Play Ball!

Spring has not sprung until today. Opening Day. It is the first day of the 2008 Major League Baseball.

We know that both have played, Jake's a fan, and have to suspect that there is at least one baseball game in that stash of video games.

Wondering if Jake would be up to catch the very first game of the entire league? Today rest of Red Sox Nation catches the 6:05 AM EST game against the Oakland A's live from Tokyo Well being a Red Sox fan you would think nothing less of him watching opening day. But the big question is. Will we see that Sox hat come back now that baseball is back?

Austin. Again a mystery man, even with baseball. Is he a Texas Rangers or a Houston Astro's fan?

Austin doesn't seem like a baseball hat kind of guy, hard on the high hair, but it could be part of his accessories for going undercover and undetected.

Yes!!!! They played Sweet Caroline in Tokyo at the bottom of 8th just like at Fenway.

And yes I made the pilgrimage to Fenway yesterday to ensure a good season. And the addition to my shrine was added the first day of pitchers and catchers reporting for spring trainings.

I appreciate everyone at OMG putting up with my love of the Sox.

Thanks guys.

Wow, Ikimas Soksu! Love it! We're watching a little of the game, it seems strange to be in the 8th inning at this hour. Listening to Rem-Dawg's voice carrying over the airwaves is definitely a sign of Spring and Summer. :)

Didn't get a chance to post about our Gorgeous Buy in their suits yesterday - love Austin's Modern to Jake's Classic - they complement each other well. It's Jake all the way for me, tho, he rocks a suit IMO, just knocks me out. ;)

Happy Opening Day, everyone! :)

Interesting bit you posted in the other thread Wicked. And I totally agree with flf's comment; I can understand the not coming out, but not the bearding. Not to mention the bearding just makes it more obvious that he is gay.

You Red Sox fans are funny!

Thought I would bring this forward from the last thread. It's from After Elton. The link is in the previous thread. Wanted to hear people's thoughts on it.

Q: What do you think would happen if a major male movie star like Jake Gyllenhaal or Ben Stiller came out? -- Anson, Billings, MT
A: Assuming it’s someone at the peak of his career like Gyllenhaal or Stiller, and not a character actor like Ian McKellen or a “respected elder” like Jack Nicholson, I think it would all depend on how much money his next movie made. If the movie was a hit, he’d be lionized and hailed as a trailblazer in the media, and the offers would pour in (even as he’d be ridiculed and attacked on right-wing talk radio and on the “comedy” circuit; the paparazzi and online gossipmongers would be especially vicious).

But if that actor’s next movie tanked—and this is more likely, since most movies disappoint—well, that failure would be seen as instant confirmation of the “fact” that audiences won’t accept a gay male leading man…and that actor’s career would take a serious, perhaps non-recoverable hit. He’d still have to deal with all the nasty ridicule from right-wing talk radio and the online gossipmongers, but he probably wouldn’t get much more leading man studio work. He’d probably have no choice but to gravitate to character work or television, where he’d have another shot at stardom…but a television career would, again, depend on the success of his initial offering. If that first show failed, he’d probably have to take a few years off and hope for a comeback once things calmed down a bit.

How do I know this would happen? Well, I don’t, of course; it’s all speculation. But it’s pretty close to what happened to Ellen DeGeneres (and Anne Heche, for that matter).

Gotta love the Red Sox fans!

Please continue to throw out movie suggestions. Suggestions that are mentioned and/or seconded by more than one person will be in a poll. We'll watch the winner as our first film. So far I've heard-

The Ice Storm
Lust, Caution
The Wedding Banquet
Fried Green Tomatoes
Gods and Monsters
Psycho Beach Party
Die, Mommy, Die!
Gia
My Own Private Idaho
Wilde

Boy, you'd think we like Ang Lee or something!

I didn’t get a chance to comment yesterday- I’ve always loved Jake in a suit. He has that classic old-time movie star air about him when he’s dressed up. As Austin has matured, he has also become sexier and sexier while wearing a suit. The most recent photos of him show that confidence is as important as the cut and fit when it comes to dressing the part.

Two things about Austin and baseball:

Hjuila has posted a short article/interview with Austin about Lenexa/Full Count.

Austin is good friends with Matt Belisle: "[Belisle is] one of my best friends...I find it ironic that he's pitching for the Reds when I'm doing a show called 'John from Cincinnati.' " Nichols hopes to see his friend pitch, but in the meantime, he's unraveling the mystery of John Monad along with everyone else. Link

Thanks Wicked for bringing that over the comments here. It is a very interesting read. Will have to think a bit on it -- still in Sox mode at the moment.

