever “probably had the better butt,” sassed our unsubtle source. “It was slightly rounder, and his jeans fit a bit more snuggly.”

Sorry, Jakey, I know how it feels. I’m still smarting from the time Defamer blabbed I have no behind. So not true! I took a pic and showed the hateful folks how wrong they were, will you please now do the same for us?

We’re waiting...high-quality pics preferred!

I sure that whoever told them to join Twitter had convinced them that they would have fun with it. But you can promise that these two are all about the attention these days. Their photos ops are brilliantly staged and edited. With bffs like Danneel Harris and Jake Gyllenhaal, can you blame them? Wonder how much longer until they convince Jakey to start tweeting?"

This was accompanied by the infamous beach picture with the floating shoe. Sophia is walking ahead. Austin and Jake's shoe are side by side.
