Out Spotlight XVII

Today is the anti-Out Spotlight, actually. I wanted to find a list of folks who were gay but remained closeted their entire lives. First of all, it was really hard to find such a list. I had to Google it in many different ways before I found this source. And this source is not actually a list of famous closeted gays who never came out, but a slideshow of folks who were gay before out was in. It's really interesting! From the slideshow, I culled the names of those folks who never came out before they died and were outed posthumously. I left off people who did not really try and hide their sexuality or who I wasn't sure if they might have come out very late in life. These names are in no particular order.

Thornton Wilder- playwright
E. M. Forster- author
Will Geer- actor (Grandpa Walton)
George Grizzard- actor
Lorenz Hart- lyricist
Frankie Howerd- comedian
Paul Lynde- actor
Sal Mineo- actor
Robert Reed- actor (Mr. Brady)
Clay Shaw- businessman
James Whale- director
Raymond Burr- actor
Alvin Ailey- dancer
Peter Allen- Broadway star
Glenn Burke- Major League Baseball player
Ian Charleson- actor
Montgomery Clift- actor
Rock Hudson- actor
Langston Hughes- author
William Inge- screenwriter
Charles Laughton- actor
Liberace- entertainer
Roy Cohn- lawyer
Noel Coward- playwright
George Cukor- director
Richard Deacon- actor
Brian Epstein- Beatles' manager

There are no women on this list. I could not find women who went to great lengths to hide. I found that interesting. Why did these men never come out? Did they really have to hide? Could they have come out and had careers? Was it the times or something else? Has anything changed?

Of how many fans (whether they are Jaustin, Jeese or simply Jake fans) are we speaking here?

Interesting comment in the last thread, Barker Fan. However, your numbers do not take into account the probably very significant lurk traffic on all those sites. I can say for OMG, based on Sitemeter, there are approximately 75 unique people who come here regularly. Of that, I would say about 1/3 post regularly. So there are definitely more of us than it appears, but also more Babbles, WFTers, WDWs, DCers, etc. too.

"So we are speaking of not more than 35 - 40 regulars, some of them posting on more than one board.
Does anyone really believe Jakes PR people are getting grey hair? I don´t think so."

I have read similar comments a few times and would like to point out...
40 people talking, 400 hundred people hearing....

Just wanted to reply/expand on the Barker post too.
Barker is correct in that this is not going to affect Jake's career in movies. The majority of moviegoers do not care who goes out with whom. Nor what actors do in their lives.
People will still see a Mel Gibson movie if it's a topic that interests them no matter what he's done.

The only kind of movie Reeke can affect is a romcom with the two of them - that would be a massive stinker and I actually don't think they are stupid enough to try it.

Where it will affect Jake though is his appeal and his ability to sell a movie on his own.

At almost 28, Jake now needs to hold the appeal he has presented to women in their late twenties and older.

The biggest flaw they have created is they have taken away Jake's own interests. He just follows Reese around. When he finally makes it back to NY, it's for Reese. He doesn't even go at a time when he can see his niece.

He's lost his independence and that is not sexy.

A couple of years ago he was often photographed with his mother. He's just swapped Naomi for Reese.
As he gets older, that's going to become even less appealing.

The only interest they have let him keep is Rufus Wainwright. And how predictable is that.
He is Reeke's Official Gay Friend just to prove they still love 'the gays'.
I hope Rufus doesn't mind being used.

Anonymous said...

I think Jake genuinely likes Rufus and I don't think he is using him. He was a fan long before Reese.

Anonymous said...

Now Rufus fan, I never said Jake didn't genuinely like Rufus, did I?

But you have to ask yourself why Rufus is one of very few on the official Reeke list.

Online polls are the least statistically sound for some allow a person to vote multiple times - as in Hello polls that allow the same computer to vote every 15 minutes - or those that track only the ISP of the vote, not the voter's email. One person can have access to many different computers and they cast a vote for the same selection from a variety of locations.

Think the best indicator of popularity/appeal would be the box office, whether an actor has the ability to pull those who don't know/care/watch what goes on in HW or the internet.

