Out Spotlight XVIII

Since today is Easter, we will focus on an out member of the clergy. The Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson is the first openly gay bishop in the U. S. Episcopal Church. Robinson came out in the '80s, after his divorce, and has been with his current partner for 20 years. They are planning a wedding in June, because Robinson says, "I always wanted to be a June bride."

Robinson received his M. Div. from the Episcopal General Theological Seminary in New York City. While doing an internship at the University of Vermont, he met his future wife. A month into their relationship, he told her he thought he might be gay. The two discussed it and decided to marry anyway, and had two children. They moved to New Hampshire and started a business and ministry doing retreats in the winter and a children's horse camp in the summer. Robinson's ministry has focused on youth, clergy wellness, sexuality, and AIDS. Robinson's ex-wife still runs the horse camp.

Robinson came out and sold the business to his ex-wife. He met his current partner, Mark Andrew, in 1987. When they moved in together, they had their new home blessed by a bishop. Robinson is very close to his daughters and still friends with his ex-wife.

In 1988, Robinson was elected Canon to the Ordinary, which was the executive assistant to the bishop of New Hampshire. He held this post for 17 years, until he was elected bishop in 2003. Before his election to bishop was ratified, Robinson was accused of both inappropriate touching and having links to a porn site on his website. Both allegations were debunked and Robinson was consecrated under heavy security and wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Many clergy within the Episcopal Church were unhappy with Robinson's consecration. Nineteen bishops wrote a letter warning of a possible schism. Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he did "not see what all the fuss was about" and this would not affect the Church in South Africa. The controversy continues even now. Robinson was not invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Lambeth Conference, an invitation only gathering of bishops of the Anglican Communion. Prior to this conference, a group of conservative bishops will be meeting in Jerusalem to discuss Robinson's consecration. This meeting is perceived as potentially schismatic.

If this is what you're talking about regarding Cantara, I don't take this seriously.

how big do these pigs get?

Depends on the pig. Some pigs stay quite small. Some pigs get up to 600 lbs. A friend of mine had one that big and there is a picture of the pig sitting on the couch! It is hilarious! Eventually the pig got so big that they had to give her to a farm.

can you have them in a yard?

Some places do not allow you to keep pigs at all. Some places have rules against keeping any type of "farmyard" animal.

A romantic relationship between Reese and her Rendition co-star Jake Gyllenhaal is rumored to have been responsible for the breakdown of the marriage, a fact that Reese denies.

She might sue!

Happy Easter!

I hope we can keep the more on Jake and less on what is going on with his parents. Whatever is going on it seems like it should be a private matter, even if some people choose to post about it on their blogs.

Discussion like this effects everyone close to it, and I feel bad how this would feel not just for Jake but for Maggie and especially Naomi as well. Whatever has happened, it seems she is handling it with dignity and grace. Hope we can do the same.

Obviously, Cantara doesn't want to keep it private. I hope Naomi and all the Gyllenhaals are okay. Stephen too.

Happy Easter to all those who celebrate!

Great spotlight today. One thing I've always wondered about when reading the hate spewed toward V. Robinson in G*d's name. Why are the ones under his care never asked to give an opinion? Why aren't they questioned as to his performance, whether they think he is fit to lead, to guide? His flock, as it were, should have the final say, not someone from thousands of miles away who knows nothing about their lives, who cares nothing for their spiritual comfort save for how the campaign against gays in the pulpit can keep the hate - and face - on the international stage longer.

Bah. I'll never understand those who must demean others in order to elevate themselves.

Oh, and I LOVE peeps! And the bunnies, too! Blue and purple are my favs! Course, they must sit out for a day or two, to get crunchy on the outside first.

Fair thoughts attend thee!

Thanks for linking that Sawf article reese won't. I hope reese does sue. I would love to see her and Jake have to testify under oath when they first started having sex.

I was surprised to see on imbd that Jake is still just listed as rumored under the "Nailed" overview. Filming is slated to start April 14th. Does anyone know if Jake is def. in the movie?

Besides rumors about projects it sure doesn't seem like Jake is too much in demand in HW. Hence reeke?
At least that what his pr has advised Jake. I quess.

I found the post today particularly interesting since I had just read a book excerpt a few weeks ago about Bishop Paul Moore. He was an Episcopalian bishop in New York, and his daughter found out he was gay after he died and was approached by a man he had been involved with for many years. He was married twice and nine children with his first wife. However, unlike a lot of closeted men, he was very supportive of gay rights, people with AIDS and ordained a gay woman. But he was never out himself.

