Today's Out Spotlight is Project 10, the nation’s first school-based support program for gay and lesbian students, taking the organization’s name from the 10% of the population estimated by the Kinsey surveys to be gay or lesbian.
Project 10 is a Los Angeles Unified School District onsite support program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. Founded by Dr.Virginia Uribe in 1984 it came from her research for her Ph.D were she concluded there were issues that LGBT youth in schools face as well their unmet needs as out . It came from her research for her Ph.D. in psychology. A survey of the 10 largest school districts in the United States revealed a startling lack of support services for this target population.Not long after, she noted that an openly gay student at Fairfax High School named Chris had dropped out after he was continually harassed by fellow students. Further investigation showed that Chris had been kicked out of his home at age 14 after telling his parents he was gay. Fairfax was the fourth high school he had left after sexual harassment proved too much for him.
It wasn't until October 1999 California Governor Gray Davis signed AB 537, which added sexual orientation to the list of protected categories in the California Education code. Now, along with victims of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, and religion, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students have a procedure for filing complaints of discrimination based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. For 15 years Project 10 was there for LGBTQ youth in California until California caught up to them.
Project 10's mission is to ensure safe, supportive and welcoming campuses free from discrimination and harassment for sexual minority youth. Its services include on-campus support groups that are safe zones for LGBT students, services to help district personnel implement policies affecting LGBT students, and support for school district staff who address the needs of at-risk youth.
They focus on dropout and suicide prevention, substance abuse education, student empowerment, reduction of verbal and physical abuse, and accurate HIV/AIDS information. Project 10 is made up of seven elements: A district resource center and program adviser; Workshops to train administrators, counselors, teachers, and other staff members on the issues of institutional prejudice and the special needs of LGBT youth; Development of onsite student support groups led by trained facilitators; Assistance to school librarians in developing fiction and nonfiction materials on LGBT subjects; Assist schools to be in compliance with nondiscrimination policies, Title IX sexual harassment provisions, and the Equal Access Act regarding the formation of Gay-Straight Alliances; Advocacy for LGBT student rights through task forces, parent groups, and community outreach programs; and Networking with community agencies, parents, educational organizations, and teacher unions.
Project 10 provides workshops, and events throughout the year for the LGBTQ youth in the LA School District. One event is Models of Pride. The 17th annual Models of Pride Conference was just held on October 17th. The one day conference is free and open to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) youth, and allies, ages 14 to 23.
It was created in 1993 as a means of providing a safe and positive environment where LGBTQ youth could network with each other and expose themselves to new ideas and information. The conference is day long gathering of workshops, entertainment, a resource fair, food, networking opportunities, live music, and a dance party finale.This year 35 different workshops for students to choose.
Project 10 also sponsors the Models of Excellence scholarships. Which are given annually for LGBTQ youth and allies who are currently graduating from a Southern California senior high school (private, public, or parochial). Another activity Project 10 sponsors is a LGBTQ Youth prom for kids 14-23 in the LA area.

What a great thing this Project 10 is and what an awesome thing Dr. Uribe is doing. You know, adolescence is a hard enough thing as it is for everyone let alone dealing with a sexual awakening. I cannot, cannot imagine. How alone some of these kids must feel and to think of all those before this time who, no way would they have had any kind of support network like this. I wish there was something like this in all schools. Maybe California just has alot bigger schools or something.

