Island Screening

Well Jake it seems was still on The Vineyard, as of last week, according to the NY Daily News He, Maggie and Peter went down to road to check out what was playing at the Chilmark Community Center.

On Wednesday, Caroline Kennedy, "Jarhead" star Jake Gyllenhaal, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard checked out "The Tillman Story," Amir Bar-Lev's documentary about the death of pro-football-player-turned Army Ranger Pat Tillman that hits theaters this month. The film, which looks into the military's cover-up of Tillman's death from friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004, was hosted by Russell Baer, a soldier in Tillman's platoon, at the Chilmark Community Center in Martha's Vineyard. And a source at the screening tells us that Jake, hung around "to meet Baer" after the screening.

ESPN did an incredible story about Pat and friend Russ back in 2006.

"One day, God willing, Russell Baer was going to tell his son this story. One day, after the boy's heart and brain had healed, he was going to point to that picture on the kid's bedroom shelf of the man doing a handstand on the roof of a house, take a deep breath and say, Mav, that's a man who lived a life as pure and died a death as muddy as any man ever to walk this rock, and I was there for both. That's the man, when your heart stopped for an hour and they slit you open neck to navel, who I prayed to because ... well, because you wouldn't exist if he hadn't died, and I wouldn't be half of who I am if he hadn't taught me how to live. That's Pat Tillman, the man you take your middle name from, and I've been waiting for you to ask since the day you were born.

Russ never got that chance: Maverick Patrick Baer died on Monday. So now Russ has Pat's story stuck in his heart...."

..."Russ missed the stress debrief. As the Tillmans' closest platoon mate, he was chosen to escort Kevin on a flight to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, to stare for hours at that refrigerated coffin. The two men flew in silence, Russ under orders to say nothing about the incident, "until we get the facts," and Kevin still assuming that the enemy had killed his brother, too stunned and grief-stricken to ask Russ for details.

Dread began to boil inside Russ. In a few days he'd be representing the U.S. Army at Pat's memorial service, the lone Ranger there who'd been anywhere near Pat when he was killed, facing Pat's family and friends ... under a gag order. He was willing to defy that order, to clean latrines for the rest of his life for the sake of Pat's family, but he knew bullets were hissing everywhere that day ... what if the conclusions he'd drawn were somehow wrong? What if he told Pat's mom that her son had been blown away by his own men and suddenly found himself in a media firestorm, only for Army investigators to uncover evidence proving otherwise? On the saddest day of his life, he was going to have to squirm and evade the people who loved Pat most.

All he wanted to do, in those few days at his grandmother's house before Pat's service, was sleep, find the bottom of a few beer bottles and stare into space, but his cousin yanked him out of bed and dragged him to -- of all places -- the Sunshine Saloon Sports Bar in Pleasanton, Calif. A young woman named Tammy Wright happened to be sitting at a table there, and though in a mood to meet no one, Russ met the love of his life on a night when he would've been 7,500 miles away if Pat hadn't died. Funny, Pat had told Russ that his old girlfriend was all wrong for him."

Here's an article in Newsweek that talks about the documentary and General McChyrstal's retirement.

"Bar Lev points his finger directly at McChrystal for perpetuating what the Tillman family believes is a massive, ongoing cover-up."

"After Tillman's death, McChrystal, who doesn't appear in the film, was involved in the decision to award Tillman a posthumous Silver Star for valor, based on the report that he had died under enemy fire. McChrystal then sent a memo to several top generals and to White House personnel warning that there might be questions about Tillman's death and cautioning speechwriters against making direct reference to what happened the day Tillman died in President Bush's speech for the White House Correspondents' Dinner."

I really want to see this movie. The story about Tillman always hits me right in the guts. I was already feeling weepy because my 18year-old nephew's army unit is shipping out to Afghanistan today. :(

I'm both mad at him and very proud of him for what he's doing.

On the subject of Dawn.

Here's a tip that some may know, I certainly did not but it is an authentic claim.

How to unclog a toilet without plunging? Dawn.

I'm not kidding.

Pour some Dawn down your toilet and let it sit for an hour. Then you can either just flush it or pour a good amount of really hot/boiling water and then flush it.

Voila!! I'm not joking. Absolutely no plunging.

How about Aqua Velva Man or just Aqua Velva for short? We get the water imagery as well as the "after shave" bearding analogy. Plus, Aqua Velva is a vodka-based cocktail to acknowledge Grey Goose (1 oz vodka. 1 oz gin. 1 oz Blue CuraƧao.) The whole concoction is mixed together and served with an umbrella. *wink* Also, since Jake has reminded us that Mr. Bubbles is already taken (LOL), we can have another Jake connection, instead. In the movie, Zodiac an Aqua Velva was supposedly Robert Graysmith’s favorite drink.

