Out Spotlight XXXXVI

Today's Spotlight focuses on the Native American tribes and homosexuality.

In Native American history this is recognition of those called Two Spirits which could be seen as homosexuality in their culture. Now one tribe's stepped up to show their support of the gay members of their nation.

In August of this year the Coquille Indian Tribe on the southern coast of Oregon, a recognized federally sovereign nation within the United States, not bound by state of Oregon's constitution, recognize allowing same sex marriage among its members.

"The Coquilles (which tribal leaders prefer to pronounce KO-kwell) are probably the first tribe in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage", said Brian Gilley, a University of Vermont anthropology professor and author of the book, Becoming Two-Spirit: Gay Identity and Social Acceptance in Indian Country.

Because the Coquilles have federal status, a marriage within the tribe would be federally recognized. That would violate the Defence of Marriage Act, a law that says the federal government "may not treat same-sex relationships as marriages for any purpose."

The federal government could challenge the Coquille law as a way of testing the limits of tribal independence. The tribe has concluded that the Defense of Marriage Act may bar the tribe from conferring federal benefits or money on same-sex spouses, but understand the risks of their actions.

The new law establishes tribal rules for recognizing marriage, whether for gay or heterosexual couples. It will not take effect until the tribe also creates laws for divorce and child custody according to their tribal attorney. The seven-member tribal council expects to adopt such laws next year.

Historically homosexuality have been recognized by many tribes, but the Coquille Nation is the first and tribe to support gay marriage. Both the Cherokee and the Navajo, (the largest Native American tribe)Nations have banned same sex marriages.

The term "Two-Spirit" refers to a belief among some tribes that there are people who manifest both masculine and feminine spiritual qualities. According to Native American scholars, many tribes once revered Two-Spirits, viewing them as a third gender with a special spiritual connectedness. In these tribes, Two-Spirits filled important tribal roles as counselors, storytellers and healers.

This belief, scholars have also observed, has been eroded in many places by the imposition of Judeo-Christian views of homosexuality as sinful.

"Homophobia was taught to us as a component of Western education and religion," Navajo anthropologist Wesley Thomas has written. "We were presented with an entirely new set of taboos, which did not correspond to our own models and which focused on sexual behavior rather than the intricate roles Two-Spirit people played. As a result of this misrepresentation, our nations no longer accepted us as they once had."

Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits (BAAITS) is a six-year-old nonprofit that offers support and activities to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Native Americans. Similar groups exist in Oklahoma, Colorado and Minnesota. BAAITS and other groups are trying to help the Native American Nations to reconnect with Two Spirits and homosexuality within the 800 tribes in the United States.

The Coquille Nation is stepping forward with their acceptance of same sex marriage.

Ken Tanner, chief of the Coquilles said: "Native Americans are sensitive to discrimination of any kind. For our tribe, we want people to walk in the shoes of other people and learn to respect differences. Through that, we think we build a stronger community."

Hi Spesh - no problem. What a wonderful Out Spotlight today - you've definitely outdone outdone yourselves today. I have always found Native American culture fascinating and beautiful since I was a child, its views of the world, and the acceptance and equal place in society for all of its members, and the attitude to the environment, taking their cue from the nature around them, that they are a part of it, and have gratitude for its bounty, not to dominate and exploit it. Two Spirit is the lovliest way to see a gay, bisexual or transgendered person.

I just skimmed the post, but I got so excited I had to comment. I'm going to really enjoy reading this in depth.

I wasn't able to find a copy of My Beautiful Laundrette, but I have seen it and loved it.

Have a great Sunday, all!

I've read about the Two Spirit Concept. And western culture has often had a negative impact on how sexuality is viewed in other cultures. A similar thing happened in India with the British.

However I didn't know that a Native American tribe has decided to allow gay marriages. The implications regarding federal recognition is fascinating. Somewhere down the road someone is going to challenge the federal government's refusal of benefits, as I'm sure will happen, and it will probably reach the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is a real mixed bag when it comes to this topic, e.g., the ruling not allowing Native Americans to use peyote in religious ceremonies.

