Ban the Ban

What do The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and And Tango Makes Three* have in common? Books and Jake and Austin's bookshelves? Maybe. But that are also books that have been challenged to be removed for American public libraries this year.

This week is the American Library Associations 27th Annual Banned Book Week which celebrates the intellectual freedom afforded by the first amendment here in the U.S. And for an English major, and a book lover who supports the American Civil Liberties Union, you can see how they fit with today's post.

For OMG'ers from outside the U.S, access to books, movies, other media can be more or less restricted in certain areas or subjects but American public libraries provide access to all kinds of books and information. The criteria is that it must be of merit as a publication or product. So yes, American libraries can have Playboy, as well as the Torah, The Bible or The Koran. They can have Judy Blum books and well as Janette Oke. They provide access to information to the public, and all the public, not just some of the public. While some materials may be offensive to some people, it is the right to create, access, read, watch and use that is the real point here. Yes there are books that have been prohibited in the U.S. over the years since the Bill of Rights, the list is not that large and some that were banned in decades ago were removed from the list. Will there always be people challenging books, you bet. There's nothing wrong expressing your opinion, that's free speech, just like writing what you want write about.

When books are challenged to be banned because the conflict with personal viewpoints of a few it should make you stop and think. What if my favorite book is banned because someone thinks is offensive? What does that mean? Who's right is it to decide what I can and can't read?

So to celebrate these books that have been challenged - go to you library, bookstore, or shelf in your house and pick up one of them up and act. How? Read it. Radical huh.

* And Tango Makes Three is a 2005 children's book written by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson and illustrated by Henry Cole. The book is based on the true story of Roy and Silo, two male Chinstrap Penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo who for six years formed a couple. The pair were observed trying to hatch a rock that resembled an egg. When zookeepers realized that Roy and Silo were both male, it occurred to them to give them the second egg of a mixed-sex penguin couple, a couple which had previously been unable to successfully hatch two eggs at once. Roy and Silo hatched and raised the healthy young chick, a female named "Tango" by keepers, together as a family.

And Tango Makes Three is the most challenged book in U.S. public libraries in 2007

What a great post. Censorship is a subject that I am very passionate about. There is a great documentary that just came out called Obscene, about the owner of Grove Press and all the battles he had to get books published, and how important it was to have someone like this who was willing to fight those legal battles.

Because alot of you are more than just blogger names to me.

That is the whole point of this community.

PG, I am very interested in hearing about your funeral planning class. Hopefully you will share it with us. Didn't know that embalming poisoned the soil. Told the Mrs. that if she really wants to be buried, okay, but she is not getting embalmed!

Here's the link to the NY Times article about the Grove Press documentary.

Fake list of books Sarah Palin wanted banned just a standard list of books right-wing Christians want banned

Betcha Palin would agree anyway that these books should be banned.

How many have you read?

destiny said...

Interesting to see such a comprehensive list of books people have tried to ban. I haven't read many of the children's books or Stephen King, but certainly a lot of the classics like Faulkner and Salinger, and books like Our Bodies Our Selves. Some of the books were a suprise. My Friend Flicka?? Does anyone know why that one came in for attack?

Special K said...

My Friend Flicka. Mary O'Hara. Harper; Lippincott. Removed from fifth and sixth grade optional reading lists in Clay County, Fla. schools (1990) because the book uses the word "bitch" to refer to a female dog, as well as the word "damn."

Dear Ted:
I'm wondering if Toothy Tile is Jason Lee?

Dear Det. Closet:
Right look, wrong dude. But there's certainly a common thread here, doll-babe, at least 'tude wise.

It looks like Brothers has been bumped big time.

Brothers Bumped to Cannes .

A friend sent the story to my gf and told her to break the news to me gently. LOL.

Unbelievable about the books to be banned. I can't remember the last time I was in library. Between wikipedia, the internet and amazon.com, no need. But I forget that not everyone can afford to buy books without giving it a thought.

Jason Lee has Jake's hair color and the pic that pops up when you hover over his name, the scraggly beard and eyebrows, look Jake like. But I would never call him divine. Weird clue.

Lee maintains a relatively low profile, but cohorts Smith and Affleck insist that he's one of the funniest and most gentlemanly actors in the business.

The comparison to Lee scares me because he's a Scientologist.

Delayed releases seem to be par for the course for Jake lately. Can't say I am surprised. Something seemed very off with no trailer at this late stage. An excuse to see Jake do Cannes again is good. I planned to be in the south of France late april or early may (celebrating our 30th anniversary). It does seem though that even the Cannes mention sounds iffy.

destiny said...

They're probably hoping for Cannes, I don't think they would really know at this point if it will get shown, or at least not in competition.

Special K said...

You wonder if it just Prince of Persia commitments that Jake has keeping him from promoting Brothers.

But it does seem like a crazy year professionally for Jake, with movies been moved around and Nailed's production problems.

But it does sound encouraging if they want to take it Cannes, but where does that leave the U.S. release spring or late fall of 09?

destiny said...

If they really think it has Oscar potential, it probably won't get released until the Fall of '09.

And posted first on OMG.

The names and faces have been changed to protect the public.

Looking over the list of books, can say I read a majority of them, all the classic on it is basically the AP English reading list.

And if you haven't read And Tango Makes Three, try to check it out either at the library or at a bookstore. It is a very sweet story. It amazes me how people get so crazy over it is just so sad.

Cannes Film Festival: 13-24 May 2009

So Jessica and Jake's manager/pr went to the seminar on how to promote a fauxmance. Wonder who's next.

Thinking more about the delayed release. Seems to me that if the movie was great, it would not need Jake to promote it. Word of mouth would be enough, along with Tobey and Natalie. They are not exactly unknown. Reading body language, every time we've seen the director about recently, his posture does not speak "winner".

On another topic, Friday Night Lights returned tonight on Direct TV. It was good, and the guy that plays Riggins looked phenominal. Phenominal.

destiny said...

I'm jealous M that you don't have to wait until early next year to see FNL. And I have to admit I have a bit of a crush on the actor that plays Riggins too.

Seems like Jake has gotten caught not once but twice by all the changes going on in the movie biz right now. First Nailed with the financing, now Brothers with the glut of movies and the difficulties that smaller, serious movies face. Hope PoP doesn't have problems of its own down the road.

Great post, Spesh!

I'm thrilled about Cannes, but it does imply a bit of a long wait.

Bitch-Back! Funnier Than Fey & So Not Toothy

Dear Ted:
Toothy Tile is Mario Lopez because of his toothy grin, dimples, fab shape, perfect abs, consistent seemingly gal-chasing ways, and hanging out with BFF so often but that easily jealous husband of BFF is never jealous of Mario. That's the biggest giveaway. Right, Ted?
—Markie from Cincinnati

Dear Access Denied:
Toothy isn't C-list, darling.

Dear Ted:
Does a celebrity PR person feed gossip mags/websites with things about their clients, then place the blame on the media for getting things wrong? Also, do celebrities secretly enjoy the paparazzi even when they pretend otherwise?
—Donna

Dear Behind the Scenes:
Bingo on both. PR peeps are so conniving like that. And if you're anything like Britney, the paps are literally in bed with you one day and out the next. Much like Paris Hilton here in H'wood.

Re: justin timberlake/jessica biel-piggyback-ride

That would have been amusing if it wasn't so pathetic.

I guess they all get the same handbook : /

There is definitely a piggyback ride chapter on the Hollywood bearding handbook

Zac and Vanessa

I've been observing Zac and Vanessa for a while and there are a lots of similarities in their photo ops to Reeke. Some of the pics are identical. The handbook must be provided by Disney ;)
