Fraternal Paternal

Not sure how many have watched the trailer from the UK. But comparing that clip vs. the trailers that are shown in the US you can see the differences in selling the story of Brothers. One of the biggest difference is that in the UK trailer you see scenes of Sam in the war, scenes of conflict. While it is known in the story, in US that is being downplayed. Why?

Well, movies about war have been a hard sell in the US, and as Jim Sheridan says, "I think the American people just don't think there is a war on, so why should they have to go to a movie about something that doesn't exist? Their state of denial is hard to overcome,"

But Sheridan doesn't see Brothers as a war movie, but really "as a family drama about a man coming home after a long absence, and he just happens to have served in Afghanistan."

Sheridan point of view as a director is about families and relationships. He takes a bigger story, like Christy Brown in My Left Foot and focuses on the relationship between Christy and his mother's to tell it. Or telling the story of immigrating to the US, like in In America, through the relationship of a father and his daughters. The same is true for Brothers. Sheridan emphasized the family's struggle to be whole again. "It is a big thing to me to show the family at war. They are split by an event outside themselves. The war is in the family, you know."

A lot of focus in US campaign has been on Grace (Natalie) and Sam and Tommy. But the story that really emerges is more about fathers than brothers. Hank's (Sam Shepard)relationships with each of his sons. Sam's fatherly relationship with Tommy. His relationship with his girls and how that changes from forces out of everyone's control. Tommy find paternal feelings he never thought he had and stepping in as a father and how that changes his life.

Those relationships create so many themes, of expectations, disappointments, rebellion, anger, resentment, abandonment, love, acceptance, and redemption. It is a story as old as man in a setting while modern is itself timeless.

One critic talked about Jake effortless playing a father. Looking at the place in Jake's life you can see how it dovetailed from real to reel. No doubt Sheridan encouraged Jake to bring all of that into his role, relishing as Jake discovered fatherhood on all levels.

Something you might not know about Brothers. Brothers is a pretty little movie that has a powerful punch. The movie had a budget of only $25 million, with the actors talking "a quarter or maybe even a 10th of what they usually get paid," according to Sheridan.

Hi guys,

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, those who observe.

I was checking our old recipe archive for a recipe I remember Special K talking about from last year - a chocolate silk pie, or a bourbon pie, or a chocolate bourbon pie? If you could give me the recipe I would love it - I wanted to make a wow dessert for Christmas visiting. It sounded so delicious.

Thanks! :) You can send it via email if you like, or post here?

Thanks again and Happy Holidays - the posts are still fantastic. :*

Here is the recipe.

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie

This is a pecan pie with bourbon, pecans, and chocolate chips. A delicious bourbon pecan pie recipe.
Ingredients:

* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 4 tablespoons melted butter
* 3 eggs, slightly beaten
* 3/4 cup light corn syrup
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 2 tablespoons Kentucky Bourbon (I've used Wild Turkey and Jim Beam before)
* 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
* 1/2 cup chopped pecans
* 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell

Preparation:
In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter. Add eggs, corn syrup, salt, bourbon, and vanilla. Mix on low speed of mixer until blended. Spread pecans and chocolate chips in bottom of the prepared pie shell. Pour filling over nuts and chocolate chips. Bake in preheated 375° oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until set.

We still have our recipes from last year in is own link on the right to the right up the daily post under OMG Cooking Klatch Recipes.

Would people like to do another round of recipes for the holidays this year? Let me know what you think.

Wow, thanks! Sounds as delish as ever. And you know I'm gonna use Wild Turkey. ;)

Thanks a million - :* Really looking forward to Brothers.

NY Daily News agrees that bearding with Witherspoon is about PoP:

If Hollywood needed help seeing Gyllenhaal as the kind of actor who could carry an action franchise, dating one of the world's most bankable stars didn't hurt.

charybdis said...