If the name's too long, we could just call him "Suds," "Frothy," or "Spumy." "Lather Up" would be cool too. Okay, I'm cracking myself up, now. Maybe a poll can be taken? :-)

Soapy and Suds does have a ring to it, though. Then again, I like the ridiculous picture of Soapy and Lather Up. Okay, I'll stop now.

It has been a journey. Just finished yesterday of over a week and a half of helping friends out watching their dogs. 3 different sets. I come home and wham! My laptop got infected. A really maddening virus, too because what it did was it attacked any anti-virus you tried to merely open up and use to quarantine it.

So since it was Sunday and I was frantic about my story getting wiped out, I took it to Geek Squad against my best judgment. Because my normal gurus are not open on Sunday and I thought time was of the essence.

Ha! What a joke that Geek Squad is. They ream you. They charge double what my usual people do. And they tell you that it'll be 1-3 days to get it back to you. And my gurus (and I told that guy this over the phone and at the Check In Desk) will get my laptop done in 4 hrs. That idiot said, "And what tools do they use?" I said don't you worry about what tools they use. They do an excellent job and they fix it. And they spend time with me showing me all kinds of things. I bent the ear of the check in guy and the guy on the phone. But they took it well. I wasn't mean or anything; but I let them know that my people beat them in price, in service and in turnaround time. And that they had me by my you-know-whats because they were the only ones open on Sunday. I told them I need to go back to college and learn how to do this stuff myself as much as it's happened to me.

Anyway, I didn't realize it was going to take that long. I was not happy. But the happy news (for me) is that I just called them and it's done. I'm never googling anything again.

Well, not really but I tell you what. I'm going to be alot more careful or else I'm not playing on my computer on Sundays. lol. Because I am not going to Geek Squad again.

Well, back to lunch. I vote for any of those soapy names.

I refuse to comment re: Austin's parents comment on Soapy's crowdrise on the grounds that they're civiian and I won't do that.

But you can imagine what my opinion on it is. I'm going to heap 100% of the blame on Austin because 1) it's his issue to begin with and darned if I would involve a family member in my own deception, thus he is tainting their hands as well and 2) All he has to do is put his foot down and not involve them.

It's your issue? You handle it. You have the guts to handle it yourself and don't dirty family members' hands.

I have a few comments about the whole deal of Kay and David leaving a message to Sophia. I’m going to split it up in a few posts, cause it’s really long.

1.)
Kay and David also left a message on Austins page.
While it sounds somewhat more sincere, it's also much shorter.

Austin, You are so awesome! In spite of all the fan mail....WE ARE your biggest fans. We are glad to be able to help keep those waves rolling and keep 'em clean. M & D

Frankly, I do find it weird to leave a longer message lauding your sons gf (even throwing in digs at your son) than your own son.
Then you have the fact that the donators name to Sophia and Global Green is "Kay & David Nichols" but to Austin there is a donation from "David & Kay Nichols" as well as "Kay and Dave Nichols", meaning they donated under three different names. And in not one did they link to a website that might enable people to at least somehow verify it's them despite owning a website.

1/4

Stubborn TB said...

2.)
They might have very well been told to write a nice message to Sophia after they had the gall to leave a message to Austin a day earlier. But with the differences in the donator names, I do wonder if someone saw the message on Austins page (whether real or not) and decided that Sophia needed to get an acknowledgement too and just did it themselves. I can much more buy that someone saw the message on Austins first comment page 6 days ago and decided to post the same for Sophia and then wait 5 days to make it look real.

2/4

Stubborn TB said...

3.)
Either way it was definitely meant to be spread. Both comments were posted not on Sophia and Austins main pages but on one of their fundraiser pages. Even if someone saw their names on the donor page for Sophia they would still have to have gone back almost 10 pages on one of her four fundraiser pages to find the comment. Somehow that just makes no sense, would you really first go through god knows how many pages on her main page AND all her fundraiser pages in the hope that they left a comment and the run right out and post it on OMG? A google search only returns the donations, not any comments and even then it links to the main page and you have to find the right comment.
Whoever posted it here also to make sure that we definitely read their message before we even knew what it was about. Crowdrise has the donors names first and the message they left after that. But on OMG there was the comment first and then the donators names.

3/4

Stubborn TB said...