Wow thanks for the Spot Light today. Interesting. Hope (if they keep going with it) it blows up the anti same sex marriage laws resistance. Its suprising that the backers of No On Prop 8 are the traditonally conservatives like Teachers Unions, League of Women Voters, Mexican/Black Groups and Farm Laborers. Lets hear it for a small tribe of Oregon American Indians.

Special K said...

One of the biggest group of contributors on the No on Prop 8 front, have been members of the Church of Latter Day Saints and not just from California, but from all over the U.S. They are responsible for 77 % of the funding for the No on 8.

Prop 8 wants to turn around the new law and make same sex marriage ILLEGAL. Special I think you meant LDS is the biggest group of contributors on the YES on Prop 8. Its confusing I know. Like I said before the No On Prop 8 groups (the ones who want to KEEP THE NEW SAME SEX MARRIAGE LAWS LEGAL) are traditional conservatives like Teachers Unions, League of Women Voters, the Nurses Union, Mexican Lawyers Group, Black Police Organizations and Farm Laborers. Who woulda thunk it. Attitudes are changing. It might be close but METHINKS (deal with it LOL) Prop 8 will lose and same sex marriage will stay in California.

Well, if Jake and Reese's pr and management take note of what people on the web are saying they certainly aren't going to like this;

oh no they didnt

I just can't see how this fauxmance can be seen to be generating good publicity. If i were Jake (or Reese for that matter) I'd be suing whoever talked me into this.

Hey, everybody! The Sportsman's Friend is back, lol. Survived. Crawled on my knees back to my laptop and with shaking hands, plugged it back in, and .....
nawwww, not really. Just about.

No, not really. Hey Chris, you're back! Where've you been. I knew it was going to take another Reeke Adventure Gadabout to get some o you's out from the woodwork. You all did not do a good job of keeping "them" at bay while I was gone, did you? I had to sift through all of that Flynet Garbo and what a Halloween Boofest that was.

This is going to take several long posts, I'm afraid, so for those of you who find me extremely boring sorry, feel free to scroll through, Collect $200, pass GO, and etc. etc. etc. I have alot to say tonight, I think.

1st off, when I'm wrong, I admit I"m wrong, even if it's 15-20 years later, or 2 weeks. I correct myself on 2 things: 1) Lily, I stand corrected. I have seen Vogue in two places that I said you wouldn't. Walgreens and Wally World (W-Mart). Now granted, it was on the bottom row at both counters (not primetime, eye-level view), but it was there. Ding!Prairie Girl, sit down & take a seat!
and 2) Clarity, I believe I thought you lived in NY, but I see you don't. I knew that; I forgot that I had checked out your blog once and I had a braincramp. Oh, and I see you changed your avatar of ol' Sloop John B - very nice!!
Uh, that takes care of two corrections that are known, anyways.

Next, the camping. London, thanks for for your good wishes. I had a GREAT time. I was kind of/pretty nervous about it as you can tell by my comments on here just prior to leaving. It was actually a birthday present that my childhood friend had given me years ago but just for whatever reason had not come to pass yet. She lives right next to a state park in Vassar, KS, and that's where we camped out in her Dad's 5th-wheeler. There were quite a few other campers there and it was so neat the way alot of them decorated their trailers/campsites with spider webs, light up pumpkins, bone-shaped lights strung between the trees, orange lights in the windows, and other fall decorations. These people don't fool around - they bring a little bit of home with them when they go camping. There was outdoor patio furniture, pieces of outdoor carpeting outside their doors, dogs all over the place, cable satellites set up, fall tablecloths, horseshoe competitions, lots of laughter, shouts whenever the Chiefs scored TD's today, and greetings between campers who knew each other. I'll take with me the sounds of big diesel trucks/SUV's tires crunching along the gravel everytime someone arrived or left, the glow of campfire light from all the firepits around, the smell of our hamburgers/hot dogs as they cooked on the grill, the beauty of the glistening lakewater, the ugliness of the huge carp fish as the nextdoor kids fed them, the smell of bacon cooking as my friend served up scrambled eggs, bacon & toast in the morning, the taste of gooey marshmallows & the glow of them burning as mine kept catching fire & my first reaction was always to shake my stick instead of blowing them out, the soft sounds of chatter as people sat around their campfire, just staring at it, poking at the wood once in awhile to keep the glow going, and the fun of meeting Paco, Itty Bit, and Princess, the miniature & toy fox terriors who belonged to Camper Bob & his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and kids who were camping next to us.