Your rescue bunny was lucky to find a nice home. Unfortunately it is just not exotic animals people return to the wild, it happens a lot with cats. We've taken in two cats directly off the streets over the years, and have adopted other cats from shelters. People think cats can live in the wild too, catching mice, etc. And the cats we've taken in couldn't be sweeter, so I have no idea why they ended up on the streets. I will never understand how people can be so heartless to animals.

Happy Easter to all OMG visitors who celebrate this holiday!

Great choice for today's post Wicked.

A man who never lied to his wife about his sexual orientation – note the difference with the man's attitude in yesterday's article I married a gay man, a good husband and loving father, a productive and helpful member of his community, a man of the cloth whose work and faith are acknowledged by his own church and who has been in a long-term stable relationship and still some people feel the need to lambaste him because his partner is not of the "right" sex!

I agree with Me, what about his flock? Often those religious PTBs are so disconnected from the pastors' and churchgoing public's everyday life it's scary. As a Catholic-raised woman I certainly can attest that the Vatican do's and don'ts often clash with my own values and beliefs.

Talking about how parishioners react in such situations, I think they often stick with the person who provided them guidance and comfort, as you can read in the article below (remember Rev. Bradley E. Schmeling Wicked)?

Members of St. John's Lutheran Church last weekend filed by their pastor, hugging him and exchanging jokes. Gleeful children rushed past toward a treats-laden table. Many in the 350-member Atlanta congregation say they don't plan to let the Rev. Bradley E. Schmeling leave the pulpit Aug. 15, as ordered last week by an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) disciplinary committee because he is in a gay relationship.

Full article:
Faithful Flock for Rev. Bradley E. Schmeling

Unfortunately, the Lutheran Church was less accepting than Episcopalians and Rev. Schmeling lost his appeal. :(

I hope we can keep the more on Jake and less on what is going on with his parents.

Word Special.

And thanks for the bunny story Wicked. Animals are still considered objects and commodities by most laws so it's no wonder some people treat them as such.

I don't know what Reese is going to do with the pigs. Her children are much too young to properly care for them. They're most likely bound to be amused for some time and then lose interest. At least this is what happens in most households. Of couse mom has the money to hire the required help. Or the piggies will find their way back to the farm once everybody's tired of them.

Anyway, her beaming at the camera during that particular purchase outing did not exactly endear her to me nor heighten my opinion of her.

The funny thing about the rumored relationship being responsible for the breakup is that it's the babblers who have been implying that Reeke has been going on a longer time than people think. So if the story grows legs, Reese can thank the Babblers.

Anonymous said...

I still remember when Jake said he was single for the ladies. What would the babblers say? was he a liar?

Anonymous said...

What would the babblers say? was he a liar?

That lie is okay to tell because he was just protecting Reese. Her divorce wasn't final, you know.

One of the things that cracks me up is that one of their favorite pictures of Reeke together is from Oscar time 2006. They use this pic to say there were sparks between Reeke even then. But during that time Reese was still very much married and pimping out her marriage and family to get that Oscar.

Yea the Critics Choice awards in Jan/Feb 2006.

Another babblers nonsense.

By Reeke Rome promotion Reese confirmed that she was "dating" Jake long before divorce was final.

Wicked said...

Why aren't they questioned as to his performance, whether they think he is fit to lead, to guide?

Probably because they think he is. The Church doesn't want to hear that.

One of the things I loved about Bishop Robinson is how upfront he seems to be about everything. He told his future wife he thought he might be gay. When he was treated for alcoholism in 2006, he was upfront with his congregation about it.

Peabunny and Carina will be getting some extra treats today. Both love corn chips, Carina so much that she jumped into the bag of corn chips I was eating one time, so they will get some of those in addition to their regular diet today. The vet recently said Carina has bunny rabbit love handles! Probably from the chips.

Peabunny has survived two wives; Carina is his third. Female bunnies do not seem to be as hardy as the males. Carina is definitely his favorite of his wives and the one he has been with the longest. They have been together for 4 years. She just adores him and he is happy as a clam about it!

Reese is playing sweet coquette for the camera, s'thing she does like rote. Jake had his 'adoring' face expression on, the one he uses whn necessary for photo ops. his hands/fingers are are tightly twisted together. the babblers say he had his hands held together because he was nervous but mainly because he wanted to touch her so bad but knew he couldn't. what a laugh.
get this, babblers believe Jake's answwer "hilarious" to paps question in dr appt/car park vid "how's your relationship going with Reese?" was a confirmation that he and Reese are a couple. huh? sersly.