Anonymous said...

ag, YES. All of it.

To respond to barker's post, I don't think there is a huge overlap between specific fan blogs and general gossip sites, though I may only be speaking for myself - I've never posted at a general site.

Today's post: yes, it was the times. Also in many cases the individual's particular career trajectory simply didn't attract that kind of speculation. In other cases it was an open secret - Noel Coward may be the best example

Anonymous said...

And Cole Porter.

I know of only one woman that was never officially out, but was known in the industry as gay. Nancy Culp.

On IMDB there was a poll "EW recently announced their Top 30 Actors Under 30 -- who do you think will have the longest, most successful career"? Jake won with 24% and 5.432 votes- nearly 2000 votes more than the second - Ryan Gosling.

That IMDb poll allowed a person to vote multiple times - no limit, zero control.

Anonymous said...

I voted for movie club in the last poll... although the idea of book club is great too.

Re the quesiton. The times definitely plays a major factor. Remember homosexuality was only decriminalised in the UK in, what? 1967? In those old days, being openly gay not only ruin your career, it may cost your head.

My immediate gut feeling response? Lesbians did not exist in those days! :D

Seriously, do you think it's possible that lesbians were simply hiding in plain sight? Demonstration of affection, big hugs, always hanging around and/or living with the same lady and it's quite possible they were labelled "great friends" or "sisterly", not lovers. Probably because sexual attraction between two women was deemed as either inconceivable or - if rumored or suspected - an aberration that would be fixed the minute Mr. Right showed up. (Damn, I think even today some people think lesbians prefer women because they haven't met/found the right man or because they actually hate guys!)

Men I think didn't have those liberties probably because they've always been and are still perceived as obsessed wit sex (hey, some would not object to that *wink* *wink*). Kinsey caused an uproar when he published his work on female sexuality. Women were not supposed to be "sexual" beings. Fantasy-wise, theirs were to find a husband/provider and to have children.

I'll add Alan Bates to your list Wicked. I loved that actor and it broke my heart when I found out that he had lived and suffered in the closet all his life.

Anonymous said...

I agree with ag as well. I don't think his personal life will affect his career either. That's part of the reason I find this whole Jake/Reese saga so baffling. I'm still not convinced that giving a certain image to the public gay or straight guarantees success at the BO.

Personally, I think his efforts would be better spent on charity work or politics if he wants to get his name out in the public. I think people would definately remember and respect that more (JMO).

If I remember correctly, Jake did say in one of his interviews that he wanted to focus on his career. What happened?? How did priorities change?

On todays post the thought that immediately came to mind was - maybe they didn't think their sexuality defined their lives so they didn't feel the need to make a big deal about it?

Lastly - I vote for the movie club.

I still think it's because females are given a lot more latitude to express affection and be together, as opposed to men. I've been out with female friends, both lesbian and straight, and we've all hugged, kissed and shown affection in busy public places, without anyone batting an eye. If we were a group of men there would have been a commotion, I'm sure. It's the double standard and stereotype of women being seen as loving nurturers, and social bonders, given the freedom to express our emotions. Some of us are like this, but not all - and men having the burden of having to conform to a strong, silent type stereotype. Sometime sex is the only area where men have been able to express their deepest emotions and feelings. I've also known a few men who were much more nurturing with children than some women. Unfair, so perhaps this is why - lesbian women have always been here, it's just more accepted socially. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, because they may also be overlooked and not taken seriously. JMO.

I am afraid you are going to have to add Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich to your list, because they never came out. There are many others who did not. Marilyn Monroe had numerous same-sex affairs, as did Judy Garland. Joan Crawford as well. Hattie McDaniel.

If you're interested in lesbian Hollywood, golden age and post-golden age, check out the non-fiction book The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood by Diana McLellan.

As for Rufus, I doubt it's even registering for him or his management that Reeke and not just Jake (who is indeed a long-time fan) are his admiring pals. If anything, it's great publicity for Rufus. He's always crowed about his celebrity friends and fans and loves to name-drop. ;) It does gall me that Reese is now a "fan" by association with Jake. At least I know Jake is a genuine fan and he'll go see Rufus Reeke or not.