BV --- I remembered Austin talking about that after I had already done the post. I think I was in a total Red Sox Frenzy this morning watching them win the opener against the A's. YESSSS!!!

And thanks for news about the interview on Hjulia's site. What in the world would we do with out her and Spooky2th? They rock, when it comes to all things Austy.

Please check out Hjulia's site Austin Media for the interview.

Seeing that pic of Austin reminds me that both men can really rock a plain white t-shirt as well as a suit.

I suggest narrowing the movie choices down to 3 before a vote. All good ones so far. It will be hard to choose.

Go Dodgers -

Here's some info on the tradition of Sweet Caroline (per Wikipedia): :)

Sweet Caroline is popular at sporting events. It has been the signature song played during Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park. The tradition began when Fenway Park music director Amy Tobey had noticed that the song was used at other sporting events, and decided to try it out at Fenway.[5][6] The team continued to play the song occasionally (usually in the middle of the 8th inning) when the team was winning.[5] In 2002, new owner John W. Henry requested that the song be played at every home game, because he liked the response that it got from the crowd. The sing-along gained fame in a sequence of the 2005 movie Fever Pitch. In the karaoke and sing-along versions, the chorus has fans singing "Sweet Caroline..." with the fans imitating the music to "Oh, oh, oh! Good times never seemed so good" followed by the chant of "So good, so good, so good!" The next line goes "I've been inclined..." with the "Oh, oh, oh!" tag repeated. The song is also played at Auburn University, Boston College, Penn State, Ohio State, New York Giants, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, San Jose Giants, University of Mississippi and Vanderbilt University baseball games, and University of North Carolina and Florida State University sporting events, as well as University of Kansas, Michigan State University, Davidson College, Brevard College and Charlotte Bobcats basketball games, as well as New York Jets home games, UMass Amherst hockey games, University of Wisconsin and Iowa State University football games and Bowling Green State University football and hockey games including the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and the Florida PAnthers. Indiana University recently started playing it at their basketball games.

Internationally, it is usually sung by supporters of English football team Arsenal and Northern Ireland fans where it is heard at Windsor Park before the match, at half time and after the final whistle is blown. At the annual Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, which draws large numbers of tourists to the city, "Sweet Caroline" is amongst the few songs which are hailed as anthems of the major sporting event/festival. The entire stadium tends to burst into simultaneous song during the chorus when the song is played during breaks between games. Sweet Caroline is used as the official club song at Brunton Park, home of Carlisle United FC and it was voted for by the fans so it is a fans favourite in Cumbria.

In Australia the song is recited at St. John's College, University of Sydney after sporting events and at formal dinners where the resident wear academic attire.

Everything you read from those who have worked with him to those who have met him, have only good things to say about Austin.

I think what is so endearing to many is what a great story of two really good people finding each other and finding the Big Love. It's a story about Hollywood that isn't a Hollywood story. It is just sweet, simple, and heartfelt. Can you wish for anything more for two great guys?

I think that After Elton answer is unfortunately probably true. The thing about it that makes me really angry is that of course the star being gay would get the blame for poor box office, even though as the writer pointed out most films don't do all that well. And you know that even if the film did well you'd still get those whispers that it would have done better if not for the gay star. Is it possible a film would lose a few butts in the seat if had an out actor in it--probably. Should that be a reason for not making amovie--no. At one time nobody would have cast black actors as the lead (only the "buddy"), but look at Will Smith now, he's the biggest star when it comes to the box office, and yet somebody along the line had to take a chance on him. We just need somebody to do that with a gay actor.

The other thing is that unfortunately the past examples of people coming out have not involved major stars or people who are on the same level talent-wise, so that is one more component in the equation that changes thing. IMO the Ellen show was not very good, and Anne Heche I don't think was a very good acress and had a reputation of being crazy and difficult to boot.

What we really need is for someone with power and at the top of their game to come out first. I think someone at the level Jake is currently at would have problems.

And speaking of coming out, it seems like Jodie has dashed back into the closet. Wonder why?

nobody can say what's going on in jake' head , maybe the bearding means career plans, maybe it's more deeper than that!

I see him more as a kind of man who dreams about "normal" life with wife and kids and not at all like someone "walking alone and dinning from time to time with women to keep ambiguity"
He could have chosen a young starlet, he prefers a friend for ages, mother divorced with two kids instead ,familial cocoon, safe and stable
At least its my bearding explanation lol

Wicked said...

I think the After Elton writer is correct, that if someone came out, TPTB would need to see that the coming out would not hurt box office. It's all about the almighty HW dollar. If the person's next movie was a success, then the coming out did not hurt and the person could get roles. Of course, if the next movie was a flop, it would be blamed on the coming out, and it would motivate even more people to stay in the closet. A successful A-list (or even B-list) coming out needs to be the right person at the right time in the right roles.