Paps "how's your relationship going with Reese?"

Jake "Hilarious"

Babblers: hey everyone esp the nonbelievers - this ^ is confirmation for sure that Jake is straight and he and Reese are serious, living together, possibly pregnant and will be getting married.

After all those Reeke photo opportunities, sightings and tabloid articles babblers are still looking for "relationship" confirmations?

But during that time Reese was still very much married and pimping out her marriage and family to get that Oscar.

How can you say something like that?!?
Don't you know that Reese only agreed to pimp out her family after Ryan demanded it to promote "Flags of Our Fathers" because she was working so hard to keep the marriage together for the kids?

Just like her taking the kids for photo-ops on the beach (and yes, the Babblers admit that Reese staged that for the cameras) after there were rumors of Ryan cheating is a confirmation that Reese is a great mom and great wife who was working so hard to keep her family together.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Gene Robinson - his case is sort of emblematic and so much has changed socially since he came out (I think things are far more difficult now for someone in his position than 20 years ago).

A pity that most people here are obviously more interested in talking about Ms Witherspoon and what the "Babblers" are feeling or thinking...

The Carina story was so sad at first...glad there was a happy ending. Unfortunately some animals don't have the same fate. I don't understand how pll just throw animals away when they get tired of them. It breaks my heart to see dogs walking helpless and lost on the road/freeways by themselves (thats how I got the dog I have now). Thanks for sharing that with us.

Glad you are enjoying the Boys on the Side track frenchy. It is a nice sampler of women's music/ female vocalists/ love songs.

Wicked, I loved the picture of Carina gaining trust. She certainly picked the right house to hide under!

When I was a kid we convinced my Dad to let us buy a duckling out of a cardboard box full of them at the hardware store. They used to inject the eggs with dye so you could get a red or green or pink duckling or chick. (The adult feathers grew in the normal color.) Ping (named after the children's story) had a good life for about a year and a half. But when he matured, he got territorial and attacked anyone who came into our yard. My parents found a home for him with some people who kept ducks; so he got to live in a flock rather than as a lone pet duck.

But I totally agree with you that people should be responsible for their pets for life. If you want to see a bittersweet Web site check out dogsindanger.com. They list dogs that are due to be euthanized soon in the hopes of finding them a home. Even there they have had to add a warning not to rescue a dog just because you feel sorry for it unless you can make a lifelong commitment. I guess some dogs have been taken and returned.

Regarding the publisher, I agree with Spesh that we shouldn't delve into the senior Gs rel'ship, but it disgusts me that she took that wholier than thou attitude about WFT and yet thinks nothing about declaring her yearnings in public sections of her Web site. Hope it was a good Easter for all those celebrated.

It was great to have a hint of spring on Easter this year. Some years, you don't know if you will get snow in MA.

I know that officially spring has already begun, but Spring really isn't Spring until baseball season starts on Tues. GO SOX!

Living in MA we have heard a lot about Rev. Robinson and the process of his election. It did cause much discussion and division in the Episcopal church. A neighbor in her 80's told me, this is my church and I 'm not leaving it, I'm too old to change, and does it really make a difference in how he serves the Lord?

Talking my friend, Sue at church today, and we spoke about Sally Kerns. She was aware of what Ms. Kerns said, and told me that she wrote a letter from the mother of a gay son to another. She said I'm sure I'm not alone. I told her no your not. She said Good, we need more moms telling her to love her son and not to change the gift God gave her.

Sue is incredible mom, who told me one time, "I knew my son was gay when he was 5 years old, but I had to wait for him find that out for himself, I just made sure I was there for him along the way." Now that's example for Sally Kerns.

Hi everybody, sorry for the long post but have many thoughts today :)

Thanks Special K for the spotlight. I've always felt sad that most religions seem to be so entrenched in homophobia. Its like gays are the scapegoat for all the problems in the world. Its bizarre and unfair to say the least. Its also heartbreaking that so many non-straight people are excluded from their religious backgrounds and often feel alienated from God.

Another thing to add about buying pets is to try not to support pet stores that exploit animals for profit. The SPCA or a qualified breeder is probably the best bet. I would also advise people against buying birds for pets. Its hearbreaking to think of an animal that can fly imprisoned in a cage for sometimes more than 20 years. I dont' think God gave birds wings for them to sit in a cage.