Oh, I voted for movies, btw. :)

Flaw? Jake's role in Reeke is to make Reese look good.

I'm convinced that Reeke was created as PR answer to cheated on, dumped and divorced Reese. Let’s not forget that Reeke PR campaign started in 2006, right after the divorce. Jake was the perfect candidate for the job – same management, Rendition, killing two birds with one stone (gay rumors).

True dat. It's just too bad that by eliminating Jake's individual traits, interests and, to a large degree, friends and family, they both end up looking like robots. But of course, for Reese's purposes, all that's required is Jake's presence.

Interesting post. I was surprised about Raymond Burr. Grew up watching Perry Mason, of course and had never heard that about him.

I don't think any HW producers are looking at that IMDB poll and saying let's hire Jake. IHJ put a call out for everyone to vote for Jake. I've seen them generate huge numbers in other polls that allowed multiple votes.

Good insight on Jake's being a big blank these days, and actually for quite a while. I watched a recent interview with Denis Leary, who I am crazy about on Craig Ferguson, and was struck by the contrast. The man has opinions and is not afraid to express them and is involved in several orgs he helped found. He is a lot older than Jake of course, but Jake comes accross rehearsed and guarded in interviews. I had attributed this to his hiding his sexuality, but now, I see the "do what I am told" aspect of it.

Anonymous said...

It's very disheartening to see one of the aspects I really liked about Jake slowly disappear. He always came across as having opinions, convictions, passions and a desire to do things differently. Choose work and roles off the beaten path. In retrospect, Zodiac is his last great film. And apart from Brothers, I'm not excited about anything else. I guess time will tell. For now, he's really lost all his essence. It seems over the top to say "soul", but it's pretty much true.

M, Raymond Burr's partner of 35years was at his side when he died.

Daff, I was looking very specifically for folks who hid their sexuality and/or lied about it. If they didn't tell but didn't do much to hide it or lie about it, I didn't include them. I think many of the women really were open secrets. At that time, the concept of coming out just didn't exist, so it wouldn't have occurred to most of them to actually say anything about their sexuality anyway. I'm going to check out that book you recommended. :)

The one who shocked me the most on this list- Liberace! Who, on the face of the Earth, did not know he was gay? And yet during his lifetime he denied it vehemently.

The saddest one- Thornton Wilder. Reported to be so deeply closeted that he would not allow himself to act on his sexual attractions at all. Another sad one- Paul Lynde. Would only have sex with hustlers and would not himself to have a relationship.

One of the ones I thought was the sweetest- Monty Python member Graham Chapman. He came out later in his life and worked for gay rights. When he died, not only was his longtime partner there, but his fellow Pythons John Cleese and Michael Palin were by his side as well. Sweet.

Anonymous said...

Wow, I didn't know that. How very wonderful.

Imagine also not allowing yourself to even have a real relationship as Thornton Wilder and Paul Lynde -how very sad and how much they must have missed in life.

I did a double take when I saw Liberace on the list too. :)

Seems like the only image Jake currently has is being 'cute and adorable'. Unfortunately it's not an image that fits with having a challenging and edgy acting career, or any career other than being Mr R Witherspoon.

Maybe that's what he wants, it just seems very sad and a big fat waste to me.

Anonymous said...

Cute and adorable doesn't last. Jake has maybe another couple years to be fangurl material. Usually actors age out of that fanbase around 30. I had thought Jake was going to make the transition quite well, until Reeke. Now I'm not sure what image he's going for. He seems completely subsumed by her, and it's not pretty.

I'm selfishly happy that the movie club is winning. On the other hand, it's true that given the dynamics of the blog, nothing will prevent us from slipping in book suggestions and critics inspired by each film. Music won't be forgotten either as it plays a crucial role in any movie – at least that's what I think. And any gay-themed movie will automatically trigger gay-themed discussions. :)

Interesting post by Barker in the previous thread and also by those who complemented these stats. I enjoy learning about those facts just as I love learning about the inner workings of HW and people's reactions to them.