We actually had a shower & great water pressure. I got to sleep in the big bed with the electric blanket and these campers are really cool. You have a stove, microwave, fridge, freezer, everything. And alot of people had TV's. What a life! How relaxing. We just talked & talked & talked & stared at the campfire, lol!! Looked at catalogs & read just a little bit. And talked. And stared at the campfire. It was fantastic!

Hi Destinyyy! Thanks for your tip on saving my posts. I'll have to see if I can do that in the mornings. You know ol' Special. She With The Hook that Can Yank At Any Given Moment!! lol

Special K said...

You know ol' Special. She With The Hook that Can Yank At Any Given Moment!! lol

Hey now! You know we try to delete as little as possible. It is only when people are being personally attacked or something extremely offensive.

prairiegirl said...

No, Special! I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about when I've posted a couple times early in the morning and, well, you know me, I take a long time to get my stuff typed, and sometimes by the time I hit "Post Comment" you've disabled the day's thread and I've lost my comment. That's what I'm talking about. Lol! Yes, you the Lady With the Hook!!

Special, nice point on the somewhat empty bag. In one of the pictures on JustJared, I thought I could see the outline of something in there, but it was a small something. I don't even know why the store clerk messed around putting it in one of those bags. The bag isn't even folded out; that's what is so stupid about it.

So I have this great escape weekend, all rejuvenated & relaxed from the Great Outdoors and I come back to this another onslaught of Reekitude.

You know what? If anything at all, I am so down because this brings you guys so down. You all have been on this website & following this guy alot longer than I have and I hate to see people like Wicked, Clarity, Destiny, & London so disappointed and thoroughly....I don't want to use the word disgusted (that's kind of strong, huh?) I don't know what word to use, but you know what I mean. So deflated. It is disheartening. It's hard. I actually think I'm becoming a little numb to it, lol. It's not bothering me quite so much. Yet.

But then, I've not seen any of the pictures of him with Deacon, either. When I see those, I reckon I'll want to spew off a few words.

prairiegirl said...

They don't even look like a hot couple in love. Those pictures of them together - what is up with the one of them holding hands. Who holds hands like that? Their hands are raised in the air and they're not even in a true handholding clasp. It's downright bizarre. The rest of the pictures are like looking at any Dick & Jane walking down the sidewalk of Anytown, USA.

You know something. I know I've beaten to death several times the issue about the clothes Jake has picked and how most of the time Reese doesn't seem to dress up for him at all. If anything, she looks fantastic & chic when she's not with him. I honestly think there is something psychological at work here.

I have seen alot of pictures of Jake dressed so much more sharply, even when he's just walking down a sidewalk. He has his share of casual dress, the workout clothes, the jeans & T, stuff like that. But he's also been in nice slacks & alot of cotton, button down shirts or pullover tops. I can't even remember the last time he's dressed like that.

To me, this constant blend of drab blues and greys is very revealing. This total lack of color in his wardrobe seems to be saying there is a lack of color in him. In his life and in his outlook right now. Clothes reveal alot about a person. Surely there has been a day(s) when you've gotten ready for work and your mood is just blase'. You throw on something and even though it's clean, it is just kind of "whatever." You just don't put an extra effort into it. He's looking like this just about all the time now. There are no bright colors, no new-looking clothes, no nice slacks, no well-groomed look to him at all. I think it is saying alot about something. And I don't think it is good self-esteem or a good feeling place where he's at. I really don't.

Let me add my thanks Special for another great and enlightening Out Spotlight. Our aboriginal people have a much more generous interpretation of the human condition as it applies to their gay citizens. We have always had much to learn from them and I pray we can continue to do so.

Well, last comment of the night. I've got to hit the hay - tomorrow's going to be a real jolt to my system after having 1/2 day off Friday and then a real escape weekend.

Well, after having gandered at the pictures on IHJ of the Brentwood walkabout, I can see why it's been pretty quiet here today. Nothing like another PhotoOp except this time with a child exploitation to send your fans screaming towards the exits, Jake.

Man.

