Not so Silly

Jake Anne and Ed's Q & A from Wednesday evening has been discussed, but let's take a closer look. Because Jake spoke out without saying a word. How?

He chose to accessorize.

What is it? A Silly Bandz bracelet.

Doesn't seem like a big deal. But...

... it is the day he chose to wear it and the color of the bracelet that makes you think twice.

On Wed. Oct 20, GLAAD asked everyone to wear purple to show their effort to support the end of anti-gay bullying.

While it was subtle, it seems to be that Jake was joining in sending a message of support.

Here are video clips of the evening courtesy of MTV.com

Sharp eye! Which one do you think he wore, bear (penguin?) or devil (LOL I think that's what they are) ??

Both would be clever since bear=Jacob (j cub) and the devil is well, Jake ♥

I'm glad Jake wore the bracelet! :)

The bracelet is clearly pink not purple. It is currently National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is synonymous with the color pink.

Link

The twisting of facts to "gay" up Jake is astounding.

Ramona wants her braclet back! said...

It looks purple to me and I would think he would wear the breast cancer band for the entire month of Oct. and It didn't appear that he wore it the next day.

That said, I would say that half the people that wore purple on wednesday were probably straight like me, there is a lot of support for this issue accross the board.

Only a simple-minded boob would think that only gay people would support this and an insult, look at all the straight and gay celebs that did that It gets better video, eve the President did a PSA, too bad Jake didn't.

SK thinks that only gay people support this issue and caught out again ,LOL is probably a OMG poster trying to create traffick by pretending that it's pink knowin that the "arguement" is weak, cue in SK/MM/SB to come and dispute and declare that no way would a straight actor support this by wearing a silly braclet!

Okay,so let's not focus on the color nor their possible intention, shall we not?

I say let's focus instead on speculating where and why Jake chose this particular kind of bracelet!! Let's talk rubber!

Thanks, Special, for pointing this out. I otherwise never would have looked this close at these particular set of pictures.

For a start, let us consult Wiki, for a definition and a little background on Silly Bandz.

Silly Bandz are made of silicone formed into shapes including animals, objects, numbers, and letters. They are distributed by BCP Imports and are normally worn as bracelets.

Origin and concept

Silly Bandz are made of silicone that are usually worn as bracelets or can be used as regular rubber bands and hair ties. It is not recommended, however, to use them as hair ties, as they can get stuck in hair and pull. Silly Bandz come in hundreds of different shapes and colors.

From Wikipedia:

Distribution and reception

The first Silly Bandz sets were sold online in November 2008.[1] In early 2009, Learning Express in Birmingham, Alabama became the first retail store to stock Silly Bandz.[2] By fall they were a strong seller, and became widespread across the Southern United States. Popularity began to move up the East coast of the United States, reaching New Jersey, Long Island, and Staten Island in November the same year.[3]

As of August 2010, Silly Bandz sells their product in 8,000 stores across the U.S and many stores in Canada carry Silly Bandz too. Quizno's Subs currently has Silly Bandz in their kid's meals. Seven spots on Amazon's April 22 list of best-selling toys and games were occupied by the bracelets.[4]

One parent attributed the toy's success to their being easily lost and broken, and said that, "If your friend has the princess kind, then you have to have the princess kind, too."[3] Seth McGowan, a toy industry analyst for Needham & Company, said it is refreshing that the "lowest of technologies" is appealing to children.[3] Silly Bandz have been banned in many classrooms for being too distracting, with students trading them with each other, or causing serious injuries by extending Silly Bandz up their arms, cutting off circulation.[5] [6] The toys are sold in packs of 24 for about $2.00 and some are in packets of 12 for $1.00 There are 25 different packs to chose from.

Poor peegee, had to look up what a silly brandz is! Jake stays in Brooklyn at his sister's and brother in laws place by all accounts , his niece lives there as well. If she is like my daughter she has tons of those annoying things, she even gave me a few to wear which I have.

I can't tell what color or why but I suspect that he got it from his niece, just speculation of course based on my situation.

I don't get the rubber connection peegee, do you think Jake thought it was a condom? Thought it was girly?

prairiegirl said...

Sounds like some adults have taken to wearing Silly Bandz; there are even online articles about the trend, stars like Mary Kate Olsen & Sarah Jessica Parker. Where do they get the idea?

