We have something a little different today on the Spotlight. This time we're focusing on an organization. SMYAL is the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (you can see why they just go by SMYAL!). It's based here in Washington, D. C. , but has branched out into Northern Virginia and Maryland.
An organization like this is needed EVERYWHERE! SMYAL works with queer youth to help them deal with sexuality and gender issues. Here is their mission-
Our mission is to promote and support self-confident, healthy, productive lives for LGBTQ youth as they journey from adolescence into adulthood. To fulfill our mission, we concentrate our commitment and energy on five focus areas: (1) Life Skills & Leadership Development, (2) Counseling & Support, (3) Health & Wellness Education, (4) Safe Social Activities, and (5) Community Outreach and Education.
SMYAL came about in response to cross-dressing youth being seen as mentally ill and hospitalized at the local psychiatric hospital (St. Elizabeths). They started out as a referral service but realized that the main problem facing queer youth was isolation. They started operating a social club out of borrowed space for queer youth so kids could meet in a safe place. Now they have their own Youth Center in its own building.
SMYAL's other services include a hotline for youth, educational trainings for schools, counseling services, sexuality education, HIV testing and counseling, peer support, and activities for youth. SMYAL encourages youth to be leaders and some of its Board members are youth. Another program they have is RYSE (Rainbow Youth for a Safe Education), which is a group of queer kids working to combat bullying in schools.
When I worked on the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard, we got many calls from kids who were either questioning or trying to come out. The number one question they asked was, "Is there anywhere I can go to meet other gay kids?" The relief in their voices when we referred them to SMYAL was incredible. I hope there are organizations like this in other areas. We really need to assist our queer youth as much as possible.

I can't believe I actually thought Jake may been off on his owns omewhere because he may have been angry and embarrassed about what was done to Ryan. What a fool I am. Expecting totally!! Esp in HQ. Poor Jake. Funny how when he was working out hard and riding bikes all the time with Matty and Lance he was healthy and looking mighty fine. Name the baby- yup, it's pronounced like "smile." They do fabulous work with kids. They really let the kids do a lot of the work in the organization too, coming up with programs, deciding what issues to work on, etc. I think the RYSE program was developed by the kids. I love how they build leadership skills in kids and also encourage kids to continue their educations. I would love to know if there are any organizations like SMYAL anywhere else.
I would really like to know where Austin fits in all of this? or rather why he tolerates. For the good of his bf's career? only I don't think things are actually heading that way...

Interesting to see what the DVD reviews will be for JFC. I think JFC will be better appreciated and recognized in this format.
SYMAL and RYSE are the kind of organizations that are really needed out there. Kids need safe and supporting places and services while they are trying to find their way.
It seems that more kids are finding their sexual orientation at an earlier age and they need things just like SMYAL and RYSE. For many it will be the only support they have or think they have.
My niece is HS and she tells me that there a lot of kids that are out at school and "seriously what is the big deal" about it. My nephew is in middle school and there is a definitely bullying on those who even hint at different.
It is interesting to see the difference between genders (more)and age groups in relation to young adults and the whole date/orientation/growing up.

Sorry Tom. All the accusations and insults you hurl at Jake makes you sound like a not nice person. None of us know any of these people but I don't think they are doing anything that you have to take so personally. You don't even know if half the things you accuse them of is true. Would you want someone to do that to you and your life? Sure they are public figures but that does not mean they don't have feelings. You sure have forgotten all the good things Jake does.

Do paps usually hang around Cabo airport on the off-chance a celeb might be passing through? So the paps were tipped off, no surprise there, but why at the airport? They missed a perfect opportunity to show the Golden Couple strolling on the beach, building sandcastles with the kids,etc etc. Unless of course there were other people on this trip who didn't want to be seen...;)

I think Jake and/or his PR may feel this PR campaign is helping him. This campaign is probably doing exactly what he wants it to do for the casual Jake fan. A casual Jake fan may have heard the gay rumors but now has seen one or two articles in magazines or stories on the internet about him being with Reese, so they just go with that. And they decide that the reason that everyone thought he was gay was because of Brokeback. The casual fan does not read all the stories like we do, and will not pick up on the contradictions, revisionist history, and outright lies. They'll just believe what they see.
I think in light of these recent pics that this fauxmance will not be ending any time soon. And I really would not be surprised to see them take things pretty far.