Gawker.com had fun with the NY Daily News story:

The Daily News didn't have any good gossip items today, so instead they ran two pages about how Jake Gyllenhaal is a "jack of all trades" or something. They go very out of their way to assure us that him and Reese are definitely dating, and that his two new movies—the melodrama with Natalie Portman about whatever with Tobey Maguire, and Prince of Persia, where he gets to dress in clothing Tom Cruise only dreams about wearing in public—are very different. Sometimes, I just want to knock over the Daily News gossip page. Nothing else, just "knock over."

regarding the NYDN article:

my fave part was how Reese finally confirmed their romance and dished on how happy they were in Vanity Fair: he's very supportive. i'm very happy in life right now.

OMG... i'm bowled over by the romance of it all. i guess they just didn't see the need to mention the In STyle magazine where she gushes even more, saying, "he likes to cook. he does it a lot."

bestill my racing heart.

I tried posting earlier but lost it when you put up a new post Special. Ugh! Usually I save them.

I was going to say that I think the absence of Reeke during Brothers may be in part due to the fact it is all about PoP, and here we have the NYDN sort of confirming that. I bet Sheridan is no fan of Reese, same with Zwick, so they don't want her and the paps around for their movies.

Also, a lot of the pap photos we got of Reeke, the real purpose was to run in US. With poor sales and a new publisher, I think US is probably trying to run what they think will raise sales and take things in a new direction.

Regarding Adam, more thoughts. He was on last at the AMAs, and here in NYC it was almost 11, so hardly the children's hour. It may also be why he felt the need to do something over the top to close the show.

But I agree PG that it seems like a lot of this is just part of pop/dance music. I'm sorry Adam is not leaning more towards the rock side in all respects. But I also recognize that rock just doesn't sell that well anymore, even U2's latest has only sold about 1 million copies world-wide, and it's even worse for less-established acts.

One comment I saw somewhere mentioned a Miley Cyrus bit in a movie or show with her on a stripper pole on top of an ice cream truck, and we know that is geared towards kids, so when you think about that, and the fact Adam's performance was late at night.....

Special K said...

I think something that Jake was drawn to about Sheridan and Brothers is that his mother writes from a similar perspective as Sheridan directs. About families and their relationships. Look at Running on Empty, Losing Isaiah or Bee Season.

That NYDN story on Jake is one of the biggest steaming piles of crap I have read in a long time.

The writer was either lazy or was not given the chance to do a real interview with Jake. Looks like they took a press release and ran it with very little editing.

That really seals the deal for me. I have no interest in seeing Brothers.

Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman elevate beyond their normal roles playing against type to where they can almost melt away. The only problem here is the persona vision of these stars even though they try to keep out of the tabloids unlike some other actors.

Jake is quite vindicated here in terms of his acting potential. He shows a depth missing from “Jarhead” and a vulnerableness that was present at times in “Donnie Darko” but perhaps, in many ways, not seen since then. His physical transformation no doubt due to “Prince Of Persia” informs his thoughts here. He is in much rougher form and yet that certain fragile element still comes through but without being forced. As a result, his pain is the most revealing and the most heartbreaking of all because despite his intent, he still can’t win.

THE INSIDE REEL

sienna said...

Destiny... i agree: that nydn thing was just a PR bio/resume. it was a bunch of nothing but pushing how great and amazing jake is without giving any real new info. it's part of the biz, i guess, but with a little bit of effort it could've been a much better piece, imo. however, i guess they really don't want us to know much about the REAL jake, just the Public Persona Jake. oh well. too bad for us, i guess. :(

What the writer of the article didn't realize was that Jake filmed Brothers 8 months before Jake was even announced as doing PoP.

i was wondering about that line you just quoted.

His physical transformation no doubt due to “Prince Of Persia” informs his thoughts here. He is in much rougher form and yet that certain fragile element still comes through but without being forced.

first of all, i didn't really get it? wtf is he saying? and secondly, i also thought that POP was long after bros. he was filming bros when Heath died. POP came much later.

JT... i'm back to being 'on the fence' about seeing bros. i watched a couple of his older movies the other night and really enjoyed them, but this one is almost guaranteed not to make me happy, and i guess i just want to take a stand for myself and not see it. i let myself really get a little bit stupid about him for a while, and that's something i still carry some ick about, so not seeing this movie might be a good move for me. :)

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, that was the point I was trying to make too Sienna. That the writer clearly didn't realize Jake made Brothers 8 months before they even announced him being in PoP.

sienna said...

yes, spesh, you were clear. i was just agreeing - i was pretty sure he had the timeline wrong. i guess i also didn't really get what he was saying about jake in general: that building himself up for POP (which he hadn't done yet) somehow enhanced his role in bros?

folks were mentioning the other day how jake often talks in gyllenbabble, and i've really noticed that this time around. soemtimes it seems like he just throws a lot of words out there and hopes the interviewer will make some sense of it and move on. that's kinda the impression i got from the nydn article: a lot of pretty words, but not a lot of substance.

