Back to School

It's back to school time and this time it's Film School for OMG'ers. This is something actors, or a director's son or cinephile could discuss.

Is this the camera that is going to make analog film absolute?

Some think so. This is the Red One ultra high resolution digital camera.

Capable of processing five times more information than any other HD camera and matched with a 35mm PL lens mount, this new technology is considered by many to be the closest thing to shooting on film since, well, shooting on film. If all of Red‘s promises prove true and the around $17,500 price tag (without lens) for the camera, 90% less than the cost of a Panaflex camera, results in a supply that keeps up with the demand, the Red One could become a favorite of independent filmmakers. "It delivers all the dazzle of analog, but it's easier to use and cheaper—by orders of magnitude—than a film camera. In other words, Jim Jannard's, the founder of Oakley, creation threatens to make 35-mm movie film obsolete."

Just as there is a debate about film vs. digital camera for photography, so is the debate for movies. With television production going to High Definition as well, it seems like the digital format is giving movie making a run for its money. But all are not convinced. "It isn‘t that HD is sharper than film, it‘s just that it looks synthetic. Film adds texture, depth and roundness to the image that HD just can‘t do. My first reaction to hearing about Red was that it would look four times more synthetic. Which is alright, if that is the look the director wants.”

What does this technology do to the actors, does it help them or does it make them even more obsessed with their looks when you have technology to bring this type of definition to a huge screen?

But the Red One is getting fans, and not just independent movie makers. "The Red One is being used on at least 40 features. Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director, borrowed two prototypes to shoot his Che Guevara biopics, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and later purchased three for his film The Informant. Peter Jackson, the Lord of the Rings himself, bought four. Director Doug Liman used a Red on Jumper."

Will Liman shoot the Untitled Moon Project on Red?

Can you imagine Jake blue eyes, the ultra bright of the moon surface and space in this format?
Take a look at how you might be seeing Jake in the near future.

“Working with the Red camera brings back the intuitiveness, the fun, the magic of working with film,”

Class dismissed.

And some more Red footage.

Director Doug Liman used a Red on Jumper.

I just watched Jumper last night and quite liked the look of it. Side note- while we were watching, the Mrs. said that Hayden Christensen had way more chemistry with Jamie Bell than he had with Rachel Bilson. I agreed!

The darkness of space and vs. the brightness of the moon and galaxy creates a dramatic contrast.

A film's visual has to translate into a sensory experience for the viewer, it will be really interesting to see how Linman captures space, and if he used the Red One to do so.

Think it would be interesting to compare Kubrick's 2001 in analog to Linman's Moon Project (if he does shoot on Red) and see if the digital aspects enhance the sense of cold starkness of space.

I really get into films that put a lot of emphasis on the visual aspect, so the fact that Linman is trying something new hopefully means that he will be putting a lot of emphasis on that. The first film I watched in which I was really aware of the look of the film was also a sci-fi film, The Man Who Fell to Earth.

So aside from the looks and the chemistry, did you like Jumpers Wicked?

The story was kind of dumb and Hayden cannot act his way out of a paper bag. He is his generation's Keanu. Jamie Bell was good and the special effects were great.

Thought about the CGI FX for PoP yesterday for a while and the incredible possibilities it has.

Especially the sand, beyond stand storms and time travel vortexes. I don't know a whole lot about the game, but could see Bruck and company using the sand lifting off the desert floor to create characters or scenes to reveal things to Dastan and Tamina and then blowing away.

Thanks for the review. Have to say that's what I thought of Hayden when I saw Star Wars.

Hi Destiny!, I missed talking to you this past weekend. Great to have a holiday wknd, tho, huh?

So were you saying this morning that the HW press have some kind of financial investment at stake? That they purposely don't pursue the truth? That sounded like what you were saying, but I wasn' sure. I can't stick around cause I'm @ lunch and I've got to get back. But I'd like to confirm what you were saying. TTYL

Hey PG, it was great having a 3-day weekend. I didn't really do much, but the weather was perfect so I didn't spend much time indoors near the computer.

And you're right about what I was trying to say in the other thread. People who cover HW are afraid that if they get too tough they'll have their access to stars cut off, making it impossible for them to do their job. Heck, it's not even stars. About a month back I read an article in the NYT by their media reporter, and he said people, including himself, who got too critical of Fox News had their access to information cut off. And look how magazines, etc. cave to demands that certain topics are not to be discussed. The NE and Star used to be different, but then they decided they wanted to run with the big guys like US.

Hollywood and Esquire in Privacy Dispute

Following an article in Esquire magazine that dealt with the sexuality of the actor Kevin Spacey, an executive at the William Morris talent agency announced yesterday that he would discourage his colleagues from cooperating with Esquire in the future. ''As the head of the motion picture talent department at the William Morris Agency, I will strongly advise all of the agents to dissuade their clients from doing interviews with Esquire as a result of their deceptive and fraudulent behavior with respect to their interview with Kevin Spacey,'' said Brian Gersh, Mr. Spacey's agent, in a statement.

The top talent agency, which represents Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood and Bill Cosby, was responding to a cover article in this month's Esquire magazine about Mr. Spacey, an actor the agency represents who is perhaps best known for his role in the film ''The Usual Suspects,'' for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

I wish all the magazines would join forces and put their foot down when it comes to limits placed on them by celebrities. If nothing else, I rarely enjoy reading interviews anymore because they're all the same pr whitewash.