Interesting. Since usually girls/women are notably the first to seek help and support in other life situations. Then again, I think for a gay teen guy there is much more fear and isolation in his own peer group than it is with girls.
I also think it equates to how teens can sometimes see sexual orientation - the classic double standard. Girls can be lesbians and that's almost even better especially to some 17 yr old guys who have watched mainstream porn. While for guys, being gay can be seen as them not being a "real man".
Growing up is hard enough, it shows again why services like this are so needed.
That is a good thing.

I have never seen as many pictures of a couple supposedly seeking privacy for most of these to NOT have been setup by their PR.
I haven't seen many pictures of Scarlet Johannsen and Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Abby Cornish and Ryan Phillippe or even Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaugn (when they were) dating.
They just didn't need the "push" that Jake and Reese supposedly need. Those are the couples I believe had something going on cause they didn't flaunt it in the media with WEEKLY pictures coinciding with gossip, innuendo and one of their ex's film openings thrown at them.
Also the public at large isn't clamoring for the Jake/Reese pictures. Instead (like most things) the media is trying to "tell" us what we need to see by foisting them upon us. In Jake and Reese's case their people seem to be going with the tactic of beating us over the head with this relationship until you do believe it.
Also, after hearing a lot of Ryan's interviews in Promoting Stop loss he did a LOT to improve his image. It's not just me that feels that way, it seems to be a comment that keeps appearing on sites that have discussed any of his various appearances. Even Howard Stern's fans when calling into the show during Ryan's interview often commented that while they thought he was an asshole before he seems pretty cool.

I think Mr. Gyllenhaal has realized that I am extremely jealous of his black Mac. Whenever I spot it, I direct ugly karmic energy towards it. Poor guy. He has to hide it in his backpack. But serves him right.

I have had the opportunity to observe Ryan Phillippe from close quarters. He is a pretty cool guy.

Stop Loss was great I hope some of you had the opportunity to see it. No one expected it to be great at the box office but like Flags and Breach it will probably become required viewing in History and Government classes in years ahead.
Ahh, Will and Grace shopping and packing on the pounds, with Grace's two rugrats in tow. Lots of hunky men around for Will to look at when he gets bored (with that bad ankle). Of course, the whole thing is timed to coincide with a movie starring Grace's x-husband *and* the woman he left Grace for, a woman almost ten years his junior. Almost as much of a coincidence as Reeke showing up in NY, and Will's mother and sister just happen to be in Paris. Life's little coincidences.
Well, nothing cures bitterness and jealousy like a margarita and shopping with your queer gal-pal, your rug-rats and twenty of your friends from the paparrazzi core.

What good things have we done lately, Tom?
No biggy but I have worked in the Medical field for 35 yrs Rattler. I make sure my patients get the best possible care they can and treat them with respect.
For the last 3 yrs I have worked with Cancer patients. It has been the most rewarding 3 yrs of my career. The job I do right now gives me joy when I see that Chemo although harsh saves lives.
I get to know my patients and I love when they reckonize me and are happy to see me. I actually am excellent at making something unpleasent more comfortable and less fightening for those who are facing life or death.
So I have have done some good things lately Rattler. Have a good day.

I would have thought the exact opposite since girls, even when younger, are usually more willing to talk about their feelings and more likely to seek help. But it's true that even today girls might have an easier time than guys when it comes to sexual orientation, which would mirror what we're witnessing in society at large. So you're most probably right in thinking that the SMYAL receives more calls from boys than girls.
I always find it terribly uplifting to read about how increasingly accepting today's youths are. The statistics about suicides among gay teens are still written in letters of fire in my mind. I just hope I'll still be alive when some announcer comes on to tell us that those monstrous figures are a dreadful remnants of the past.