On to the topic of Cantara, which I'll try to keep centered around Jake, I still resent her email to JW and Sarah last year where she apparently said Jake "despised" WFT and the gay rumours. Since then we've learned this email also included the then unpublished GQ article. the article however obviously says nothing about WFT so that part must have been from Cantara. The question remains whether Cantara made this up or got it from Stephen, and then of course what his motivation would be for saying such a thing (if he did indeed say anything of the sort). I have to admit my impression is that Stephen is somewhat homophobic (at least in relation to his son) and that this has negatively affected Jake. I dont' know this for sure, just a feeling I've had for some time.

Lastly I'd like to admit that I have realized that I would somehow feel more accepting of an arrangement between Jessica B and Jake than I am of his current arrangement with Reese. I think this is because I assume JB is not straight. No idea why this sits better with me but for some reason it would feel like less of a betrayal if he hooked up with a lesbian.

p.s. a very late congratulations to giusi-poo for getting her jaustin vids back on youtube. i've been enjoying them immensely all over again. thanks hon.

Am I wrong or did I read somewhere that Jake is upset that his fans have not accepted reese. I hope Jake knows his real fans have nothing against reese but are just upset that he is living a lie. No amt of money is worth it. Staying single and not dicussing his personal life would have been such a better route for Jake. This all has made him look so insecure. I keep saying this Jake needs to have faith in his acting skills. He is a very good actor and will shine when he can be the man he is.

She said Good, we need more moms telling her to love her son and not to change the gift God gave her.

I believe this sincerely. True love, in whatever form it takes, parent/child, opposite sex or same sex partners, is a gift from God, Higher Power, or whatever you believe. To question or belittle it is the height of arrogance, I feel. I loved this from your bio of Rev. Robinson, Wicked, -"Retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he did "not see what all the fuss was about" and this would not affect the Church in South Africa." I'm glad to see that in the clergy, as everywhere, gay or lesbian people are proudly taking their place in the world, wherever they choose to be. :)

Wicked, your bunnies are adorable! I'm glad they are OMG's official Easter bunny ambassadors! Having an animal is a commitment, they are not disposable, they are living things, also put here by a power greater than ourselves, so I hate to see any animal exploited, abused or treated as less than what they rightfully are - other living beings we share the planet with who also have intelligence and feelings. My pet bunny was brilliant! :) If you find you can't give a lifetime commitment to them, then effort should be made to find a proper home for them. I'm glad Tinhat's pet duck found a home with a whole flock, and didn't have to spend his life as a lone duck. That was very cute! ;)

Hope everyone had a great day today however they celebrate it. I love this time of year not only for our religious holidays, but for the ancient celebration of Spring that preceded that. Happy Spring! And of course, Red Sox Opening Day! :)

Tom, Jake would have no right to have a problem with his fans not taking to Reese. No one has been more disrespectful to Reese than Jake in both the way he behaves around her and the few 'public' comments he has made.

Of course, she returns the disrespect so they are even.

Does Reese know that Jake is just hungering to have those pigs slaughtered so he can eat them?

By the way, was at my parent's house over the Easter break and saw a magazine from a few weeks ago.
Apparently, Reese has ordered, yes ordered, Jake to never shave his chest because she likes how hairy it is.
Guess she's been looking at pictures of him topless on the net.

For an animal that does not talk, bunnies do a pretty good job of communicating.

Queer Birds Find a Home to Roost

Julius and Big Daddy, the roosters who chose each other as companions, have found a permanent home on a farm in Alabama, reports foster mom Brenda Lee in Los Angeles. The roosters came to L.A.'s A Dog's Life Rescue organization last year as a couple, and continued to eschew "normative chicken social conventions," wrote Lee's partner, Jayna.

Big Daddy, who is much larger, "is Julius's protector, and at night he roosts over Julius like a mama hen sitting on a brood of chicks," Jayna wrote.

The women agreed to foster the fowl until a place could be found with rooster-friendly zoning codes. It took eight months, Lee said.

Their suburban San Fernando Valley neighborhood technically forbids roosters for noise-abatement reasons ("The rescue group did some talking," Lee says), as does New York City, where the roosters made quite a splash on gay blogs.

"We only got two calls. And one person wanted to split them up, which was out of the question," Lee said.

But this week the foster moms fielded a call from an Alabama farmer, and Julius and Big Daddy were flown Thursday to their new home.