From the blog, She Finds Mail:

Should Adults Wear Silly Bandz? Sarah Jessica Parker Thinks So.

If you’ve never heard of Silly Bandz, it’s probably because you don’t have much interaction with kids these days. The colorful, plastic novelty bracelets, shaped like animals, cowboy hats, and more, are a phenomenon with school-aged kids, and are even banned in many schools due to the distraction-factor.

I think it's great that Jake's community service work and this little bracelet shout-out continues his trend towards involvement and activity with wee ones.

I'm glad that it didn't stop with the Prince of Persia promo. Because that was long over back in June and even the dvd has long been out and distributed.

LOL - I love the comment up there about not using them as hair ties as they "can pull". Ouch, man. That makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

There's also something on Wiki about the physical dangers of these things due to some kids were wearing them up high on their arms and hurting their circulation.
Geez!

prairiegirl said...

Well, the circulation thing was in my post up there, I didn't realize it was. Sorry for the duplication.

And, by the way I could care less where Sophia is. Doesn't change a thing. Austin is gay and Jake's his superdomesticated partner.

destiny said...

I think it's hilarious that there are many days when Jack posts more than the regulars all put together.

Interesting observation about the bracelet, but I'm sorry, I can't get excited about it. The whole point of people wearing purple is to very visibly show their solidarity for gay people. If that is why Jake was wearing it, then the only one who could arguably benefit from an almost hidden gesture is Jake's psyche, for lack of a better word.

get crackin' said...

but the person that took the pic has on flip flops, Austin?

Maybe the OMG detective team can blow that pic up, find some other pics of Austin's big toe and make a detailed comparison.

pr said...

Why would Austn lie/tweet about being in Spain? And I thought that Austin was in Spain ater a stop in NY and it was Sophia that wasn't in Spain?

The reason why I think Mr and Mrs Soapy dialed back on being seen/tweeted together is because she announces that they don't seek out publicity so this way they are being "coy", they are in Spain but they aren't going to "exploit" it, get it????

no big deal said...

"Caught out again" sounds as desperate as some of the OMGers only in the opposite way. The silly band is purple and he was wearing on the designated day, but it's not a big deal. As destiny pointed out, it's too subtle to be significant or truly meaningful. I believe Jake is gay, but not because he's wearing some silly band.

Special K said...

I didn't say that he was gay because he was wearing the Silly Bandz bracelet.

What I said I think he found a way to get to make a statement, much like the way Austin RT things on twitter.

From some of the things Jake has mentioned about growing up, it sounds like he might have been picked on, and I think he can identify. I think he was looking for a way of saying something, in whatever way he felt he could.

S. Palin said...

Wait a minute! Does peegee say you betcha???? LOL!!!! How teaparty/freeper!

Jake said he was picked on as a kid? I hadn't heard that. Sounds to me like he was always pretty popular with lots of friends, into sports, etc.

why bother? said...

I think he was looking for a way of saying something, in whatever way he felt he could.

Maybe so, but it's a pretty lame attempt at saying something.

That quote says nothing about Jake being picked on as a kid. There used to be a girl that posted occasionally on ONTD that had gone through 12 grades with Jake. I remember her posting more than once that Jake was always with the popular crowd at school and was one of the cool kids.

Also re that bracelet, couldn't it just have been something of Ramona's that he picked up off the floor as he was heading out? That theory makes about as much as yours -more so even. :-)

About the picture from Spain.

Here a question. Why is it that Sophia doesn't twitpic, which is a one step thing, but does this multi step thing of going to her blog and uploading the picture, then going to twitter and loading the link?

Could it be that it strips the metadata about the picture off of it, so you don't know exactly when the picture was taken?

And this seems to be a pattern to trip pics, like the trip to Austin where she was photographed alone with the bike. You can't tell exactly when the picture was taken either.

Just something to think about.

I agree with Jersey Tom. It is time for the Troll(s) to seek help in a more appropriate manner for your anti-social behaviors. Whether or not you agree with people on this blog is the least of your problems. What has become sadly obvious is it is likely one person who adopts different names and personas each time they post within a day. That time could be used more productively elsewhere.