I knew something was up when I popped in and saw over 40 comments on a Sunday morning. Gag. And right, how many paps hang out at an airport in Mexico.
Last night I took another look at the what makes a bad beard thread on DL and saw one post that I thought really sums this up: a beard is supposed to just cover up, not "scrub"--and what is happening here is scrubbing. By that the poster meant the constant, pushing it in people's faces, calling attention to relationship, etc. and that is one of the reasons no one believes it. So maybe we should call in scrubbing, not bearding.
Reading about SMYAL and knowing how many kids are out there struggling, and then to get more Reeke! Very sad.

Good stuff the Jeesers and US weekly say the J&R romance started in early 2006 at the Critics Choice awards and at Rendition wardrobe fitting the day after the divorce was filed. btw adultery is defined as sex with another while two people are married to each other, not separated or in the midle of or after filing divorce but while married. got that? and if by Rome pics/same time divorce was granted this 'real romance' had been going on....well guess what Reese is an adulterer too with help from Jake. she might not been first if Ryan cheated before but it doesnt make her any damn better.
My posts aren't negative toward Jake. I don't know him. I did observe and hear from others what Ryan went through during his relationship with Team Reese. Not so much personally with her but professionally. My motivation when I came here initially was to give Jake's fans a heads up about things to come. At that time I posted how I came in contact with RW & RP.
I actually really like this blog I think its owners have a unique voice so I'm still here. But I know this is a Jake fan site I try to keep my posting to a minimum. I'm not trying to convert people. Sorry if it seems that way.

Rattler my point is plain and simple. I prefer the Jake I knew between BBM and Rendition. The person we see today is not that same person. No one can change like that overnight. Just the way I see it. It seems to me we have talked about two different people and again I prefer the first Jake.
I also wanna say I am sure we all do good things everyday in our lives whether it is giving our best at work or taking care of our families.

I have to say Tom I felt this same way a few months ago. But I also had to walk away and take my personal feelings out of it. Now I just see Jake as another actor doing what he feels he has to do to get ahead. I don't hate him I'm just totally indifferent to him now. Sad but true.
I love the fact that SMAL is doing so many great things for teens and that some of them are themselves giving back.

I think some of that had to do with most of our volunteers being men and women who called would hang up rather than talk to a man. Frenchy, the Switchboard always got more calls from guys than from women. I think some of that had to do with most of our volunteers being men and women who called would hang up rather than talk to a man. A few women who called actually told me they would call and call and if a guy answered they would hang up and keep calling hoping to get a woman. I think the girls may have done the same thing.
Thanks for the clarifications Wicked. What do you think accounts for the fact that men outnumber women as volunteers? Is it just a matter of how the organization came to be (inception, recruitment, etc.)? I'll speak frankly now: each time I hear about gay teens in the news, they mostly talk about gay boys, rarely girls. And if they do, it's like an afterthought. Is it because girls are perceived as less "threatened" by society standards or simply because they are female?

The more I think about it, the more I think Reese might be one of those women who truly thinks she's a lesser entity without a guy. Both image-wise and as a person.
We often talk about her being a terribly calculating image-conscious businesswoman and I think she is but this might be compounted by a certain level of insecurity. Why would she have trapped Ryan with a baby when she was so young to begin with? That wouldn't be the first time such contradictory attitudes are witnessed in one person.
And if I'm correct, she will want to preserve her new "relationship" at all costs. I still think I was right when I presumed this show was for the long term.
And now just for fun, how many of you have turned off the lights yesterday between 8 and 9 PM? I did, but my sister steadfastly refused to postpone our watching of "Out of Africa" so the DVD player stayed "on"!

