Bottoms Up

It happened and we missed it, International Cocktail Day, was this past Tuesday.

Well how to celebrate and rectify this oversight?

Maybe the recipe for a Jake Walk cocktail from the The Jake Walk bar in NYC, in Food & Wine's Magazine blog, and reading what Nick Fauchald, Senior Editor wrote to describe The Jake Walk bar, how could it not make a post. Life brings things to you when they are attune, there is no need to hunt them out, they just find you.

"If Stinky Bklyn is Gossip Girl, then the couple’s latest venture, The Jake Walk, is John from Cincinnati. Its name is obscure—“jake walk” is 1930s slang for the partially paralyzed gait exhibited by Prohibition-era vagabonds who drank Jamaica Ginger, a highly alcoholic (though legal) patent medicine found to be loaded with, whoops, neurotoxins—and, like John from Cincinnati, you’re not quite sure how to describe Jake Walk , except for “singularly awesome” (if you disagree with me about JfC, don’t hold it against Jake Walk)."
Mouthing Off/Food &Wine Magazine

The Jake Walk Courtesy of Dan Wondrich (The Jake Walk)
Makes 1 drink
Ice
3/4 ounce reposado tequila
3/4 ounce J.M. Rhum Blanc (or other white rum)
3/4 ounce St-Germain (elderflower liqueur)
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
2 dashes Peychaud's bitters
Candied ginger, for garnish
Fill a shaker with ice. Add everything except the ginger and shake vigorously. Strand into a chilled coupe and garnish with the candied ginger.

Now, you wonder if there's an Austinotsotini to go with it?

For those who missed their Austin Friday, no fear it will be a double shot next week to start and end your work week.

Looks like Jake's grandmother really did die

Anonymous said...

So then Jake's grandmother died over Reeke weekend.

So then Jake's grandmother died over Reeke weekend.

And he didn't go home.

Special K said...

Before you jump to conclusions no one knows anything about what occurred. What you see might not be what is, and the private life of their family is private.

We know that Jake has traveled with noticed before. And the Gyllenhaal family is from the East Coast.

Please do not use this personal and private loss for Jake and his family as way make speculations or comments about what he did or did not do.

Anonymous said...

You're unbelievable, special K. He did not travel that weekend to CA. He was frolicking with Reese in D.C./SC, giddily smiling. Give me a break.

Anonymous said...

I think it says the grandmother died in early May. He was photographed at LAX that weekend if I'm not mistaken.

Special K said...

Grandmother is from Pennsylvania.

Anonymous said...

No I'm wrong it was May 4th that she died and he was in LAX earlier then that.

Special K said...

Again -- this shouldn't really be up for discussion. Can we just let Jake and his family have somethings that are just private.

Anonymous said...

He was at LAX April 21. He was in DC with Reese for Avon when his grandmother was dying...and that's disgusting.
Have to agree with Heath's ghost.

Special K said...

I didn't make it home when my mother died. I guess that makes me disgusting too.

Point is ... you just don't know anything that what you see.

Anonymous said...

Is there anything that Jake does you don't make excuses for, Special? Wait I already know the answer.

Anonymous said...

Special K exactly. You weren't with your fake bf hamming it up for the public were you? that's what makes it disgusting. Not, not being able to make it home.

Anonymous said...

(((Special K)))
Those who know you, know what a wonderful human being you are.
You never disgust me.
Never.

Anonymous said...

WTF?? no one has said that Special K is disgusting....unbelievable! and yes, it's disgusting how posts get twisted around....Sheesh!

Anonymous said...

Since everyone and their dog had a story about how their reaction to the death of a loved one was similar to Jake when Heath died (and now his grandma) I’m very skeptical when reading stuff like this. You don’t need me to believe you anyway so don’t get pissed.
If that really happened to you then I apologize for “of course you didn’t” because it was inappropriate of me and I’m sorry for your loss. As for the rest of my post I stand by it.

You weren't with your fake bf hamming it up for the public were you? that's what makes it disgusting. Not, not being able to make it home.

This is exactly my point. So your experience isn't the same as Jake's.

Anonymous said...

This whole discussion is disgusting. We have no knowledge of what Jake has or hasn't done when his grandmother died and we should just leave it at that.

Anonymous said...

This is just fuel for the fire for the Jake bashers, the continuing and neverending bashers. Don't let that happen here, Special and Wicked.