Back on apartment soil again.

And the apartment is still trashed, if not more so! lol

I'll have to read that NYD thing, I suppose. So is it going to make me gag, I take it?

I must get laundry started, get my Halloween lights taken down & eat something. I'm starved. Cannot wait to get my new Christmas sheets from Penneys on my bed.

Hey Old Tyme!!! I love that spelling. It reminds me of old times. lol. So are you sharing any of that pie???? hmmmm????

Let us know how it turns out, ok?
I got some fantastic recipes from my sister in law this time around. My brother taught me how to scan them, put them on a little flash drive & then transfer to my laptop. I said, "So that's what those little flash drives can do." I always wondered what was so great about them. Now I know.

I think I'm starting to get Brothers'd out. The movie hasn't even come out yet and I'm burned out, lol. It does look good, though, except I hate sad movies and I don't like war movies.

Jake does sensitive roles extremely well. I don't know what is wrong with playing a sensitive man. Why does everyone think we all want James Bond or Steven Seagal?
Or that being someone like that is the epitome of manhood? I will never get that.

prairiegirl said...

Why they thought Jake had to bulk up like a Rock Em Sock Em Robot in order to play a prince is beyond me. Talk about a stereotype.

In HW's image, I guess, Bulk + Baritone = Man.

Baritone!!!! That's what my nephew plays. LOL, not that anyone cares. But I couldn't think of the name earlier.

That NY article was such a cut and paste job, no wonder Gawker made fun of it. Actually, it sounds like a PR person wrote it and said here, publish this.

Thanks for asking PG, I've had a couple of pretty bad days and could not sleep at all as I could barely breathe, but feel much better today. I hate getting sick over a holiday. I did not even get to call in sick.

Interesting that Jake did not get paid his full salary for Brothers as that was reportedly the case with Rendition as well. Cant imagine a big salary for Nailed either. So where is the money coming from except from POP?

I'm in the camp that the absence of Reeke is so that Jake does not have to answer any bearding questions face to face. Once Brothers promo is over, which will be 12/5, look for Reeking to go full throttle in a last ditch effort to straighten Jake's image before May 2010. What they don't realize is that the pairing is so off, it just breeds criticism and more jokes at their expense. One does wonder why they don't abandon that plan, but I think they have gone to far to turn around now. It's too late to pull out a new pretend girlfriend.

As an actor "Tobey likes to control a lot. That is the way he lives. He has a cook that cooks for him. His world is very controlled. Even when acting, he is not the kind of guy who would get loose. He's quiet and pensive and thinking about things."

By contrast, Gyllenhaal is a "free-wheeling actor. He is always looking around. He has three or four things going through his head, and normal stars just have one."

SF Gate

Think that some of the random comments and rambling are because Jake does have so many things going through his head at the same time. I know how that is I speak and write from experience LOL

You're the one obsessed with Reeke Tom. You want to Reeke to happen, because it gives you something to bitch about. Every two weeks you beat that horse worse than the Babblers. Why don't you go to the Brothers and wear a shirt in protest and then you can bitch about something for real like Jake's performance. Too afraid you might like it?

Tom, I have to say that it has been nice to be Reeke-free these past several weeks.

Til you have to bring it up!!!!

lol. Come on....it's like free publicity for them. Frankly, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. No, I'm not past it all so don't get me started.

But let's not bring them up, for gosh sakes. I'm feeling pretty decent from the holiday and all. I don't need to be freaking on them - that is their heartache, not mine.

I just had a nice, bittersweet holiday with my family. I'm having a nice time right now listening to my music and putting away my fall things, getting ready for Christmas stuff. I really don't need to be reading stuff about you know who. I really don't.