On another note, Sophia is still busy rewriting history. She left this comment on the Global Green site:
Thanks guys! The video with Rhona was great! But you should really thank Austin! I was going to start crowd rise on the weekend when there was more time to sit with it, and he said "let's just do it now!" Gotta love that man's boundless energy! :) I got started two days earlier than planned, and look what's happened!

Now for everyone that isn't a little voice and/or can read, we know that Austin started his crowdrise page 2 days earlier than Sophia and she just did what she's always doing and copied him. But nice touch to not only try to get a couples mention in, but to also hijack his idea.

Oh, and Jack? Don't bother telling me I'm a Hausfrau or whatever stupid thing you can think of. I know better than you what those "insults" mean.

Methodical Muser said...

Great analysis, Stubborn, regardless of Crowdrise trying to cover their tracks. I never bothered to look at Soapy's pages so I'm glad someone had the intelligence and perserverance to do so. Let's see. I wonder who would be so motivated to go back and search all those Twitter pages. Obviously, someone with a certain straight agenda. And, the way the names are listed differently is quite interesting, as well. The script is the same. Including, Soapy's need to one-up, Aust10 on everything. Being obnoxious, must be in the job description for bearding.

destiny said...

It doesn't matter to me why something relating to Jake and Austin gets mentioned here. Yes, someone with a particular viewpoint or agenda might be more diligent in finding things, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone associated with J&A didn't sometimes post things here. But people also post things here to let us know what is going on, to discuss them, because it is interesting, etc.

Methodical Muser said...

But people also post things here to let us know what is going on, to discuss them, because it is interesting, etc.

No denying that, but the subterfuge is more than a coincidence, I would suspect. We already know the whole twittering escapade has been implemented as a promotional tool. And, I don't mean just to ship OTH, but to promote the idea of happily ever after S&A and also to provide cover for Austin's real whereabouts. Bringing his family in on this is just as bad as when Jake had his mother, sister and brother involved in that whole Roman Wedding fiasco.

destiny said...

I can understand why people think it's not right to discuss "civilians". However, I personally think that if Austin's parents do something like posting on a very public site like they did then it is fair game for discussion.

At the end of the day, it's clear that Jake and Austin's families have no problem lying for them and promoting the bearding. People can't chose their parents, and it is beginning to look to me like J&A haven't fallen far the tree if their families see nothing wrong with all this.

Stubborn TB said...

know most people here don't care and roll their eyes when I start talking about Bomer, but I can't help thinking of his interview in Houston magazine that is floating around out there, because he talks about the values he learned growing up, and not putting work first.

I also thought of it in our discussion about how open J&A are in HW, because Bomer makes it clear that even if he's not talking about his personal life, everyone he knows knows about him.

Now I know he's in a glass closet, but to me there is world of difference between not talking about your personal life and lying about it. I can't help thinking not only would his dad not lie for him, he'd probably kick his ass if Bomer lied.

destiny said...

Here are the quotes I had in mind:

“Maybe it’s because my parents are very strong Christians and have a really firm set of morals,” he adds, “but it was always ingrained in me that you never based your ego on what you do, or what happens to you. I never started thinking, ‘Oh God, I’m it, man.’ But I started to believe in myself on some level.”
..........

But now that Collar is more established, as is Bomer, can he talk more freely about his personal life? ...........

“No, because it’s personal,” he says with a laugh. “There are a lot of reasons. He says this with great confidence and self-assurance; it’s something he’s clearly given thought to. “In terms of the profession in general, it’s not anything I’m afraid of,” Bomer continues. “Anyone who knows me, knows me—including everyone who’s on that set right around the corner. But when I look at actors onscreen, my favorites are the ones I can watch without thinking of the picture I just saw of them in the tabloids doing X, Y or Z. I can just get invested in the storytelling process.”

But it must be difficult, one might suggest, to avoid sharing the basic biographical information other actors mention so freely.

"No, it’s really not,” he says. “I don’t feel shut in, or cramped, or that I hide anything in my life. I’ve lived my life very openly and honestly, and that’s how I like it. I go to work, and sit down with you and other people in the media and talk about things that have to do with the job, and I go home and have my real life. It’s a whole separate entity that I get to enjoy, and it gives me proper perspective on the billboards and subway signs and magazine covers and all that. It prioritizes my life.”

Interesting the different ways of listing their names. And I would've thought on Austin's, they'd sign Mom & Dad. Aren't you always Mom & Dad to your kids? I do have a friend who calls her mom by her first name. It sounds so weird. And she's not her stepmom, she's her biological mom.