Anonymous said...

IMO, discussions like this is sometimes very helpful. It quickly reveals the agenda, maturity level and mentality of unfamiliar posters.

Anonymous said...

The point Spesh made in the beginning was that this private, let him have it without turning it to another bash Jake.

Anonymous said...

well... how they ruined a perfectly good post by Special.

Anonymous said...

Hi ((((Special))))!

That Jake Walk drink does sound a little scary - I think I'll stick with my fave Cosmo (made with Grey Goose vodka of course!) to celebrate International Cocktail Day latah!

My sympathies to Jake and his family for their loss. I agree, there's no way we can possibly know what he did, and that shouldn't even concern us. We know that what we see in photos is a small fraction of his life, if those photos, sightings and blurbs in magazines are even true. There's no need to even give the benefit of the doubt IMO because it's something that is his private life. With Heath, it was all such a shock and so unfair, it affected us all, so that was a little different, but even then, there's no real way to know how it affected him. I know I wouldn't want the intrusion of photographers and ridiculous questions on my or my family's private grief.

Anonymous said...

How big would an Austinotsotini be?

destiny said...

I haven't even had my coffee yet, but I sure could use that cocktail now. Unfortunately I don't think I'd make it through work if I had one.

Florida Tom said...

Is what is happening with the filming of Nailed Unusual? It sure seems like the making of this movie has had one problem after another. I sure bet everyone who is working on the film will be happy when it is finished. Seems like it would be hard to make a good film under those conditions.

Jodie Foster is sure getting a lot of press surrounding the apparent breakup with her partner. I have heard several people say they have read about it and then say they didnt even know she was gay. Funny how this couple could be together so long and be so private but then break up and the news is everywhere.

Anonymous said...

" You weren't with your fake bf hamming it up for the public were you? that's what makes it disgusting. Not, not being able to make it home."

Let's face it. The man has completely and totally taken leave of his senses.

He wasn't working in SC 5/4, and he wasn't even doing important charity work. What was he doing? Chaperoning Reese yet again.

And don't tell me that he didn't know about his grandmother's terminal illness. You know when the end is coming for a loved one, and if you can make it (and he had time on his hands and lot's of money for travel), you hightail home as fast as you can. Now, of course, this is his paternal grandmother, and maybe he's estranged from the father.

It's still a mess. The entire Gyllenhaal clan is under a cloud right now. Except for Peter, everyone seems to be floating in the twilight zone.

Special K said...

Condolences to Jake and the Gyllenhaal family in the loss of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

No matter whether our time with them is brief or long, expected or not the loss is still felt. While she may not be here with you any longer, the life she lead and her influence lives within each of you. May the memories of her comfort you.

destiny said...

I think I could get drunk from an Austinotsotini even if it didn't have any alcohol in it.

I am fascinated by the whole thing with Jodie, and I'd sure love to know what the story is, but we may never know. Was the shoutout to her girfriend made in an effort to help the relationship when things were getting tough? Was Cydney tired of the closet, and did Jodie backtrack on a promise with that Parade article and pictures of her frolicking with just the kids in Hawaii?

Wicked said...

Whoa! Tom told me all hell had broken loose and I see that it has. We don't know what Jake may or may not have done regarding his grandmother's death. We don't know what plans the family may have made about this. Everybody handles death differently. I can't judge.

Hi everybody. Great music today. I'm in NYC to visit my family/friends but I thought I would check in. Yikes - drama already??

Special, please don't upset yourself over things that we don't know anything about. Of course we all know that this is a private affair and should be so. My condolences to Jake and his family.

On a lighter note - That drink sounds alittle intense for my tastes - but I will definately have a few Jack and cokes on my trip : )

I just heard about the same sex marriage decision in CA. Great news. I wonder what will happen next.

Have a good day everyone.

Interesting that a random story linked the name Jake to JFC. As to the other comments, I am not touching the topic other than to say be wary of trouble makers. OMG and WFT2 are still a thorn in PRs side.

I'm very proud of CA. Looks like Ellen and Portia will be among the first to marry.

Anonymous said...

WEDDING BELLS: Reese Witherspoon's team continue to firmly deny all those tales of an engagement with Jake Gyllenhaal, but a couple of the actress' friends insist the Oscar winner and her main man have discussed marriage -- and at some length. No ring shopping yet, but there's strong buzz Gyllenhaal may officially pop the question by the end of the year.