I think it's quite possible Jake has lost a certain portion of his younger female fans simply because he got older. His pairing with Reese probably played a role as well – for these fans he lost a lot of his appeal the minute he stopped being "single". I don't think his team worries much about that since they probably consider this portion of the fandom unreliable in the long term anyway.

Does his team really want to preserve his older female fans and/or gain new ones? Since this is Reese's favorite territory you'd think pairing him with her makes sense. But given Reese A-list status and since they more or less emasculated him since Reeke began, I agree with Who'sthat in thinking that the showmance was devised first and foremost with Reese's interests in mind.

The only possible big thing I see on the horizon for Jake is that Moon project, which may turn out to be a crowd pleaser. I don't consider that movie to be aimed at the female segment. As a matter of fact, I never considered Jake as a "female pleaser", at least this is not the vibe I get from his filmography, which is probably why I love so many of his movies. :O

When he died, not only was his longtime partner there, but his fellow Pythons John Cleese and Michael Palin were by his side as well. Sweet.

I didn't know Cleese and Palin were there! Oh this is really, really sweet. :)

Thanks for the book recommendation Daff! By the way, there was another one talking about gay HW or the same topic. Does anybody remember the title? Ok, here I am with another special request: creating an official OMG bibliography listing those interesting HW-and-gays books.

You know, I wouldn't mind if you inserted a "gay news" post once in while, with a quick recap of some of the most talked-about articles. (selfish request again from a regular lurker at Towleroad!) I don't think this would compromise the blog's main focus, which is Jaustin and anyway, we all know that the second new pics or news surface, they instantaneously get all our attention back. :) :)

As an 'older' female I'd have to say that the 'cute and adorable' label is the biggest turn-off in history. I think most women like the 'cute' (Zac Efron for example) when they're young and unsure of themselves as its unthreatening and basically doesn't really involve sex. I'm pretty sure once most women are over say 17/18 that really doesn't appeal anymore, its hardly the image Johnny Depp portrays is it and I'm pretty sure most (straight) women between 20 and 80 wouldn't pass him by in a hurry. Another analogy, why is Mr Darcy (Colin Firth's portrayal of him being my obvious favourite) probably the most enduring romantic characters for woman in literture, you certainly wouldn't describe him as cute would you.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, some older and still unsure of themselves women like "cute and adorable" too.

One of the funniest things I ever read was on Jake Watch when it was closing down. Someone in the last thread was lamenting the closing of the blog and said, "So, does anyone want to talk about Zac Efron?" Non-threatening, not involving sex, cute, adorable, and probably gay, just like Jake.

Anonymous said...

It's so personal, meg - I don't see cute at all when I see Zac, and wouldn't have at any age. Johnny Depp on the other hand is well cute, even past 40, and must be cute in everyone's money ... as for Colin Firth, I think he looks like an accountant :D :D

Talking of cute I keep forgetting to get into blogger to show off my cute avatar (thanks hjulia and spooky for that).

I enjoyed your fashion posts by the way, meg :)

Someone else missing on the list is Merv Griffin, or was I the only one that did not know he was gay until after he died. A shame really that he could not be a role model since he was so succesful and had accumulated a great deal of wealth. But I guess that would not have happened had he come out.

Anonymous said...

I think women should be entitled to find different kinds of men appealing without being judged for it. Men aren't judged for finding younger women attractive. Why should women be. Different ages and kinds of people are attractive in different ways. I reject this whole notion that younger men are "less" because I think its discriminatory. It reminds me of how Heath was denied an Oscar because he was a young man, while the majority of Oscars go to young woman, which is pretty sexist.

destiny said...

ITA with all the posts above about Jake's losing some of his appeal with all of this "cute and adorable"/only interested in Reese image. I also don't see how this helps him with men, a crucial audience when it comes to HW. All of the big stars appeal to men as well as women. As for younger women preferring him single, it didn't seem like I his being with Kiki ran off the fans the way Reeke has--and there were a a lot of people who didn't like her either.

