Out Spotlight

It is Memorial Day weekend this weekend here in the US, and it is when we stop and remember those who served, fought and died for their country.

Unfortunately those who have served in the US Military have never been able to serve out and proud, but that is not to say that many of the LGBT have not served their country proudly.

Today's Out Spotlight is about two such men, who served and found a much more. Today's Out Spotlight is Jack Reavley and Bob Claunch, US Army.

"A half century ago an Army sergeant started going out with his commanding officer.

The two men came out by confronting the troops in their unit.

They've been together ever since..." - Bob and Jack's 52 Year Adventure.

In 1951, Lt.Jack Reavley and Army Sgt.Bob Claunch both were stationed in Munich during the Korean War. It was that same year that the U.S. military had declared homosexuality as an "unacceptable risk" and dishonorably discharged approximately 2,000 men and women from all branches of the armed services.

It was also the same year Bob and his commanding officer, Jack fell in love.

Jack had served World War II had remained in the Army Reserve, was called back to duty during the Korean War. He was Bob's commanding officer at Armed Forces Radio in Munich, Germany.

It was love at first sight, Bob said.

They may have found love, but it wasn't easy for the pair to be in love. "They couldn't be seen alone together without raising eyebrows or risking the scrutiny of military police." And then there was the matter that Jack had a wife and two young daughters back in Texas. Both were weighed down with guilt.

After keeping their relationship quiet for close to a year, others in the unit began to notice their relationship and rumors grew. If they were found out it meant the possibility of being court-martialed. Instead of denying it to the troops in the unit they confronted them about it.

Lt.Reavley called a meeting. He had his secretary, Olga, a lesbian who had helped conceal their romance, pretend to phone AFR headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany.

"I said, if anybody has anything to say about Sgt. Claunch and Lt. Reavley's association . . . now's your chance," Jack said. No one said a word.

"We didn't admit guilt, and we didn't say we weren't. So case closed. And the rumors stopped."

Soon after Jack and Bob finished their hitch and returned to the US with honorable discharges.

Jack chose not to head home to Texas, but joined Bob in his native Los Angeles. They came out to Bob's mother and sister and told them they were going to be together. His family did not approve. And that was the easier of the two family situations.

It was harder when it came to Jack's family. Jack went back to his family in Texas to explain things while Bob waited for him in New Orleans.

Still to this day, emotional about what he did, Jack said, "Morally, it wasn't the right thing for me to do, to leave her. She was such a sweet girl -- I hated to hurt her."

After several months in Texas, Jack wrote a letter to his wife when she was out of town. By the time she came home, he was gone.

"That was the only way to do it. A clean break and for me to get the heck out of there, and out of the way so she could go on with her life."

His wife went on to remarry and Jack had a relationship with both of his daughters for many many years. It was only until a son-in law asked about Jack's inheritance (and that it would left to Bob if Bob survived him), that has caused a rift in the relationships.

Jack and Bob jumped all over the US following radio jobs. Eventually, settling in Raymond, Washington, where they purchased KAPA-AM., They next 27 years broadcasting music, sports and local news.

Retiring and moving back to LA they came into a second career in film and television. For the twenty years, they were extras in "General Hospital," "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "Pretty Woman."

In 2006, Stu Maddux produced the documentary "Bob and Jack's 52-Year Adventure," about their life long romance.

For most of their lives, marriage was not an option. But when same-sex marriage became legal in California they considered tying the knot, and announced on NPR they would, but reconsidered.

"I know that we've been together a long time," Claunch said, "but the idea of cementing this relationship seems unnecessary."

"I suppose it's because for so many, many, many years and centuries, men have not married men, and women have not married women," Claunch said. "We've been brought up not having anything like that, not wanting anything like that. . . . We've always been given the impression that it was a horrible kind of situation, and it is not easy to cross over that line."

They are registered domestic partners in California, but even getting married would not allow them federal marriage benefits including Social Security and survivor benefits that other couples are granted.

But they are reconsidering marriage if opportunity happens again, "If the opportunity to marry comes again, they said they probably would take advantage of it -- and hope that federal marriage benefits would someday follow."

After more than 58 years years together, they now live in Triangle Square, a 104-unit complex in Hollywood of mostly low income LGBT seniors. They have also become advocates for gay senior adults.

We recognize those individuals who served in silence and those who spoke up to bring change to the opinions of the armed services and the citizens of the United States that all can serve no matter be race, creed, gender, or orientation. And especially for those who sacrificed their lives for freedom for ALL.