Jeese engaged by the end of the year?

It's still a mess. The entire Gyllenhaal clan is under a cloud right now. Except for Peter, everyone seems to be floating in the twilight zone."

I think Maggie is also pretty grounded.

What a shame that this site has become an unconditional Jake worship zone, exactly as Dany predicted it would become.

And why if you're Austin fans, why would you want that sweet, cute guy to still be with Jake, given all the crap with Reese? Doesn't Austin deserve better? Jake isn't the world's best actor and his looks are fading. Austin can do better. Hopefully, he has moved on--and happily with someone who wants him.

Special K said...

Congratulations to Ellen and Portia!

Anonymous said...

Heath's ghost, I will let private family matters remain private.

To my knowledge, Dany never said anything publicly about what OMG would or would not become. If you know differently, it would have to have been said to you privately. And that makes me wonder exactly who you are.

Maggie's career is about to take off, she's respected in the industry and is looking better than ever. She has a healthy daughter and a man who loves her. I think she's doing fine too!

I didn't mean that Jake looks bad thin. I meant that he looks like he is getting back into shape. He's looked heavy to me for a while. Makes me think PoP might be a reality.

Anonymous said...

I think PoP is a reality! ;)

Special K said...

You wonder what is going to happen with all these delays with Nailed and the start of filming PoP. Disney has a really tight schedule for PoP since it is slated for a summer 2009 release.

Special K said...

So the question I really wanted to ask with the post today... what would you put in the perfect Austinotsotini?

Austin Nichols whiskey? Grey Goose Vodka? Texas Pete hot sauces?

Come on amateur mixologists -- what do you think?

london tb said...

Cool, minty things, Spesh.

Or sweet, caramel things.

london tb said...

Jake does look wonderfully slim and gorgeous, but I miss the wheeled bag. Haven't seen it since Toronto :D

The Bad Seed said...

strong buzz Gyllenhaal may officially pop the question by the end of the year.

of course-when thier 2 movies come out, then the 'engagemen' will strtch out to another year [off/on], [by that time reese will have maybe found another guy in rl] and then they will 'breakup' but forever be fond of each other.

Oh Man, someone posed the question once: what kind of drink does the band named Silversun Pickups inspire? So I thought something like a Tequila Sunrise with Patron Silver Tequila and orange juice, and a splash of grenadine or cranberry juice. But for Austin, how about an Austin Sunrise Martini, with Grey Goose Vodka, orange juice and a splash of grenadine or cranberry juice, with a twist of orange peel. :)

Special K said...

New Pics -- The toothpicks are back!!

Pssss! Here's more strong Gyllenhaal-related buzz - Nailed is a colossal mess and Jake's trying to get out of it.

Now, isn't it more fun to talk about a non-existent marriage proposal?

Anonymous said...

Hi Tea! Or should I say Coffee and Constructive Sublimation Poster.

How about a blood orange mojito--orange with a bit of mint and a lot of run. And I'll take some olives and an order of those spanish style potatoes. :-)

Anonymous said...

Oops, shoulda used spell-check! Let me fix that "r" in the neon sign. There, that's better!

Since we have an Austin Martini - we gotta have The Jake Gyllenhaal martini (otherwise knows as Dreamy Blues). Something tells me this would have been a good substitue for the Aqua Velva in Zodiac: ;)

INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 oz white creme de cacao
1 1/2 oz blue curaçao

PREPARATION:
Pour the creme de cacao into a well-chilled cocktail glass.
Float the blue curaçao on top. :)

Anonymous said...

Jake gets the cream.
LMAO

What a week for Jake. His movie has been shut down a 2nd time, his beard's crew is spreading rumors about a marriage proposal(feeling the noose tighten, eh?) and he just found out he can marry the love of his life. Take some time to think. Make the right decision, Jake.

Seeing those pictures of Jake at LAX...I like to project, but he looks ready to flip over a piece of furniture and say "fuck it" to everything. I know, wishful thinking, but he does have his - what I now call them - "'give a shit" jeans on. Ha.

Anonymous said...

^^Oh I love those jeans - but I guess I couldn't blame him for looking a little PO'd about the Nailed situation -

Raise our glasses to CA, and Ellen and Portia, and to another certain couple! Cheers!