Regarding Barker's post on the other thread, pr obviously cares about sites like this even if the "official" numbers are not big as they are reflective of what is out there in terms of Jake's fans, as opposed to the casual movie goer. And I agree about the multiplying factor, I can count about a dozen friends who I've talked to about TT, Austin, Reeke, etc.

Seeing the list on the post today and thinking about what has and hasn't changed is a sad reminder of how far we have to go. While I think authors, Broadway stars and behind the scenes people are more likely to be out today, that is still not the case with actors, sports figures and entertainers. And then you have someone like Merv Griffin where people are trying to keep him in the closet after he is dead because they're afraid it will hurt the business interests he left behind. In his case I find it particularly strange that he felt he couldn't be out after he had it made.

frenchy said...

Interesting POV. Other possibilities: they did not want to award an Oscar to one of the gay cowboys. Or maybe they were tacitly banking on the fact that men have longer careers in HW - and therefore more chances to get the prize - than women.

Meg has a point when she says that the Zac Efrons of this world mostly appeal to young girls. On the other hand, Orchid has a point too when she talks about double standards. I won't look further than myself: I was really shocked when I found out about Jake's age. The first thought that occurred to me was "I can't be a fan of this guy, he's much too young!"

I agree they didn't do much to hide it, but both Marlene and Garbo denied their lesbianism (Garbo) and bisexuality (Dietrich) to the very end - Garbo especially and tragically. I recall reading some pretty homophobic statements from both from late-in-life interviews. And I loooove Marlene, btw - just not this aspect of her.

Simply glimpsing down these comments, I see that winterbird has already touched upon the too-obvious answer (to us vintage hippies who lived back then) to your question of why men did not OUT themselves.

It's made quite clear in a YouTube video ~ which can speak for contemporaries of Brian Epstein, anyway ~
[ HERE ]
~ in short, as related by those who knew Mr Epstein and were there ~ not only was being a pouf even in your own home highly illegal, coming OUT was also an easy way to get oneself KILLED in the days prior to the 1967 (partial) decriminalization act ~ which was passed almost exactly one month before Brian accidentally ate that one Carbitral too many. This law made it legal ONLY to be gay in one's own home, with only ONE other person in that entire house. Otherwise, your behaviour would be every bit as criminal as before.

As for the lesbian side of the issue, I think luna said it best.

p.s. In providing a link to a segment of The Beatles Biggest Secrets, I am definitely NOT endorsing that feature, which is, in its entirety, a piece of tawdry garbage. Thank you, and love to all! :)

Dick York lived in our area, was solidly married to a woman and most definitely NOT gay.

However, his Bewitched replacement, Dick Sargent, most definitely WAS gay.

Anonymous said...

Christine,

Dick Sargent came out in the late 1980s/early 1990s right before he died. He was deeply upset by anti-gay incidents that were happening around the country as a result of the public fear of AIDS. Because he knew that "Bewitched" was beloved and he was by virtue of the fact he had starred in the show, he did the TV talk show circuit where he talked about being gay. He was met with a warm reception. I remember he was on one talk show where a woman asked him what he likes in men. He asked her what do you like? She said, oh, kind, attractive, warm, etc. He looked at her and nodded, yes that's good. I agree. The audience laughed.

Then he and Elizabeth Montgomery (I loved her) acted as marshalls for the Gay Pride Parade in LA (or SF?-forget where) later that year. Soonafter, he had died of cancer. By the way, he had had a partner for a long time--but the partner had died before him.

Jesus, it's so easy to forget that homosexuality was once considered a crime. Each time I think about it being a felony it's Oscar Wilde and his "Ballad of the Reading Gaol" that come to mind, not a period as close as the sixties.

frenchy,
I remember reading somewhere that people in the UK had grown to be much more freaked out by homosexuals, beginning in the "Red Scare" days, due to the escapades of some very dangerous spies ~ who also happened to be gay ~ which unfortunately caused people to mentally equate one with the other. As people will.