That's great he can do that; I can't and won't. Especially if it's someone who has alot of verbal baggage swirling around like Mel Gibson. To go watch anything he's in, directing or producing at this point is something I won't even consider.

For me, things just always aren't so cut & dried, black & white. And I must have a decent amount of company in this regard because otherwise there wouldn't be any need for PR companies who specialize in damage control.

You're misunderstanding Bomer's quote. He's basically saying that it's better when an actor's picture is NOT in the tabloids all the time because then he is NOT thinking about it when he watches them onscreen.

And by the time he does his first summer's over, back to school photo op, we'll be back to dark jeans and school uniform chinos. Bland-colored, baggy shirt.

**heavy sigh**

It is really hard to describe what Jake had in these kinds of pictures that so many of today's newer crop don't. I don't know what you call it; adequate words fail me. Because I think there are some great looking guys on that True Blood just from looking at pictures on JJ. Even Rob Pattinson rather appeals to me with his short hair look from Water for Elephants.

But Jake could come out of a store just like this, not even trying to look any certain way, and he rocked a combination of looks in a way that they just don't. And there could be young people reading this so I won't go into some of these looks. lol.
SOAS comes to mind. I don't think that's really a true acronym, but now it is.

My sister's boss can't stand feet. She says that he hates it when the girls wear sandals or paint their toenails so they've always done it in the past just to give him the heebie jeebies. Our big, big mgr at work doesn't allow sandals in the front office but that's because of safety reasons. What on earth can happen to one's bare feet in an office is beyond me. If a filing cabinet is going to fall on your foot, I don't think a loafer is going to really help, you know what I mean?

And I always poke fun at a friend's feet because she has a big hammer-like big-toe. And she trims the nails reaaaaal short. It cracks me up. My cube mate - she doesn't like much at all to do with feet.

But, LOLLLLL, the reason for all the feet talk is since I'm on such a shallow, obssessed, rambling thought streak is it just occurred to me that you don't see Jake in bare feet much anymore. People's feet are all very different and it's hard to find attractive ones, don't you think?

Just makes me wonder if his feet are as pristine as his hands. lol.

Alright, alright!!! TMI, I know.

Here's a funny. This came up during dinner one night. My friend with the large big toes, she said she didn't actually ever scrub her feet in the shower. She figured that as the soap & water ran down, they kind of washed her feet anyway.

LOLLLL! Everyone gave her a hard time over that logic. Oh, M&M, you say you don't scrub yours either? OOps, sorry. No, I'm just kidding!

SOL (snicker out loud). I better go and quit looking at that Macy's picture.

I have never understood why people get so freaked out about feet.
I would die if I couldn't wear sandals in the summer--heck, outside of work I wear them practically year round.

I know but boy, I guess my sister's boss sure does. And my cubemate, too, doesn't like to hear anything about feet. I remember when my little buddy worked up here and something happened to one of her toes. She started getting a little graphic and it was freaking out our co-worker. lol.

Now, I will say I have seen some heels during the summer that would exfoliate a loofah. LOLLLLLLL.

And unlike fingers, people's feet can be very individualistic.

Mentally preparing for watching rotten little Jingles this coming weekend. And next week is a week of Big V but I'm going to be spending the middle of it helping to watch my niece & nephew while their parents report in to teach. Pfffft! There went the vacay of writing.

So would I - I love getting pedicures, beautiful nailpolishes and shopping for shoes and boots. When I see people barefoot, it connotes a sense of being carefree and an individualist, of freedom. The bones of the feet are quite beautiful, really. Hooray! :)

I also wear sandals as soon as I can and up until the first snow flies!
Have you ever seen Da Vinci sketches of the human foot? Gorgeous. And baby's little feet are the most adorable thing.

Daddy takes me to the doggie spa for nail trims, regularly. I make believe I hate it so he always makes sure to stop by The Three Dog Bakery to get me my favorite treats. He's such a pushover. But, I have lovely paws.

With all the walking I do, that is me if I don't go in regularly for a pedicure, and love nail polish, but for the feet only. Polish on the fingers is a losing proposition for me as I ruin them in about 24 hours.

If I could find waterproof socks I would probably wear sandals in the snow. I know socks and sandals are a fashion no-no, but I hate closed in shoes that much.

ITA. Flip-flops are a godsend. I don't polish my nails on my hands much, unless it's a french manicure or pale polish. My feet I adorn. I'd wear sandlas all year long too if I could. And footprints in the sand are beautiful. :)

Two words, Destiny: Gold Bond.

That foot cream is awesome. My feet take a beating because of my walking but boy, that stuff is a miracle.