I watched the MTV stuff first, before coming here. Apart from the bracelet, by the way thanks for catching that, I thought Jake went out of his way to avoid the interviewers efforts to make him look like a horn dog chick magnet. He was totally noncommittal re any discussion about women. Not interested. It said to me that Jake is avoiding saying that he is gay outright, but he is not going along with the effort to make it look like he is straight. So for that I am grateful.

I'll be checking email in a bit PG. My husband is hounding me to get to this particular laptop and the desk one is being used for something, but I'll get to email soon I promise.

Oh ROMA, you didn't like the movie. I didn't get that from each and every post you made since seeing it!

ROMA said...

LOL, you may have skimmed my comments. I said I enjoyed the performances in the film --but I did not like the film. I said that I felt the film was pedestrian and Zwick missed a chance to create a great film due to his limitations as a director. I felt Anne and Jake's lively performances rose above what was, in my humble view, a mediocre film.

Unless she transferred schools with Jake the exact same year as him, it is doubtful that she went all 12 years to school with him. Because Jake went to two at least 2 different private schools that we know of growing up which included Crossroads School, and Harvard Westlake.

I'm not convinced Sophia is in Spain.

I don't have a problem with having egg in my face. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I spoke out blatantly and brazenly about Reeke; some I had egg on my face, but some I still stand atop the mountain.

And Maggie & Peter's wedding, I am still standing atop that one and that one is a coup. Reese was not inside that wedding, I'm sorry.

And I still say Sophin is toast.

I need a picture of Austin & Sophia.

Together.

In Spain.

Dated.

Give me a newspaper. A camera stamp. Something.

And I'll say hey, I was wrong. I have no problem with that at all and I won't be embarrassed.

I don't see what this quote has to do with being picked on at all. It's about his self-image and, frankly, even if he went through the normal adolescent awkwardness that most teens experience, that's not the same as being picked on. tbh, I really don't think Jake sees himself like that anymore and hasn't for a long time. It's pretty clear he's very confident in his looks, and revels in the attention his looks get him. (That's not a criticism of him).

prairiegirl said...

Sophia has been to Spain before. She could even be there now, who knows.

But for those who have been watching these two, know that the only way they were able to push their fauxmance was through Twitter, Fanpop.com, her fans' webpages and paying off Just Jared. They had no problem using Twitter, talking back & forth to each other endlessly, even while on the same plane together.

She had no problem leaking all of those personal photos onto FanPop. We had everything except them brushing their teeth together on FanPop.

Where has all of that gone? I'm still waiting for a picture of Sophia with Austin in Austin, Texas several weeks ago.

What did we have? Sophia on a bike. By herself.

Could've been taken at any time.

Now she says she's in Spain. Where's Austin?

We have those 2 doing the Armpit Snuggle on boats, on the beach, in bars, at friends' houses, at weddings, at restaurants, at weddings, on West Hollywood sidewalks, in muimui's, at weddings, on lawn chairs, and at weddings. They had no problem whatsoever being seen wherever they went. In fact, they couldn't wait to release those pictures from inside Jana Kramer's wedding and reception.

Why is it such a strain now? Why so hard to get a picture of them together holding hands? In Spain? How romantic could you get?

Maybe because I say that Sophia is doing a country song line dance. By herself.

perhaps Mr & Mrs Soapy are in Spain to film, didn't their characters on that crapfest get married? Maybe CW sent them their to film the honeymoon and Mr. soapy tweeted and she didn't because it would be a "spoiler".

It would explain why they haven't tweeted since 10/20, until today when she posted that pic.

I saw a "private" pic of them but it wasn't on fanpop.

They are playing games. again.

Don't know why Anne and Ed was egging Jake on to comment on him and his character and comparing, IMO he didn't go along because the character is a pig and a pussyhound, although a charming one. Jake'e public persona is of a nice guy, vanilla and a perfect BF that wouldn't cheat, He knew that it was bring filmed and didn't want the silly mis quotes popping up on tweet like it at his first Q&A : he doesn't want to work with his sis again which he didn't say, etc. It would sound bad and desperate.

At least that off-color comment he made at Elle didn't go anywhere, a much more private event and he knew it.