Found this:

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada as a result of legislation (Bill C-150 AKA the omnibus bill) introduced in 1967 and passed in 1969 by then-Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada, Pierre Trudeau (who later became the 16th Prime Minister of Canada). He famously commented, "There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation."

Orchid, my point was not that Zac Efron is young and that's why it was funny that the JW person was interested. My point was that the JW person clearly seemed interested in probably gay, and as a result, non-threatening sexually, men. First Jake, then Zac. That's what I found so funny. Hi Blurb, I see what you are saying about JW and the irony of it all. I think the point I was trying to get accross is just that we as women often get sold the idea of what a "real man" is, which is really its own kind of sterotype. And heck some of us have more "unique" taste in men and women than others ;)

It chonicled the story of two women "accused" of lesbianism who defended themselves by submitting love poems they'd written each other. Apparently at the time people thought romantic friendship was a much higher form of love than mere sexual "beastly" behaviour, and that such pure love couldn't co-exist with such sexual activity. Interesting how ideas change through time.

Hi Blurb, I see what you are saying about JW and the irony of it all. I think the point I was trying to get accross is just that we as women often get sold the idea of what a "real man" is, which is really its own kind of sterotype. And heck some of us have more "unique" taste in men and women than others ;)

Frenchy, I can't imagine men or women not finding Heath beautiful to look at in his earlier films such as Monster's Ball, the Patriot and a Knight's Tale despite him being in his early 20s. Some people just have a beauty that shines through at any age.

I totally, wholeheartedly, agree, Orchid. :)

Guys, the Biel theory wouldn't surprise me in the least. It would certainly be convenient for them both ;) I just wonder if the fact there are rumours about both would make PR hesitate before putting them together. I agree also if they went this route Reese would have to break up with Jake first.

Anonymous said...

Hey Reese, wait up!

All these two do is shop.

The Bad Seed said...

Maybe she was running ahead so she could stand and hold the car door open for him. LOL

The Kray Brothers' shenanigans didn't help matters much, either.

Christine, these two guys I also learned about thru movies, lol. But I agree that the mere mention of homosexuality seemed to trigger some irrational fears. Here's another example which I found in that article about gay rights in Canada:

The court case of Everett George Klippert caused much discussion of homosexuality among Canadians. In 1965 Everett George Klippert was interrogated by the police as part of an arson investigation in the Northwest Territories. Klippert was arrested after admitting that he had had sex with other men. When psychiatrists determined that he was unlikely to stop having sex with men, he was declared a dangerous offender and sentenced to life in prison. Maclean's, Canada's popular newsweekly, then printed an article sympathetic to homosexuals. This led to increasing calls to reform Canada's law on homosexuality. Klippert was released in 1971.

ITA. But Heath never looked like a little boy, more like a beautiful young man. Same for Jake in BBM for instance. But guys like Efron too me are just too, hmmm, childlike or girly. Arghhhh, I don't want to offend anybody here, I'm just talking about my personal tastes. :)

From my experience (and I've had alot) one crutch means 50% to 80% weight on the injured side. Not totaaly avoiding stress, just giving the injury a chance to heal but still maintain normal walking activity but lighter weight. Looks like a soft tissue thing, ligament, sprain. Not a broken or shattered bone. Actually sprains and strains can be tougher to heal, they take longer. Sometimes it's better to break a bone.

aaaw...he has his "work" shirt on too...

Why would he "shopping" with a hurt ankle??

These two get more bizarre by the day : /

Marie Kreutz said...

I kinda like Jessica Biel. I heard the rumors with her being gay, even seen pictures of her with a woman apparently her girlfriend. If Nailed is filmed (with both Jake and Jessica) J&JB together is not gonna to surprise me in the least, very convenient for them both.

Anonymous said...

Yea, Reese has her purse, her shopping bag and her coffee. That's all she cares about.

It is good to 'get out' and do some movement with a hurt limb, it helps it heal. But the sour look on her face? She's no friend.

Anonymous said...