This was on TMZ...

Broadway playwright Jeffy Whitty is once again lashing out at Jay Leno -- this time for asking Ryan Phillippe to give his "gayest look" on the "Tonight Show."

During an interview last week, Leno made light of Ryan's first acting role -- playing a gay teen on "One Life to Live"-- by asking the visibly uncomfortable star to give him his "gayest look." Queer eye for the unfunny guy!

In a letter on his website, Whitty, who won a Tony for "Avenue Q" and is openly gay, calls Jay a jerk for "using the stereotype that we're laughable and really, all the same in the end." Whitty also links to various images and articles of "gay faces" -- like slain teen and hate-crime victim Lawrence King -- and asks Jay, "Which one's the gayest to you?"

After sparring in 2006 over Jay's relentless "gay-baiting" jokes, Whitty and Leno allegedly talked and, er, straightened out the matter. But with this latest incident, it's safe to say Leno and Whitty aren't exactly fishin' buddies.

I afraid that HW would find a reason for the success of a movie that was based, not because of the out actor but for everthing else -- it was the story, it was the co-starts, there was an already had an established fan base - to explain its success.

Of course if the movie flopped there would be only one reason to the TPTB's wouldn't there, it would be all blamed on the actor, and nothing else.

You're probably right Special about the flip side of it. In short, damned either way.

I'm glad you posted that story about Ryan on Leno, I kept thinking of it and forgetting to mention it in my posts. Seems like we still can't even get past the stigma actors face just for playing gay.

One thing for sure, we've all got to get out there and see Harold and Kumar the week it opens.

I'm very curious to see what Chace does after the stories the past few days on Defamer and Dlisted about him and JC, and with Underwood stating that they are no longer "dating". So far the rumours have not stopped them from hanging out together in public.

On another note, my mother and many other people don't know that Ian McKellen is gay and out, and they enjoy his movies. He's not scandalous like so many celebrities out there, looks like a nice guy, this helps to his public image, rather than a crazy straight star (ala Britney).

After I read the After Elton article it made me think of something. Since Ellen did do a mainstream movie "playing straight" and came out after...do you think that she would ever be able to go back to the big screen and play straight again? Would the movie going audience accept that now?

And time for one of my ENORMOUS posts (sigh)

Flf wrote in the previous thread:
Interesting article, Wicked. Society as a whole is still very homophobic. So is HW. But Jake doesn't have to come out of the closet if he doesn't want to. And it's certainly no excuse for bearding or pimping his fake relationship to the extent he has. Is it such a catastrophe to walk alone and have the occasional dinner with some female if he's so hellbent on keeping the ambiguity going?

Flf, I truly wonder if Jake would behave the way he does if Reese was not the beard. I'm pretty sure she's calling a couple of shots publicity-wise. I still remember that article that lauded Jake for keeping his private life private. This went out the window so brutally starting with Rome that I highly doubt it was Jake's sole decision.

I appreciate everyone at OMG putting up with my love of the Sox.

You're welcome Spesh (SIGH). ;D ;D

About Austin:
Great to read that he's such a nice guy. So along with the capacity to do justice to a great suit, that's one more engaging trait he shares with his partner. ;)

About the aftermath of a major male actor coming out:
I agree that Ellen and Anne Heche are rather irrelevant examples. And I also agree that it's totally impossible to predict the right actor, at the right moment, with the right role and the right BO. So if that's what TPTBs are waiting for, HW will most likely see its first successful openly gay male leads well hell freezes over.

But when I think that these days even the straightest of the straights (or those rumored to be) are most likely to bring disappointing results in theaters, I sometimes wonder if producers are not actually protecting the gossip business, you know the one that sells all those heterocentrist fantasies, whether of the Harlequin or sordid variety.

It's also interesting to see that the article points out the nastiness and ridicule that might accompany any coming-out by a male lead but not the support that man may get from the public, the press, TV, the Internet, etc. I'm not saying homophobia is disappearing, but often I get the feeling that the increasingly gay friendly attitude of the audience is totally discarded as irrelevant.

And as Destiny said:
At one time nobody would have cast black actors as the lead (only the "buddy"), but look at Will Smith now, he's the biggest star when it comes to the box office, and yet somebody along the line had to take a chance on him. We just need somebody to do that with a gay actor.

Couldn't agree more.

I can see your points Sad but since Jake comes from a very accepting and liberal family and background – or so we've been told – I feel that he would be comfortable with a male lover and having a family with another man. As for choosing Reese… I still think professional and other considerations (not necessarily Jake's) played a crucial role in that pairing.