Gentleman, you bring up a point I've been thinking about. For starters, I'm wondering what to make of that remark from Austin about him having chemistry with Sophia both on and off screen. I do think it is a dig at Reeke. Now I'm also wondering if it isn't Austin also thinking he's going to out there and beard and do it right, as though that is a great thing to aspire to. Pathetic.
Still don't know what he thinks he's going to gain from it. Looks to me like more and more young actors are refusing to play that game even if they don't come out, especially those who work on television.
You don't see the other actors on OTH running around like this, hell, I have no idea whether Lafferty is gay, straight, married, has a girlfriend, single, etc. Buckles isn't doing it either. So while initially this may have been to create some buzz for the show, I don't think that is the case.
I especially love reading about people and organizations that help gay teens. While things are so much better for them than it used to be, there are still so many issues.
And of course one of the things they have to deal with is the heterosexual norm that dominates the culture. That is just one more reason why what Austin is doing is wrong.
Boy, there are so many nasty things going through my head that I could say about Austin right now, but I'm going put the computer down and go back out to enjoy the warm weather, grab some wings and beer at my favorite neighborhood bar with outside seating.
PG, the leaves here in NYC are kind of dull this year, or at least so far. Mostly turning brown or a dull yellow. A lot of trees are still green too, so maybe the right ones just haven't turned yet. Even looking across the Hudson River from the park, usually the Pallisades Park across the way is a riot of color, and this year it is not.
I'm puzzled, too, Destiny. But you know what, too? Special brought this point up before. Maybe Austin is at the same time as promoting for OTH, taking some of the pressure off of Jake. What if Jake really was doing kind of badly there for awhile?
I know that some of his family is located in NY but some of this Sophin is coming around the time and on the heels of Jake spending alot of time with family. Maybe Jake was having a rough time and was reaching out? His family was reaching out to him and giving some TLC? Seems kind of unlikely and will probably be said just before a really good Reekfest, but just throwing it out there for now.
Second of all, I need to say excuse me since I am a midwesterner and us Midwesterners are polite. So if I stink up the place, I will give an "excuse me"!

Jake Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in sci-fi thriller "Source Code" for Vendome Pictures and The Mark Gordon Co. Duncan Jones will direct and Mark Gordon will produce with Vendome’s CEO Philippe Rousselet and Jordan Wynn. Production is slated to begin during the first quarter.
Summit Entertainment will distribute the film in the U.S. Summit International is also handling the international sales, which began at the American Film Market with over 15 territories licensed.
"Source Code" centers on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.
Project had originally been set up at Universal in early 2007 when the studio bought Ben Ripley's screenplay and attached Topher Grace to star. Uni tapped Shane Abbess to helm last year. Current script includes revises by Billy Ray ("State of Play").
Rousselot noted that "Source Code" will launch the Vendome slate, adding he believes it will appeal to a world-wide audience and exemplifies the types of producers and filmmakers with whom Vendome plans to work. He and co-CEO Fabrice Gianfermi plan to produce a minimum of a dozen films over the next five years.

I really loved Duncan's movie The Moon. There would have been a time when I would have been thrilled with this news, because I am sure it will be an interesting film, but since I don't plan on seeing any of Jake's films in the near future ....
I feel bad about judging Jakes and Austins acting abilities. I am far from an expert when it comes to that. I just feel so bad thinking that they are two gay men living a lie to further their careers in Hollywood. Shame on them and shame on HW. But like Destiny I cant support Jakes career in anyway till the bearding stops. Ditto for Austin.

Excited about Source Code. Read the first 20 pages or so of the script. Really really good. The premise, the role, another one that will stretch Jake. Potential for another cult classic. Like that Jake continues to look for different roles and not getting boxed into same kind of role over and over again.

Tom, regarding your comments about J&A's acting, the way I look at it is that J&A and their people must not have much confidence in their acting or who they are. They seem to think the only way to sell themselves or get ahead is on the arm of a more famous woman. So I wouldn't feel to bad about your comment, you're only reacting to the message we're getting with the bearding.
And in Jake's case in particular the loss of confidence since bearding stares us right in the face almost every time we see pictures of him. But how long until we see that with Austin? As PG pointed out, not everyone loves Austin, and we're seeing the re-surfacing of the "user" comments he used to get when he was seen with Jake.