I think you may be right Frenchy about Reese and feeling the need to have a man around image-wise. Clearly it doesn't have to do with wanting a man relationship-wise, otherwise she would have gotten herself a real boyfriend. I do think she also likes having someone around she can control and push around.
I'm not happy to see these new pictures. Agree that Jake seems to have more chemistry with men than any woman, except maybe for Jennifer A. Even in the Rome pics, he had a glow next to the cutie in the blue scarf, but not next to Reese. His body responds despite what he tells it to do. I just don't know what to make of these pics. I am going to visit my sister for a week in the Tampa St. Pete area. Leave tomorrow. I think I will take a Jake Break during this time and see how I feel when I return.
I think Stop Loss is much better than the Perez comments, and hopefully word of mouth will build it's box office. It is quite a coincidence that Reese is so active on the very week her exes movie opens. I think she still has feelings for him. The opposite of love is often not hate, but indifference. She is not indifferent.

Sorry Tom. All the accusations and insults you hurl at Jake makes you sound like a not nice person. None of us know any of these people but I don't think they are doing anything that you have to take so personally. You don't even know if half the things you accuse them of is true. It seems like the nanny is handling the kids in Cabo and through the Security process. But it's Reese who walks them through the paparazzi melee.
People has a little blurb about Reeke in its current issue. They are listed as the hottest of the spring fling couples. Pic of Reese at the pig farm is part of it and People says, "They (meaning her and Jake) took her kids to a pig farm." Just one sentence and now Jake was there. So easy.

Okay.. looking at these photos, the one thing that really hits me is the distress the pap attention at LAX causes her children. surely as a mother the last thing you would ever want to cause is that kind of unhappiness (which would nullify any enjoyment of a holiday). I just cannot understand how she can let her kids go through this, and I also cannot understand how Jake can also let this happen. we're talking about a four year old for blimeys sake. What harm can this be doing a poor child.
I find the whole thing mildly (to say the least) repulsive and like Tom from jersey think Jake is somewhat deminished by his involvement (if this isn't how you feel tom i apologise in advance).

The same thing happen to Ryan when he arrived to LAX with his kids. Paps are dirt. One pap followed her to Disneyland and harassed her. They called to cops. He was found dead in his apartment.
When Ryan was in LAX all of their bags were taken out ahead of them and he waited in the airport with the kids. It seems like the car was pulled to the curb and he picked them both up and went into the car.
It seemed much different and only one picture of them ducking into the car outside the airport was circulated. Now it could be that there were far fewer paparazzi there for that but it did seem better managed. For example the nanny could have easily picked Deacon up and moved alot quicker.
whatever.. this may sound too critical but to my mind Jake's
a) complicit in trying to derail a former friend's reputation, presona life and latest film;
and
b) using children to promote a 'brand' (which is pretty dead in the water anyway).
surely, if you were famous you would shield your children from publicity as much as you could, to to the extent of them being almost invisible, not parade them about like cattle.

Meg i have been given jake the benefit of the doubt on a lot of things lately. Those days are over. those pics this morning were the final straw in jake is innocent in all of this. Jake has created an entirely new person. he has transformed in front of our very eyes.
Nothing has changed i still think he is gay, All about image meg and I am now convinced that jake is in the decisions. He is not calling the shots but he knows what is going on.

That is why PR is so desperate that Jake not be papped with anyone else. And it isn't just a gay/straight thing. Just seeing Jake with anyone else makes it clear as day that Jake doesn't even like Reese. They lack chemistry of any kind. Jake would have more chemistry with a corpse than he does with Reese.
It is also clear that Reeke wants to be papped with the kids, and these pictures were clearly arranged, especially on the Mexico side. I don't think that is the case with Ryan.