"When Americans remember and honor those who gave their lives fighting it never occurs to them that some of the strongest, bravest, and most heroic were a
It is time for us, as a community, to remedy that.”
– Leonard Matlovich

(CNN) -- More than 30 people were arrested Saturday in central Moscow during the sixth attempt by gay rights groups to hold a parade in the city.

According to the group, Gay Russia, far right groups clashed with activists who were gathered in front of the Kremlin wall and city hall.

A total of 18 gay activists and 14 anti-gay activists were arrested, according to Moscow City police.

A police spokesman told CNN that the group did not have permission to gather publically for a parade.

Three prominent gay rights activists, Americans Dan Choi and Andy Thayer, and France's Louis-George Tin, were among those detained.

"We have been asking for the last six years to gather. We are being deprived of a very simple right that is taken for granted in democratic countries," Nikolai Alexeyev, Head of Gay Russia, chief organizer of the Moscow Gay Pride Parade told CNN.

Alexeyev said as soon as activists took out their banners and flags, dozens of members of an ultra-Orthodox group attacked the activists.

Gay rights flags and banners that read 'Russia is not Iran' were displayed in the crowd.

Last week the city denied the group a parade permit due to "a number of complaints", Moscow's deputy mayor, Luydmila Shevtsova said, according to reports from national new agency Ria Novosti.

Representatives of religious groups, ultra-nationalists and the Moscow City Parent Committee had filed complaints against the parade.

This past October, the European Court of Human Rights fined Russia for banning gay parades in the capital.

Great Out Spotlight, Special. I enjoyed that one and also Nat King Cole.

Now if you would only stop participating in lies which also make things difficult for gay kids. Your relationship with Austin is saying Gay is not ok.

It is unbelievable to me that she had the nerve to go on about this while she is bearding. It's not like she's a civilian trying to help a friend.

It's not even like she's helping Austin by just going to a few HW events with him.

They're doing the whole enchilada, a mini-Reeke complete with Austin Moves In! She pimps the relationship, she lies her head off about it, and has gone out of her way to promote it.

Not only that, she makes sure she outshines Austin, makes it sound like he has pursued her and chased her across the country refusing to take no for an answer, has failed to mention him as an equal when interviewed about global issues or their Gasoline cd, and when they've been on JustJared, the post is always focused on her. So the bearding relationship is all about and for her benefit.

I would love to hear an explanation from her about how that entire business transaction is about LGBT rights and fighting for equal treatment. She's helping to set the progress back by 20 years.

But alas, I'm just wasting wind, I guess.

Hey, this is pretty cool! Donny and Marie Osmond are both on Twitter!

Boy, Nat King Cole had a great voice, didn't he?

Oh oh, time is slipping away!! Only about 48 more hrs left in my trip and it will be a return to the Midwest.

Today I saw Folsum Prison from a distance of course. Pretty cool!

You always have to wonder well Austin tweets something out of the blue.

And even more when it's a quote from Dylan McKay on 90210.

Jake's the one with the double phones but is Austin the one with the double speak this weekend?

The videos of Jack and Bob are the trailer for the documentary and from a Q&A after a screening. It is quite a remarkable love story.

Shhhhh. PG is sleeping. And, not just for five minutes, but for the past few hours. Looks like I finally wore her out. LOL!

Not surprisingly, we are having an excellent time. What a treat to have PG come visit and allow me to be the first to introduce her to the many wonders of Cali. For me, she is exactly what you would think from reading her insightful, honest and passionate blogger commentary. A person with a keen curiosity and enthusiasm for life. Who cares deeply about the world and has a romantic and whimsical sensibility. Not surprisingly, she is easy to laughter and has a heart that is caring and kind. What a treat to be able to call her my friend.

And the real m was incredibly gracious, attentive to our comfort and just a heck of a lot of fun. A fantastic chef and a consummate tour guide. Our brunch was delicious and the company was engaging throughout. What a kick to spend our Saturday exchanging a variety of thoughts about the guys and sharing mostly the joy (with a few lingering frustrations thrown in for good measure) since each of us have followed Jake and Austin's careers for so many years. Never mind having the opportunity to celebrate the film that continues to bring people together of like minds and hearts, Brokeback Mountain.

It was also enjoyable to watch Austin "display" his many talents and find a good use for that remote control's pause feature. He indeed has many hidden talents and charms. Oh, and his performance was pretty darn good too. ;-)

What an amazing story for the Spotlight today. Haven't had a chance to check out all the videos, but I intend to when I get time.

Can't see that Austin has burned any bridges, so looks like he's taking a page out of Soapy's book and tweeting and talking about things that have nothing to do with his own character.

LOLLL!! A 3-hr tour! I mean nap! Dangit!