For gosh sakes, let's enjoy each other and the other things going on in our lives. There's so much to be happy & thankful for. At least that is how I feel; can't speak for anyone else, I guess. I have a bad habit of that and so I have been told cyberly. And it's true.

But anyway, that's how I feel as gently & fondly as I can say it.

prairiegirl said...

I almost forgot something. I am all for a holiday recipe kietcheke thing! I have some new ones to share! lol, they won't necessarily be my own. But they were goooood! So that makes them worth sharing.

You know what we could do, too? One day, in the midst of our regular comments, we could mention favorite versions of holiday music, if one is inclined to that. Like right now, I'm listening to all kinds of stuff intermixed with my regular library.

MercyMe has a fantastic Christmas cd. Their version of "Christmas Time" is awesome, a little jazzy. It's highly recommended.

And Dido's "Christmas Day". Has anyone heard her sing that? That is one of the most beautiful songs. Someone here likes Dido, who is it?

Anyway, there's another idea we could do one day. I'd love to hear favorites of other people because if there's one thing I can't get enough of, it's different versions of Christmas songs. One can handle just so much of Mitch Miller & the Gang and Ray Conniff, you know?

Although "Christmas Bride" by the Ray Conniff Singers is a wonderful song and also highly recommended!

Here's a great one.

"Everybody Knows The Claus" by Hanson.

http://s0.ilike.com/play#Hanson:Everybody+Knows+The+Claus:1412891:s161766.17319.1830028.1.1.28%2Cstd_c2500d67d0d4462d1805d67c614f2657

Copy & paste that puppy and jam away!! This song is funny and it jams. It's about Santa and how he likes to eat so get out of his way when he's baking.

"Don't forget the donuts!!"

lol. I guess that only plays a snippet. But you get a great picture of the boys, especially Taylor. I always liked Taylor - he's hot.

That song rocks.

You know, I always say that young guys write the best music. Look at all the best jammin' music and it is written by male artists (sorry, ladies, but I have to give it to the men on this one) in their led by their testosterone collars years. Prince. Rolling Stones. Eddie Money. Bruce Springsteen. You name it. It's when they are in their young years that we get the best jammin', kickass kind of music.

Sorry for the language but that's the only way I can think of to get across my point.

Sorry to be so chatty, too. It's what happens when you're deprived.

I swear, everytime I was trying to blog, someone came to sit down at the table!! What is the deal? And then my brother is getting on my laptop like he doesn't have a kazillion desktops & laptops (including my old one!!) downstairs in his office to get on.

And then he's on my computer showing me how to use a flash drive and I'm saving it and there's the name of my story!!!!

And then he's bookmarking something and I'm sure he sees my bookmarks like "Post Brokeback Slash" and "Waiting for Toothy 2" and who knows what all else!!!! AAAAAARHGHH!
For cryin' out loud!!! A person has no privacy in my family.

And then my aunt comes over. "What're you lookin' at on there?" Can you say minimize?!!!

My brother asked "Where do you want to save your recipes? You can save them to whatever you want. Pictures...."

And I don't dare open my pictures because there's my picture of Captain Jack & Ianto kissing & sucking face at the press conference!!!!

"Uhhh..I'll just save it to my desktop."

Gee whizzzz! I was freaking out down there, LOLLL!

And hence I am thankful I have locked my story. It's locked up, locked up. Precisely why. lol

I have to agree with blue bird here. Tom, you need to take a couple steps away from the computer or at least find something productive to channel your hate into. Studies have shown that harboring so much resentment and hate is actually not good for a person's health.

This is a long post so it's in two parts:

Part 1 of S's post

I didn't see all the deleted Tom posts, so i can't really speak to what is going on, but i have seen several folks addressing Tom about some of the things he's said in what i feel is a rather unfriendly way, and i would like to take a small stand for tom.

Jake G. is a lot of things to all of us:
he's an actor, a celebrity, a good-looking guy, a guy that comes across as nice/friendly/sweet in his interviews, thereby turning him into someone we almost feel like we know as opposed to some distant and more unapproachable star. He doesn’t seem conceited or high and mighty; he doesn’t have a Better than You attitude. For many of us, he represented the face of the new gay actor - we hoped and truly believed that he was about to come out and change the way gay actors were received/perceived by HW and the world.