Why isn't she walking closer to her man, especially if he's injured. I'm not gettin' a lotta warmth here, people. She doesn't deserve him! ;)

When Austin was on crutches summer of 2006 and he was sighted out with Jake, Jake was seen helping him out of the car; they also were seen at the Virgin Record Store getting CDs and at a concert where Jake was seen smiling at Austin on crutches.

What happened to Jake's leg? Did the ankle injury get aggravated?

Marie Kreutz said...

And it also looks to me like Reese wasn't showing any sympathy for her limping man... Poor Jakey-Poo!

This is hilarious. But at the same time pathetic for Jake. And why he would go shopping in such circumstances? I would rather sit at home and watch a movie. Even if he needs something he could have it delivered, no need to go out walking and looking that way.

The Bad Seed said...

Like I said before most of the time doctors REQUIRE you to walk on your leg/foot daily but only put 50-80% of your weight on it, which is why the one crutch. They do NOT want you to sit at home. Trust me, I have lotsa personal experience as an injured person!

Anonymous said...

Jake should be grateful she didn't make him carry all the stuff!

Anonymous said...

I totally, wholeheartedly, agree, Orchid. :)

Great minds think alike :-*

Anonymous said...

ingrate, she probably expected him to carry everything and that's why she's pissed.

That's more what one would expect. :)

Clarity said...

yeah...but Bad Seed...why walking around so far away from home???

I could see what your saying and a track setting would be a better place to exercise it..no??

It looks like he's in pain.

Anonymous said...

I was wondering how the Gyllenbobbleheads would spin these latest pics. They did a new post with the pics and they leave out the one where you can see how far ahead of Jake Reese is walking.

The Bad Seed said...

Clarity, far from home? It's LA, people drive to go shopping, whatever. he doesn't need a track lol. Doctors want you to do everything like you would, walk around, all that stuff. They WANT light activity, you don't need a track for that.
Yea, he looks like he's in pain. GOOD. maybe this'll be a great way for him to see how Reese treats him. So far, I'm not impressed. Sure hope Jakey sees the light too.

The Bad Seed said...

And the babbles are saying Jake shouldn't walk on it, he needs to stay home on a couch blah blah. everyone's a doctor. *rolls eyes* Unless you're an orthopedic surgeon or until you've broken enough bones like I have (foot, both legs, pelvis, hand, both arms, all done at different times) you have no idea how the treatment/healing goes.

Anonymous said...

It looks like he's in pain.

I'm no expert, but it looks like if he now needs a crutch, it's getting worse? He doesn't need to be dragged around shopping - I hope she takes good care of him. ;(

The Bad Seed said...

BTW does anyone have links or info on the Jake/Austin on crutches pics or sightings? I would love to see/read them.

Clarity said...

Bad Seed - I lived in LA for 5 yrs so I know what its like as far as driving. My point was that I didn't see the urgency in shopping on a bad ankle as opposed to excersizing it on a track somewhere. I'm sorry but I can't fault Reese here. If what your saying is true and he decided to go out this way then it's on him I guess.

Those pictures are sooooo funny. What a couple of strange ducks. Quess Jake got hurt doing the dirty with ????????

Sorry I had the wrong Darrin earlier guys. I loved Bewitched.

Orchid, you had some very good points about not saying what a "real" man is, so what I really should have said is that "cute and adorable" is not for me.

Even if walking is good for you, I can't see dragging around for a photo call when you've got an injury.

Anonymous said...

See, every time I've sprained, torn or generally fucked up my ankles and knees, (Going on 9 here now) the last thing my orthopedic guy wanted was for me to walk. (Not that I could)

Instead I was given a series of exersizes to help the damage tissue to heal, promoting strength and flexibility without the added stress of weight bearing. There's one particular towel I have a love/hate relationship with.

And, speaking only from personal experience here, one crutch doesn't really do much of anything except throw you off balance while gouging Crand Caynon like divets in that one armpit. A cane or walking stick would serve Jake better. As an extra bonus - giving the smack down on those that annoy you.

Maybe that's why Reese is walking so far ahead - out of angry crutch range.