Number 1, glad to see someone in PR took my words to heart about never seeing Jake holding the hands of either of the children. But you know what, PR? You're going to have to rehearse this some more or do better coaching. The child is supposed to look like they're enjoying it. They're supposed to swing the arms back & forth, back & forth, back & forth. And alot of times, there is skipping involved because children in this age range cannot walk in a straight path for squat. And there's supposed to be some conversation going on. And the adult is supposed to look down at the child and smile & converse. Maybe point something of interest out with his finger. These are called signs of a child's happiness & affection and feeling comfortable with someone. Because that's the only reason my nephew/niece want to hold hands if it's on a sidewalk; when it's out of love. Otherwise, it's only when you're ini the parking lots and crossing streets that the kids really want to do this. So, Jake is striking out on all 3 fronts as far as I can see here. Deacon looks uncomfortable and as unused to doing this as h---.

Grade on Believability: F

Hi Prairie Girl! You said Reeke were holding hands? They aren't. She was giving hima toothpick.

Ok I need to get a life haha. It bothered me about the pic dates if the breakfast was Sat or Thurs. Pretty sure it was Thurs: #1 Celebs usually avoid out in public on w/e #2 Hardly anyone else is around in the background, like a weekday AND MOST IMPORTANT #3 Jake's beard. He can grow hair fast but not that fast. His face hair is longest in the LAX pics, same in breakfast, maybe shorter in jogging but definately shortest in the Deacon pics. The Deacon pics were taken last unless Jake's real name is Rapunzel.

There was already the Heathrow (Tues/Weds), jogging (Thurs/Fri) then Deacon Birthday (Fri/Sat) pics overloaded so the Breakfast ones were dated for sites to release on another day (Sat/Sun) to spread the PR love around. Good on Just Jared for not paying attention to instructions or being honest with dates, take your pick. LOL

prairiegirl said...

Plus, I see we have an extension of the blue/grey line.

That whole Brentwood set of pictures was kind of disturbing for some reason. There's something going on there that doesn't look like it's a happy event. Jake holds Deacon's hand the same exact way he holds Reese's. And I'm trying to figure out why these 2 are in a constant state of working out. They're constantly dressed like they just jogged off the nature trail.

Heavy sigh. I certainly hope the end is near. If Jake has a great thing going on the side with Austin & BT, it is not showing at all. I don't think you can turn something like that on or off with the flick of a switch. Parts of your life seep into other parts; it's inevitable. You cannot keep everything going on in your life tidily & neatly separate like a sectioned Chinet plate. You just can't. Not parts as serious as a lover & surrogate child from your other life as a hetero lover meshing with the lover's children.

And I will bring up again the damage being done to the kids. I don't care if he is being introduced as "Uncle Jake" or "Mommy's friend". You're not giving children enough credit. Children, even very young children, are very smart, don't think that they can't see things for what they truly are.

Children will astound you with some of the things they say and observations that they make. They know when something isn't quite right. They're going to wonder why their "readymade" family doesn't do all the family-like things that their other friends' families do. Why they don't see the true affection between Jake & their mom. Why they don't see Jake except when cameras are around. And when the cameras are around, they are then asked to "hold Mommy's friend's hand" for a nice stroll down the sidewalk.

And while all this is going on, we are to believe that his own child is isolated from him. For the good of that child's future so they can live a comfortable life. I bet that child would rather be lifted up into the air by Jake's arms and smiled at on a sunny Saturday than to enjoy a nice 5-bedrooom house in the best of neighborhoods with all the finest things in life. And to be seen with his Dad than to be hidden and felt like he/she needed to be hidden.

This is the biggest crime being commited now. It's more than just Jake not being true to himself. This is now involving children. Reese's and supposedly his own with Austin or whoever. Give Reese's kids some credit. They will remember this. And it's not going to be a phase in their Mommy's life. A "friend" that they had for a little while. Kids get hurt. And they'll remember. Reese & Jake really don't realize what they're doing at this point. They can't or they would have the guts to look at each other & their handlers and say "I'm not doing this anymore. It stops now."