Instead, he chose to go in the exact opposite direction in such a way that really seemed a slap in the face to many of us by hooking up with the most unlikely and unbelievable of female partners. It's not as if he and R even worked on Rend together and therefore actually had the opportunity to fall in love. It’s a extremely poorly manufactured romance that has gathered no steam over the 2+ years it’s been cooking.

Now, for most of us, we can develop easily enough a ‘take it or leave it/wait and see’ kinda attitude towards all this, and that's by far the healthiest thing to do. I had the misfortune to be unable to do that, and was totally, hatefully obsessed with Reeke for over a year. It was a miserable time for me, as I’m sure this is a miserable time for Tom.

It sucks caring about people that don't care about you, who are important to you with no hope of you ever being important to them, and who will never care how you feel about their life. That is the downside of letting yourself go beyond casual interest in a celebrity.

Tom and I did it for the same reason: because Jake became more to us than just a movie star whose work we enjoyed, or a celeb we liked as an individual for his off-screen personality or interests. He became an ideal to us.

sienna said...

Part 2 of S's Post.

For me, he became an ideal guy to write about, the perfect gay character who met all my criteria for the guy i'd want to be with IF I WAS A GAY MAN!! (Stretch of the imagination there for sure, but wtfe!!)

I think, for Tom, Jake was almost a Jesus-type figure, the guy who was going to single-handedly change the way the world perceived and treated gay men. As a gay man himself, that must be one of Tom’s greatest hopes, to be seen as just a guy, and not a special-needs dude or a freak.

Imagine how Peter and Paul would've felt if Jesus has suddenly thrown up his hands after the last supper and said, "To hell with all this. Me and Mary are gonna go back to jerusalem and shack up. My dad said he could put me to work at his carpentry shop. I'm outta here. Ya’ll are on your own."

That's an extreme example, but when you put all your hopes in one person, which tom (sorry, speaking for him and i probably shouldn't) and i did, it makes it devastatingly hard to just say, "Oh, okay, do what you want, that's fine," when things go the opposite way of what you were expecting. Especially when you feel like it's all a giant lie.
If we could truly look at them together and say, "Well, i don't see what he sees in her, but it's obvious they've got it going on," even that would make it easier, but we can't, and we aren't the only ones. Therefore, it's not fair to say that we just aren't seeing it because we don't want to. There are plenty of non-OMG folks who comment on those pics all over the internet declaring the fauxmance. If we are wrong, we are part of a huge crowd of jake-watchers who misread him.

I hope that - for Tom's sake - he can find it in himself to get some distance from this, because the only person he's hurting with his feelings is himself. I had to force myself to do it and now i look back on the whole time with a lot of embarrassment. I don't like putting people on a pedestal. I don't like adoring someone who wouldn't give me the time of day if they met me in a coffee shop. Therefore, taking a step back from being so invested in his life has allowed me to get a better handle on my emotions. I'm still not a fan of reeke by any means, but it doesn't inflame me either. I can live with how i feel now, and the one good thing about HW romances: if you don't like one, just wait - it will be over sooner or later.

Big hugs all around, especially to Tom. S!

prairiegirl said...

Good news about Franco and SNL. I've been recording Gen Hospital and watching Franco. Cant say I find it that exciting, but I admire his willingness to take risk. I have not seen any evidence of a hospital or even a Dr on Gen Hospital so far, but like OTH, I am a novice to the plot. J Gordon Levitt did a good job, but SNL is most surely on it's last legs.

I agree with most of your analysis. I do believe that some of the commenters advice for Tom was valid. They may have been brash and in your face, but sometimes most of us don't want to hear what can help us or what the real problem is... Others looking from the outside "sometimes" can see better, and this can hurt peoples feelings. Some of us know about Tough Love, some don't and won't listen to it.