And I doubt that Evelyn or anyone else cares that Jake wore that sill bracelet, wouldn't be surprised if they told him to wear it and make sure that it would be seen, but just to a few online fans.
Anything else like a video like it gets better i'm sure Jake said hell no.

the real m said...

The bracelet reminds me of Neal P Harris, who wears them too. He showed Craig Ferguson the one in the shape of a Rooster that he wears because he loves c..k. Though he left the last word as a fill in the blank.

PG, I loved the pictures but my favorite is of the one of all of us having drinks after the interview. Everyone looks great and we are all elated having just seen Jake up close and personal. So glad we had the waitress snap that for us.

Uh, whats the big deal re Austin and Sophia. It is no different than Jake and Reese. A bearding relationship for the cameras. Even Ted says Goose is the one bearding at the moment. I don't care if there are 100 pictures of Sophia and Austin. The couple is Jake and Austin. Everything else is staged.

prairiegirl said...

Thank you, m. I love that one, too.

Exactly, it is as fake as a $2 bill.

And no, it is not eating me up inside.

I know these 2 guys are together. In fact, I think they're hitched.

I know they were in Leadville together.

I think they have a kid together, if not two.

Reeke was fake.

Sophin was fake.

Doesn't change a blessed thing for me.

I'm just so darn glad the trolls absolutely love us so much. They can't stay away. They love the idea of J&A as much as we do, apparently. Why else would they hang around us so darn much, on a Saturday night, no less?

I wondered if they weren't doing some filming for OTH in Spain too, although I'd be surprised if they'd spend that much on the show. Someone recently sent me a chart showing what shows on the networks charge per 30 second ad. I'd say OTH was in the bottom quarter, at $39,000 per 30 second ad. Most shows on CW were in that range, although Vampire Diaries gets more like 80,000. Glee is one of the top shows, at $272,000 per ad; most network hits run $100k to $200k per ad.

Can't believe they renewed OTH, but then I guess they figure it's doing well enough that it's better than having a hole in their schedule.

So let's see, an earring on the left ear means gay so a band on the left arm must also mean gay. Colors must mean something too like yellow probably means.. *cough* okay we better not discuss yellow. The animals must have some activity significance or top/bottom active/receptive message. Anyone know the Silly Bandz language yet?!

I think the surreal m should decipher the code for us all. She decoded that only gay men roll their t-shirt sleeves up (especially when at farmer's market like Jake). Rolled up sleeves are like a signal to all the fruit flies.

Between the pastries at the Orthodox church yesterday and my mom's enchiladas & fideo, plus my aunt's corn last night, then more pastries from the Orthodox church bake sale, I probably ate enough for 2 days yesterday.

Their assortment of cookies, nut breads, baklava's, and spanakopita are my favorites. And my mom's enchiladas......well, they are legendary.

My aunt made a skillet of corn that they had sheared off the cobs and frozen, mixed it with red pepper & onions, plus some cumin. But she said don't use the powdered cumin; you have to take the seed of cumin and crush it with something. Man, that stuff was excellent. My aunts can cook like nobody's business. Most people just don't cook like that anymore. I know I'm all about picking stuff up at the deli, picking up a Smart One or Weight Watchers frozen meal, whatever is quick.

Who has the time & energy to cook after getting off work? Not me.

I am beginning to think Mr. Nichols is in NYC. I think you really did catch him in a lie PG Girl with that airport report.

It was a very weird series ROMA. Both teams have very good pitching. But this was the Giants year. 2008 is still a very sweet memory.

If you take a closer look, Anne seems to have a similar bracelet on her left hand in color green.

Thanks, Tom. I couldn't have done it without...oops. Guess I didn't have anything to do with SF's victory, did I? *grin*

I'm still waiting for the real Lincecum to take that mound. He's a phenomenal pitcher, but has had some bumpy appearances, lately. Of course, the odds makers are already giving the Series to Texas. The Giants are once again relegated to underdog status because the major media outlets typically ignore their existence. I sure hope they can prove the "experts" wrong, one more time. A nail biting playoff to be sure, but the Phils had a great season. No disgrace there.

But they have that backwards because Daryl Hall is the blond. So it should read Hall & Jake Gyllenhaal.

What?! I think you missed the punchline!