And to think that on Friday afternoon, things looked so wonderful. Walking through my park, perfectly crisp temperatures, sun shining & the trees in absolutely brilliant fall splendor, walking backwards (yes backwards) to Chris Tomlin's "Not To Us", just an outstandingly uplifing song to walk backwards to, holding arms outward & singing for all it was worth, wrapped up in feeling so good about my surroundings, and then to see this kind of waste of energy going on. It's, well, it's just so disappointing.

Guys, I hope this thing ends soon because it's lonely here tonight. I missed out on all the action yesterday, but hey, it was such a wonderful time where I was at. Let's hope that both Jake and Reese come to their senses. No one can be "owned". We all have our own mind & our own beliefs. And it's up to us to speak up & stand up for what we believe and are or aren't going to do. I think Ted was insinuating in his answer to that one question that both Reese & Jake are being led now in this direction. What could be so important as to use your children in promoting your cause. I don't think there's much lower than that.

Sweet dreams to anyone who's still awake out there. My eyelids are getting heavy now and I am turning lights out.

The Deacon pics were the Coffe pics, where they said bye and Jake walked off and Reese & D left in her car. He (D) looked upset right before they left. Methinks (HA now that it bothers everyone I'm gonna fucking do it all the time) D was upset because he wasn't gonna be seeing Uncle Jake for a while. Mama probably told him Uncle Jake can't come over to play with Deacon this time cos Uncle Jake has things to do and he's really busy but maybe next time, soon.

We haven't seen Jake since have we? But I bet other people have. And naked. heh

Great pick ups Ghris, especially about Jake's beard and the length. Sounds like they need to bring on a continuity person to help date and timestamp the photo sets.

I noticed that about the toothpick and thought it was Jake's way of making it look like they were holding hands.

Did you notice that the jogging pictures taken from an angle that made it look like they were right next to each other, but looking at the video you could tell they really weren't.

It's not just Jake and Reese doing this but the photoeditors and photographers. Photographers tell a story with the pictures they take, they know how to tell the story they want to tell by taking pictures they way they want them to look. They sell more pictures to the magazine if they give the magazine pictures of not only who they want but how they want them the portray the story they want to tell.

Camping KS - been there PG - hard cold ground - tent - and having to go to this funky tornado shelter in the ground to ride out the storm and the siren.

Hey Chris!! I had to get back on here when I saw your post, lol.

Oh, she's handing him a toothpick? For gosh sakes, why? Is she the Keeper of the Toothpick, lol? No wonder their hands looked funny.

Okay, so no handholding involved on this set of pics. Hmmm, well, okay. Gee, wouldn't you think since they've hardly been together these past few months, they'd be kind of touchy/feely even in public? I would.

Anyway, okay, so now I'm outta here. Just had to say hi back to you, Chris!

prairiegirl said...

Destiny & Special, you're not helping me here by getting back on, lol. I'm about to fall asleep at my dining room table.

A tent in Montana?? No way, Destiny! I can't do tents anymore, lol. I know, it was kinda cushy. Electric blanket, lolll! Microwave. A reclining lawn chair! But hey, there was some kind of primitive plumbing involved. And no Wi-Fi.

Special, where did you go camping at that you had to go to a tornado shelter, for gosh sakes? That would've been a nightmare.
Thank heavens for your reasonable, objective spin on things, too. I never think a whole lot about the photogs, but you're right. Surely, since it's usually always Flynet, that has to mean something. Why always the same photog. outfit?

It just seems that they keep taking one step further every time. But I will say this. Those pictures of Jake & Deacon were extremely uncomfortable and unnatural looking. I can't help but wonder if Reese was kneeling down trying to talk him into leaving alone with Jake while she went off somewhere else. He sure looked reluctant to do something while she was doing the talking.

lol, I certainly would think this if it wasn't for the fact that of all the pictures that we've had of Jake with the kids, the only 2 times we've seen the kids even remotely near Jake are the ones in Paris with Ava on his shoulders and now this sidewalk set with Jake & Deacon holding hands as if they've got a robin egg between their palms. The kids don't even look the slightest bit familiar with Uncle Jake, let alone affectionate or extremely fond of him. Haven't seen a single arm-wrap-around-the-neck hug or conversation taking place between them. Absolutely no sign to me of them being close to him as we've been led to believe endlessly in the rags.

Hey, Clarity! Good morning!