I thought I was just lying down for an hour but now the sun is stinkin' gone and I've been robbed! Grrrrr! That makes me mad.

Boy, is the ol' body clock going to be jacked up. I don't know how Jake & Austin do it flying all over the place all the time. It takes probably a good 48 hrs, don't you think? to adapt to a big time change, even from Central Time to Pacific Time? Can't imagine Pacific Time to Eastern Time. Yikes.

Aww, M&M is too nice. I can't say enough about her and m & her husband for their incredible Golden State welcome and hospitality. It has been a blast and I'll be forever in their debt for the great time I've had.

M&M has certainly taxi'd me around everywhere here! Love all the trees everywhere and the mountains. The laughs have been countless and last night, we had such a wonderful time with m. I can't say enough about what a warm and generous welcome and visit we had. m, I just had the best time - will always remember yesterday.

Again, it bears saying that the risk of extending oneself on the internet, while I've been burned a few times, has far been worth those few scorches when I've made such incredible lifelong friends and/or visited the likes of Wicked & her family, Tom, Special, Destiny, Seaweed, real m, M&M, Roma and Clarity.

All because of OMG and Special. All because of Jake & Austin. Just think, guys, all this never would've happened. We never would have met had it not been for this blog and those 2 guys.

For all the aggravation & yeah, some heartache, wow, what a blessing it has been for all of us to have gotten to know each other and made these bonding friendships. For the negatives of the trolls, the bearding and some of the crap that's been upsetting, those 2 guys have done an incredible thing by inspiring this community. There has to be something big about who they are and what they have together that has continued to develop what WE now have.

It's a miraculous thing and it has been and continues to be totally, totally worth it.

Looking forward to a Memorial Day cookout tomorrow! M&M was busy in the kitchen earlier tonight making potato salad & deviled eggs. Tomorrow will be world famous M&M hamburgers!!!

M&M and I were talking today wondering if Jake is an outdoor barbeque-ing kind of guy. Can't do sushi on the grill, I guess. Would he actually be able to sacrifice and cook the fam an actual hamburger or hot dog on the grill?

Is BT going to be deprived of a hot dog w/ French's Mustard in a bun and a potato chip, an American rite of a Memorial Day holiday???? This could be criminal!!! Will BT ever be able to taste a hot dog?

That is an intriguing, hugely contemplative question.

Okay, I've been told that there's an outside change should the dog be a Hebrew National Hot Dog,

Get a load of this Tanya from Yale (how convenient is her location given Peter and Jake's recent visit for graduation). Now, Jake's PR or some stupid fangirl who can't stand the real Jake, are planting comments over at JJ about how they know that Jake is dating a civilian and that he really prefers Brooklyn. These guys are truly relentless and nauseating in their campaign to heterosexualize Jakeypoo. My favorite touch were these two sentences:

My niece is not an actress Pickles, that’s why he is interested in her. She just graduated and will be working in Brooklyn in her chosen field hopefully!

prairiegirl said...

I'm sorry but this is kinda funny. That Tighty Whitey Jake pic is going around again on Twitter via Tumblr. It was just re-posted today on someone's Tumblr and they already have 33 comments by people who likely had not seen it before.

Jake's people are sooooo dumb. They make a big threat to sue, they don't follow through with it because if they did, all it would do is bring up questions to Jake that they can't afford to have publicized.

So now that some people are seeing that no action is being taken, they're going to get brave and start putting it back up again like this person is doing.

Look at this comment:

wittymoniker reblogged this from *uckyeahgracejones and added:

Apparently his lawyers have been sending out letters to have sites take the photo down. Makes me think it’s real.

10:33, I'm glad you put that up. It goes to show you how PR can either themselves plant or have comments planted in order to push their agenda. Get a load of this "exchange" by "Joe Blo" commenters on the "Bulging Biceps" pics on JJ. What. A. Crock.

And actually, looking at the first "comment" from Tonya, there are two traits in it that remind me of a troll we know.

Tanya fro Yale @ 05/30/2011 at 9:06 am

He dated my niece when he was in NY the last time. He’s nice cute,, polite and has a sense of humor but looks older than 30, especially with the buzz cut. Tried really hard to impress my Aunt and Uncle , which they were, LOL!!

That’s so random! Is your niece an actress?

I think Jake’s gorgeous, but he needs to lose the red wifebeater.

He sure is serious about his workouts. Seems like he is always exercising.

Pathetic about the JJ comment, whoever it is from. Hope it's not pr, but wouldn't surprise me.

Who says "that's so random"? As if insinuating that comment just came from out of the sky. geez.