Of course, there's no way to see inside of someone's heart, but I can certainly see Jake wanting to participate in Bully Prevention Day by making a statement of solidarity, albeit low key and subtle. The silly bandz option was a perfect way to walk that tight rope without calling too much attention to the gesture. Jake has always been a bit of a shape shifter and revels in ambiguity.

Still, he made a public effort last Wednesday, without trying to hide his right wrist, which he easily could have done by rolling down his sleeves. Certainly not an over the top courageous action, but not completely without merit either.

Anne's brother is gay and she's a big LGBT supporter. I bet it was her idea them wearing those support bracelets.

Oh yeah! LOLLLLLLLL!!!

HAAAA! I see now. snicker. I was thinking they were saying that because of Jake's dark hair and moustache-io. But it's because of his name. LOLLLL!!

Hey, I can be really slow sometimes.

Gee whiz, Tom, you sure changed avatars fast. Off with the Phillies, onward with the Eagles. LOLLLLL!! Uh, remind me not to get into a lifeboat with you, Tom. LOLLLLLL!!

LOL, aw, I'm just kidding. Hey, you want to talk substandard baseball, then we could talk Royals. The best thing about the Royals were the Garlic French Fries in 2009. LOLLL!! No longer available in 2010. >[

No, Tom, in the beginning I wasn't saying Austin was lying. I was buying the Spain story. What I was saying was that I thought he probably hooked up with Jake in NYC because there are no flights out of Wilmy with stopovers in NYC on the way to Barcelona, Spain. And there he was talking about being at LGA. Whaaaa?

But what I'm beginning to wonder now is that YOU may win the big pot on this one. Talk about a big distraction of the Reeke-atude calibur.

Austin may have pulled our chain with this one and he may never have left the States. Jake's been quiet too all weekend. No Tweets of Jakey all weekend.

These boys may have pulled the Levelor Shades over our eyes and they may've been together all weekend for all we know.

No LAX, no LGA pics. No Wilmy Pics. No Sophin Pics.

No Jake tweets. No Sophin tweets.

Smoke from Austin. And Sophia putting herself out there with a solo pic of herself in Spain.

I may have just bought myself a bridge in Barcelona on this one.

LOLLLLLL!!! I would love it. I would give both of those guys a PG High 5 if this is what they did.

What did they get? They got a gargantuan-sized glob of arguing, squabbling & pitbullish snapping over what?

Silly Bandz
Purple vs. Pink
Is she in Spain or isn't she?
BT or BT's
Was Jake picked on as a child?
OTH filming
Craper vs. Crapper
Consultation of Wikipedia
Age slurs

They're probably the ones laughing at all of us.

Don't forget that Jake and Austin are gay. Maybe that might have been the reason. I think Jake was fully aware of Anti-bullying Wednesday.

Did Anne not get the message of what color to wear?

We knew that was coming once Prairie Girl mentioned there were no tweets. Just like clockwork. Really too funny. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how utterly easy it is to manipulate Twitter. I shake my head at what historians will say about us years from now, when footnotes are comprised completely of Facebook and Twitter citations.

What the he'll are you talking about? There are daily flights out of Wilmington to LaGuardia. And since most international flights leave from JFK, Austin would have to make his way there. Which he said he said he was doing. What's the big mystery here, PG?

delta said...

Also flights from NC to Spain involves stop overs, sometime 2.

There are non-stop flights from NC to LGA that would get you there under 2 hours, there are very few non-stop flights from Wilmington, NC to JFK. So By flying from NC to LGA sand then to JFK actually would get him to Spain a lot quicker especially if the flight to Spain from JFK is non-stop.

If it was business related, filming then they had someone book the flight and this was probably the quickest way to get there.

Also not only hasn't Austin tweeted since the 20th, neither has Sophia except for that pic she posted yesterday so maybe they are busy filming.

Sorry about the Phillies loss Tom, but we are sure happy for the Giants. I was wiped out from my trip and slept half the day away so did not watch, but Mr m recorded the game for later viewing. We've been told that visiting our customers will be a big part of 2011 so I need to get my head back into travel mode.

I watched some of the MTV videos a 2nd time. Jake just does not seem happy to me. Even when he smiles there is a sadness is his eyes. I would not be surprised if he moves into another field rather than taking on another film. Cooking, restaurants, school, I don't know what. He seems to have lost his enthusiasm at the moment.