Wow - did not know that Eastwood was a top.

Dear Ted:
After delving deeper in your articles and in others on other websites, I've come to a horrible conclusion—sure hope I'm 100 percent wrong—but is Toothy Tile Ben Affleck?
—strayerch240

Dear Spin Jen:
Oh, wouldn't that just give J.G. a kick in her softer spots, which, of course, don't exist, so what the ef are we talking about? Right age and acting oeuvre, wrong dude.

Anonymous said...

Right age? Affleck is 36.

Little confused about the age thing but J. G. is soooo funny.

Well I would say Jake and Ben are from the same acting age generation.

Log Cabin endorses McCain
Gay GOP group cites opposition to FMA
By CHRIS JOHNSON, Washington Blade | Sep 2, 2:32 PM

The Log Cabin Republicans today officially threw its support behind Sen. John McCain in the GOP candidate’s bid for the White House.

The organization announced its endorsement of McCain during its “Big Tent Event” celebration in Minneapolis, which is taking place amid the festivities at the Republican National Convention.

The Log Cabin board voted to endorse the candidate Monday night by a vote of 12 to 2.

In a statement today, Patrick Sammon, president of Log Cabin, said his organization is standing by McCain because the senator stood with Log Cabin in opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment when it came before Congress.

“Sen. McCain showed courage by bucking his own party's leadership and the president — twice voting against the amendment,” Sammon said. “He gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, calling the amendment ‘antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans.’”

Log Cabin Board Chair Pete Kingma said Log Cabin also favors McCain because he is a “maverick” who often bucks his own party. McCain’s maverick behavior is a “trait most recently on display with his decision to select Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate,” Kingma said.

Ted's seems to be getting as bold as his new color scheme.

You know no one has asked Ted if the Yellow and Purple is because he's just a big ole' Lakers fan and is tired of hiding it. : )

Celebrities and the media are symbiotic. Media needs readers or viewers - bottom because they need the ad revenue. Print media is losing more and more readers every month. They are desperate to get readers to keep their advertisers. They need celebrities to bring in the readers. Celebrities need the media to help them rise in their career and also to maintain their status. And as much as they dislike each other and the way they acts they know they need each other. Cut off one the other withers.

This is what I think. I think Bristol Palin is not pregnant. Her current "pregnancy" erases the possibility of her being the true mother of Trig, conveniently. I suspect she will marry the father and then have a "miscarriage" before the general election, cue sympathy vote for stress to Sarah Palin's family brought on by evil Democrats. It's almost Rove-ian in detail.

prairiegirl said...

You know, Destiny & Special, I totally wasn't thinking of that angle, about the media & celebrities needing each other. I mean, we saw it this year, when Ent Tonight was going to show that video of Heath at the hotel and several celebrities & their agency threatened to boycott their show if they did show it.

Surely Ben Affleck had already been guessed at before as being TT? That is funny about the "same age" comment. If it was someone else who was 36, then why after all this time would Ted have not already ruled out Jake? Wonder if there's a specific reason, too, he uses the word "oeuvre"? Heavy Sigh. Had to google that one, too. I'm beginning to think I should be reading a page out of Webster's every night before I go to bed.

destiny said...

Interesting theory It's Easy.

J.G. is about as bold as Ted can get short of saying Jake Gyllenhaal

Special K said...

Now what will Ted say about Gray Goose? Will he be as bold?

Right age and acting oeuvre

oeuvre means art/artistry. oeuvre and age: Ben and Jake both were 11 when they made their acting debut and both debuts were in films. Beside Jake in one Homocide tv show ep [directed by his dad] Ben & Jake both do only films not tv.

destiny said...

Good detective work Maybe.

I don't think Ted will be as bold with GG, he seems to have a soft spot for him.

Very interesting about the camera. I've reached the point where I won't watch a TV show unless it is in HD, unless there is absolutely nothing else to do. And there is almost always something to do on the internet. I can see why actors are not happy with new technology though. It reveals all flaws.

Had an internet problem again this AM. I thought I would melt down having to wait for my husband to get home to fix the problem. I am totally addicted.

The J.G. is so obvious, I agree Ted must be referring to something besides calendar age. Ted is getting more blatant. He has warned toothy he was on the verge of outing him and seems to be following through.

Just one thought-do you think Jake
could sue Ted? Has Ted ever been
sued by any of the stars? I am just curious is all. I will catch
you later-I have to get ready for
work.

Ted never said who's Toothy Tile.

Anonymous said...

The last time TC mentioned age. Adam B is 28.

Dear Ted:
I think One Confused Blind Vice's Toothy Tile is Adam Brody from The O.C. He has Rachel Bilson, and he's up and coming.
Helen
Canada

Dear Canadian Fakin':
You got that right, sweet stuff, but from what I hear, A.B.'s just up and comin' with R.B., not a handsome young dude. Think more celebrated and certainly more photographed. Right age and looks though.

prairiegirl said...

That JG kind of sticks out & jumps out at ya, doesn't it, lol? Hey, I'm up early, too, Kacie. These are the days for going into work in the dark and pretty soon, coming home in the dark. But dang, you are really up early.

Seems kind of mean to think, but I hope Ted is getting bold. I'd like to see him create some discomfort, IF there was any smugness or cockiness there to knock down.