Thanks Bad Seed, I have not left quite yet, but I do have a 100 chores to take care of before I leave. Can't seem to tear myself away afterall. Just took a break and looked through all the pics on IHJ, enlarged and slowly. The only time either is smiling is at someone else, not each other. In the shots where they are looking at each other, no smiles, no warmth, very stoic faces. Why even bring them - because it was a family vacation. Jake probly showed up just the last couple of days. After being papped 3 times without Reese [and consider that the last time with Reese was when she was coldly walking ahead of him while he hobbled on crutches, 'what a bitch' was in comments sections all over the gossip sites] and then the US weekly story, Jake HAD to be seen with Reese or else.
Just like I said the nanny takes care of the kids 80/90% of the time. They're just a photo accessory for Reese when its convenient or when she wants sympathy against the 'Evil Paps'. and btw let's not confuse Ava 'looking mad/upset when she's being papped' with Ava

There's plenty of times Ava's papped without Mom [like with Dad/Abbie/others] and she looks fine like a normal little girl. Its when she's with Mom that she looks unhappy, afraid and stressed. Those Norman Lear Center videos are terrific. I've always liked Wilson Cruz, and he is just great talking about his experiences coming out.
I think it is a interesting point that some of the people who are most reluctant to cast gay actors out are those who are gay themselves.
And another one is the call for putting pressure not on the actor but on the institutions that are creating the climate to keep actors in.

I agree that the age factor of the producers themselves might be playing a role here. The Geffens of this world didn't grow up in a very gay-friendly society didn't they?

I do find the comments made that HW is still doing the same thing they did 40, 50, 60 years ago. Right now as much as they say they are not a Jack Warner or Louis B Mayer but they really are. Change must happen in the institutions of HW as well.
But we are starting to see changes. Let's hope those changes continue.

I agree with the first part, but not the second. I think that he likes her, and is genuinely thankful for her companionshiop and unswerving emotional support. Let's face it; we don't see him with too many people in LA right now. We see her with other people, including her immediate family, all the time. She is a supportive friend who will never trash him in public. Given how flaky his other acquaintances are in HW, Reese is a blessing.
But, he's caught in the web of deceit and lies, constructed primarily for his benefit, not hers, and he can't get out. Until his personal settles down, he's going to need her emotionally, not sexually. I think that he's put his libido on hold.
Oh, and by the way, the crutches are a psychosomatic metaphor for his current emotional state : sometimes he has to lean on Reese, sometimes he has to lean on the crutches, but right now, Jake has to lean on somebody. His family and best friend aren't around, and I don't think that he trusts anyone in HW as far as he can spit.
Emotionally, his life is a mess.

Women volunteer in other organizations period, no matter if the cause is women-centered or not. Animals, kids, economic justice, you name it. Gay men often volunteer in organizations that benefit gay men. I'm not saying they don't volunteer anywhere else, but they definitely put their time into their own community.

I really hope that Jake does what

I had to go to the doctor for my
checkup Friday March 28th. I have
been spitting up blood for a couple of months and my doctor wants me to have an ultrasound on
my liver on Thursday, April 3rd.
I have been having some pain in
my abdomen so he really scared me
by telling me that there is a small chance that it could be a
tumor or even liver cancer. Say a
prayer for me and keep me in your
thoughts. I have not told anybody
and I am really scared. That's why
I am not going to be blogging any
more this week.
If Jake really loves Austin as
Ted always seemed to think, he had
better hold on tight. I just hope
that Jake and Austin really do not
get hurt.
Is there anyplace where I could

In my opinion, I personally have
always thought that Jake is bi. If
he has chosen Reese, I truly do
wish him the best. I also wish much happiness and success to both

I was able to see Stop-Loss tonight and I have to say that I was impressed. I went with a film/video maker and although neither of us are into war films we felt the characters were totally believable right from the start and quickly got into the storyline. The performances were top notch. Kudos to Ryan, Channing, Abbie and JGL. Although we disagreed on the ending we had to admit that we liked the film overall.
Re: Norman Lear Panel. Good points on all sides. I had to go with Cruz on this one though. It’s a personal choice bottom line.