How true! How can all this dragging around and shagging around and tagging around do any good? Tssk. Tssk.

Hi Evelyn. I see you've taken note that we caught on to pictures being taken every two weeks like clockwork and have now decided to pull out the big guns and make Jake get out there more often, leg be damned.

Won't help. We still all know this is fake fake fake.

Oh gosh, I hope so! ;)

The Biel Theory wouldn't surprise me in the least either, hell, we're practically writing the script! While I'd prefer to see any and all bearding on Jake's part come to end once the roots of Reeke are finally dug up and burned, this really would be convenient for both J & J. Even if it's just played out in copy. But, yeah, please, no. I want this all to be a terrible memory.

Those crutch photos are just pathetic. Reese running ahead to open a car door? Yeah, right. A loved one would be by your side, step by slow step until you got to where you wanted to be - together. If they can't pretend to be a couple when Jake's this vulnerable, they're doomed. Not that they've managed a passing mark at all.

Anonymous said...

looks like reese is carrying his coffee for him. her one act of charity. how touching. wonder how much that cost him?

oh and beware of jeff/babbler/troll. looks like s/he left a comment on flynet abou the OMGers even tho only like 1 flynet commenter said anything about bearding, most wanted to take care of jake. but troll acts like everyone said they're fake. talk about obsessed in trying to prove something. or is troll abcessed, like a bad infection? lol

^^I think so - what is that guy's problem?

ITA. No matter how long it takes or if the injured person says to go ahead. You still stay by them in case they need something, if just for companionship. A friend of mine has CP and uses hand/elbow crutches. She walks very, very slow. But I stand beside her, making conversation until she takes the next step. At first she was always apologizing for being so slow, but I told her, 'no, it's okay. I'm in no hurry.'

But that's just how I feel, and the rest of you too by the looks of the comments. Guess that's why were not actresses in HW.

Absolutely! You'd want to. :)

Notice that flynets caption is on the snarky side. Mentioning her high salary and leaving Jake in the dust. They may be the appointed paps, but they are getting their 2cs in too. They can't help but see the real truth. Babblers are saying she is giving Jake lot's of TLC. If that's what TLC looks like, Jake better run for the hills. I think the "business relationship" is unraveling.

Anonymous said...

TLC = Total Line of Crap

She sure is!!!

another wierd thing is the release of the pics. Flynet had them up on their site on Sunday night, said it was Saturday Reeke was shopping. why the more than 24 hr delay? but flynet has been wrong, maybe they were taken on Sun?

btw no one else/sites has the story/pics. no one even cares anymore. lol

What? No body cares about Out Spotlight XVII anymore?

The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

What a pity.

Jake better run for the hills.
maybe that's how he 'injured' his foot. he tried to get away but she wouldnt let him. remember Misery? "I'm your biggest fan' so she broke his leg so he couldnt get away.

Anonymous said...

someone on DC commented that Jake has the crutch on his right side but the hard ankle strap thing was on his left ankel. So which one is hurt? Both? Neither? interesting..

Anonymous said...

He might have been transferring the crutch from one arm to the other, which you have to do when you're using only one. Poor Jake -if it's torn ligaments, it hurts for weeks - months - I had to rest mine initially, and I don't think he's had this injury long.

I can't attach links or anything but there are a lot of sightings reported of Jake with crutches guy (Austin) ages before we knew he'd damaged his ankle. And one photo I think.

Wicked,
I wanted to post and say "Thank
you" for answering my questions on
the other thread. I will ALWAYS
think Jake and Austin were involved at one point. Now, I am
not so sure! It is interesting to
me that Austin has been pictured
with only 2 ladies the last two
years or so.
As for Jake and Reese, if it is
true, I wish him the best. I still
think they could have handled the
questions better. Maybe that was
part of the attraction-that she is
an A-list actress! I am only joking.
Tell Tink she is a princess for
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II also likes corgis. You already know she is a princess.
I may not post as much, but I
have really enjoyed it. Keep up
the good work, Wicked and Special
K!