PG, thanks for the tip-off re Tainted Evidence. I mentioned before that I am rereading Best Friends Forever. I forgot how long that story is. I just finished chapter 54 and am on the down hill swing. I get obsessive when I am rereading - cant put the story down so it is cutting into my time for anything else. But I will make time for TE, especially since it is the end of the story. I also stopped for Tenderfoot. I may have to reread Tainted Evidence soon since it was started so long ago.
Not sure why, but I am not as bummed out about Austin at this point. I think there may be a bit of revenge or even poking fun going on. That is he is copying Jake's actions to poke fun at him. Also I still see two old friends, coworkers spending time together and letting people come to their own conclusions, right or wrong.

Trolls, rather surprisingly, dispute this, claiming that it's a game or joke; this merely confirms the diagnosis; how sad do you have to be to find such mind-numbingly trivial timewasting to be funny?
Remember that trolls are cowards; they'll usually post just enough to get an argument going, then sit back and count the responses (Yes, that's what they do!).
i hear u smiley. lets face it though the babblers or trolls may be correct. but i certainly hear homophophic remarks from real fan. i sure dont think what we want to believe about j and a are sick. not at all. i still believe j and a were romantically involved. 100 per cent. just not sure what is going on now.
i sure dont see j an a as two guys who hoar around. the women who they are supposingly with make ya think they r the type of women who would do what they have to do for their careers. if sophia is bearding for a though than it makes u wonder why she would do such a homophobic thing when she is supposed to be gay friendly and why after years of being friends with j and a why would she suddenly hook up with a. maybe to save oth or because he asked her to do him a favor. with reese i think she is just a head case who is afraid of being irrelevant in hw and that is why she hooked up with jake. I dont see anymore june carter moments for her. she is no meryl streep. nut maybe they are both couples. i am not sure. that is just where i am right now not sure.

What Is A Troll?

Now I will say this. I was having my usual big J&A Current Relationship doubts when I happened to think about Reese travelling to the Pitt City to see ol' Jakey boy.
Interesting that she would fly there. Of course, it makes her look desperate.
But it also makes me see that since Austin was on the west coast, Jake was to remain at homebase. And obviously, since Atticus & whoever else could be considered part of this offbeat unit is with Jake, that wherever it is that he's staying is the homebase. Apparently gone are the days when these 2 are leaping at any chance to get papped, a strong opposite MO from their past trail of behavior.
Someone has changed the MO. For whatever reason. I believe Destiny has theoried about this on here before.
Tom, I wonder if you don't have some kind of a muscle strain? That's how my bicep strain started out. It came out of nowhere and in the matter of about 1/2 a day, I could no longer even raise my arm without excruciating pain.

Don't need to be irritating the olfactory sensors of my colleagues. Just Sayin, do you have any good recommendations on strongly scented body washes? Does Febreze make one? That Febreze will kick out just about anything. I bought one of their new Christmas scents for our bathroom at work. LOLLLL! I can't believe I just shared that. SNICKER!!

I think the JIS crowd is getting worried that Reeke may be winding down. They seem incapable of imaging anything that is not supported by pap photos.
The interns at E must be onto something big, and CAA have got wind of it. I think that's the reason for all the bashing.
ONTD, have you read any of the comments about Ackles, and if so, what is the reaction. I can't believe there are that many comments.
I think some of the comments are coming from the regular assortment of people who insist they know JIS, even though I think they really do think JIG. Sadly I think there are also a few TBers who post under different names for the purpose of attacking other TBers for being too negative.
But M I think you're right about some or all of what happened today being tied to CAA. There is someone who has posted here, under various names over the years, who I have always suspected has ties to and/or works for CAA or pr. I've recognized the same writing style and turn of phrases over the years. And as Wicked used to say, OMG is always being monitored by CAA and pr.
They've taken different approaches over the years. I think that for awhile they even pretended to be a TB believer, in the hopes I think of befriending some of us here/finding out if we knew anything that was not being discussed publicly. It's no secret that some of us have met each other and communicate/chat directly. But I think when that tactic failed they resorted to the nastiest of behavior, attacking individual posters, taking over the board on occassion to make it look like the people on OMG are turning against each other and that the place is falling apart.
They are determined to take down this blog, one way or another.
Too bad for them we're not going to let that happen.