Tom, if the thought of Jake and Reese really gets you upset, I agree, maybe it's time to pull back from them. I did. Although it was not because of Jake and Reese dating or the so-called fauxmance, hell I'm gonna tell you, I think he goes both ways and the possibility and probability of them being together or not is equal in my eyes. My backing away was because it did not feel healthy and too much time was spent on Jake's life when I felt my time should be spent on something more productive for ME and MY life. He's a human beign first and foremost. Next he's an actor who may be gay, straight or bi, and he could be bearding or Not. Where does this leave me and what's in it for me? Really nothing. So I for the most part concentrate on his movies and his craft. In the back of my head knowing that it would be good if he were gay, and better if he came out "if he is gay", but I don't NEED for this to happen. Hang in there Tom. I did not read your comments before they were deleted.

One troubled teen impressed Jake Gyllenhaal so much as he was researching his ex-convict character in new film Brothers, the actor won him a part in the movie.

Gyllenhaal, who plays a grown up juvenile delinquent in the film, spent time with convicted drug smugglers and murderers in an effort to determine what life behind bars for a teenager is like – and he admits the experience has changed his life forever. He met with 18 year olds who are serving life sentences and others who have since been freed and are trying to get their lives in order. One such teen, Victor, made such an impact on Gyllenhaal and director Jim Sheridan, they cast him in the film. The actor explains, “This kid Victor was in jail and he was released and had the opportunity to change his life and told us stories that were unreal to me.”He was hiding meth in the back of a lamp of a four wheel vehicle driving over the border and he was 16. He changed his life and is working for the governor’s office in Sacramento now.”Jim (Sheridan) ended up putting him in the movie in a scene where my brother Tobey Maguire’s helicopter goes down.”In the film, Maguire and Gyllenhaal play feuding siblings.

LOL, sienna, on your computer comment. I can just imagine.

Hey, I have to tell you guys about a picture over on spooky's journal that is indeed worthy of a squee or some other kind of outrageous reaction.

And that is a picture of Austin on a big ol' wooden swing with a big ol' sultry look on his face.

And it's not a picture that can be reposted so I'm not sure if it's for Friends Only or not, I can't remember if it's a locked post.

But if you can see it, you have got to go see that one. Naughty Boy, Austin!!!! And I had to scold her for posting that on a Sunday morning, LOL!

Oh oh. I just had a thought. What if I'm the only one who sees this picture as very naughty? lol.

Hey, he's fully clothed, I might add. Maybe I just have a wild imagination.

Good morning to everyone! Last day of holiday vacay and I'm already having the big D. This holiday went fast.

Beautiful sweet Reese and Jakey are clearly happy and in love, at least for now, and since the twisted little twerps who hate them can’t join in, they spit hate at them. Hey twisted little twats: your vile hate doesn’t even get near to them; you miss by millions of miles; you’re never going to be part of their lives so save your pent up bitterness for someone else...

Sorry trolls,

we know that you're reading and posting on JiG blogs because you too do NOT believe Reeke "romance" is real.

It’s fun to see how the haters hate her because she is with Jake and successful and they are not, and blue-ring boy isn't either. It must hurt a lot to know she is super rich super famous and a big name in Hollywood if you are a little nobody living nowhere with no money and nothing going for you. Right "Silly trolls"??

It’s fun to see rich Hollywod actress selling the fauxmance and cheap Avon perfumes.

Hi PG,

I'm going to experiment with the chocolate pecan pie recipe first and if it turns out well, I'm going to bring it for dessert at Christmas dinner. I'll let you all know how it turns out! :)

Just catchin' up on some of the posts, and Spesh, you sure weren't lyin' when you said Austin is the best remedy - I loved the vids and that he and Sophia et al went to visit and show appreciation to our servicemen. I love his voice, and his lanky frame draped over Brooke's couch. If it isn't Jake who's got him (and who knows what's really going on) he's gonna make someone very happy. :)

It is odd that we haven't seen much in the way of Jake and Reese for some time. Whether it's real or not, I wonder if they want to keep it in the background so as not to affect Jake's movies. He is a star in his own right.

Hey Old Tyme! Yikes, I can hardly type right now because I just came in from walking and it is freezing outside! I didn't take any gloves because it said 41 degrees earlier but man, that wind is out of the north and my fingers are frozen, lol. Geesh.

OT, I like your phrase of Julian's lanky frame "draped" over Brooke's couch. That is hot.

Happy Thanksgiving trolly.