About those movie suggestions:
I want to point out that The Wedding Banquet was originally suggested by Destiny some time ago at WFT when we were discussing the possibility of a film club over there. She's the one who pointed out that discussing another gay-themed Ang Lee movie, this time with a comedic touch, could be very interesting. :)

I'm glad to see so many people "getting to know" Ryan. I know that sounds dumb because he is a celebrity making appearances and obviously trying to present himself in the best light possible. However, he really is "a what you see is what you get" person.

Will Smith- the right guy, at the right time, in the right roles.

I agree, but was it "predictable" from a salesman's POV? And that's what HW moguls want these days: recipes. And Will Smith is not really a pioneer. He comes after other respectable black actors who can claim some successes of their own: Poitier, Freeman and Washington just to name three from different generations who more or less paved the way.

When I'm thinking about a successful out gay male lead, I'm not necessarily thinking about blockbusters. For instance, the BO Denzel Washington gets is nothing compared to Smith's but it's still sufficient to ensure Denzel with a solid career and for him to get quality roles. So in my book, Denzel is a successful actor but I'm not sure his career is the result of the right guy, at the right time and in the right roles. He slowly but surely established himself as a talented and reliable thespian. (Those who are familiar with Denzel's career please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Obviously those who cast the first black actors were taking risks and there were no tried and sure shots. Social changes also helped make Blacks on the big screen more "acceptable" to HW's PTB.

So I'm still thinking that trying to get a successful openly gay male actor would require a trial-and-error, progressive process, with more or less successful out actors along the way. Combined with an increasingly gay friendly audience and HW finally waking up to this reality - maybe in 50 years if we're generous - we could end up with more actors eschewing the closet.

And the crux of the matter remains: who will be the one to lay the first bricks and who will be the one to lend this man a hand?

I saw the Leno/Ryan interview on the web. I have been turned off by Jay for some time now, having become a staunch Craig Ferguson fan. But this latest episode is the final straw. Tasteless and unprofessional. Kudos to Ryan for not taking the bait.

Re the coming out, I think HW is missing the boat and behind the times. (what else is new). Movies fail for lots of reasons. People now get news from bloggers, phone cameras and videos. Nothing stays secret anymore. Honesty has become the valued trait, way more so than heterosexuality. No one likes a phony and I don't think Jake will become a star as long as people suspect he is not being honest, whatever the reason for it.

Portia Rossi did Arrested Development after it was known she was gay; my memory fails me as to whether she was already with Ellen, but before she was with Ellen there were stories that she was dating one of Lionel Ritchie's daughters.

I know there were plenty of pioneers before Will Smith, but Will Smith more than any other black actor has played roles that would have ordinarily gone to white actors, unlike say Poitier, so that is why he jumped into my mind as an example. But you're right french about it not needing to be block busters, and in fact I'd rather see Jake have a career more like Denzel's.

I was thinking about Ryan P. and his reaction to Reeke, he must know there's something weird going on there and he probably knows her reasons to do what she's doing, even if he cannot/would not say anything personal. And then I came across the following. If you pay attention, it looks like he's not talking about a real relationship (because it doesn't exist), but about the bizarre and strange of "Reeke":

Phillippe has spoken about the emotional toll his divorce took on him (...) He avoids magazines featuring photos of Witherspoon with her new love, actor Jake Gyllenhaal. "It's bizarre," he says. "There's plenty of times when I say, 'What a strange situation I've found myself in.' But at a certain point you know it's going to happen, so you are prepared in some fashion."

Interesting conversation today. What AfterElton said has already happened to Jake to a degree. And that's only with rumours.

A lot of people have suggested that Zodiac's BO and Jake seemingly not getting many roles are down to the rumours. So really Jake doesn't even need to come out.

I still think Jake would have been better off with bearding a starlet, someone he actually had control over, not the other way around.

But sometimes I wonder if he went so big because he thought it afforded him more protection.

Great posts overnight.

I seriously don't think Zodiac's box office has to do with Jake, or rumours - it's just not a mass-market film. Apart from the odd miracle movie, it's all about the recipe, as someone (sorry I'm rushing so I can't credit you :( ) said above.

Ryan does sound very cool.

Completly disagreeing with the theory that the ZODIAC box office numbers had anything to do with rumours surrounding Jake. ZODIAC was one of the best films last year (if I remember corrrectly, third after “No country...”and “There will be blood” for the critics) but it was definitly not a crowd pleaser. The people who were crititzising the film said it was “too long” or “boring” or “the case was not solved, unsatisfying ending”- I cannot remember having read one comment dealing with Jakes sexuality. And ZODIAC was also an ensemble film with three main roles.

Have a look at the five top films at the box office......Does anyone really want Jake or Austin involved in one of those??