My niece is not an actress Pickles, that’s why he is interested in her. She just graduated and will be working in Brooklyn in her chosen field hopefully! I hate men in wife beaters, makes them look tacky. He seems to always look grumpy in the pics from L.A., he hates it there but has to be there, contacts and all. He hasn’t looked grumpy like that when he is in NY, the paps leave him alone and they are rarely in Brooklyn.

Here's a gagger:

Missy @ 05/30/2011 at 10:15 am

Thumb up Thumb down +2

@Tanya from Yale: How did the two meet and are they still dating?

I like the buzz cut AND the beard. Jake’s always hot, no matter what he wears or how much (facial) hair he grows. :D

Talk about a set up. Give me a break.

Someone is trying a little too hard here. Exactly, how convenient to use Jake's sighting at Yale to set this up.

But also could be setting up for Jake to permanently move to east coast???

prairiegirl said...

^^^ Dest, this is the kind of crap I was talking about that we have to put up with!! LOL

And I'm sorry but the Hangover 2 with ol' Latrine as far as I can see was all about putting Jake out there on the holiday weekend, with his go-to horndog bud seeing a horndog film.

Now don't get me wrong, I loved Hangover and I can't wait to see Hangover 2 but what has tipped me over toward this being an opportunistic "sighting" is the tweet of Jake & Latrine being seen at the concession stand.

They BOTH need to go to the concession stand together? Under those blinding bright lights that they have at those concession stands? The concession stand before or during a big movie like Hangover 2 is going to be your busiest place besides the bathrooms after the movie. Plus, Jake doesn't strike me as a buttery popcorn/Coke kind of guy. Hey, I know! Do they sell Rice Krispie treats at California theatre concessions?

You're not going to have paps at the movies but they know that today you're going to have someone with a cellphone who is going to tweet about it.

Talk about drawing attention to yourself. Going to the concession stand.

That's what did it for me.

Special K said...

There was a comment on JJ that Adam and Jake were with a group of buddies to see Hangover 2.

It always reminds me of what Tab Hunter said that when he went out they went out in a group. Makes me think that Austin was in that group.

And if they went to the Arclight there is a very addictive caramel corn that they make fresh there, that sounds right up Austin's alley. Wonder if Jake was scooping up the treats while Austin saved the seats.

prairiegirl said...

I'm sorry for yet another comment but this stuff needs to be pointed out in order to show the loopholes in stupidass comments like Tonya from Yale on Just Jared.

#1, if Tonya from Yale is the aunt, why does she call herself from Yale? If it's her niece who is dating Jake, then how likely old is Tonya? And so is she a graduate student? A 30 some year old professional student?

#2, if Tonya is the name of her niece, why would she put her niece's name up in public like that?

#3, if the niece is a student from Yale who just graduated, how on earth did Jake meet her? And when? At the graduation ceremony?

#4 Did she meet Jake at a bar over one of his short trips to NYC? How far is Yale from Brooklyn/Chelsea Market? And does a student from Yale who has a lot of finals/studying to deal with have this much time to spend in NYC with Jake in order to establish this sort of relationship that Tonya from Yale is insinuating?

#5 And they had to have hooked up several times for Jake to meet her parents.

#6 And why would this be the first time we've heard about this? All these tweets of Jake at Chelsea Market, NYC and Brooklyn and never a mention of him being seen regularly with a girl, other than this "mystery brunette"? And that was just once and it happened this last trip, the Yale trip.

#7 And as M&M just pointed out, if Jake has been with this niece, what about the 3-woman weekend? The 90210 gal? What about the hot model at the bowling alley? Olivia Wilde? What about all of these women? They've been making Jake out to be a player ever since the ol' Tay break up. Is Tonya from Yale trying to sell us that he's been exclusively seeing this civilian because he likes the privacy of such a relationship? Then why would Jake be seen dating/hitting on these other women?
What about the niece's parents? What are they going to think now???

Oh,yes and by all means we have #8, I take it that Jake must have felt instantly comfortable with this niece?

LOLLLLL!!!

Here's the Brawny Man's butch bitch competition and Photoshop hater Jake Gyllenhaal struttin' his muscled ass and twerkin' his biceps in Los Angeles yesterday. That little lick of the tongue tells me that Jakey is getting all excited about making margarita jelly shots for his My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding viewing party. Sadly, the margarita jelly shots were a bigger hit than the neon yellow flower waist sash Jakey wore as a tribute to the exquisite gypsy flower girls. (Yes, I know that's just a windbreaker, but I'm still going to believe that it took 2 hours and several mirrors for Jakey to perfect that side bunch of yellow.)
